Chiefs vs Waratahs: Super Rugby live scores

By The Roar / Editor

After last week’s stirring victory, the Waratahs will look for back-to-back wins when they face the Chiefs in Hamilton this afternoon. We’ll have live scores from the kick-off at 5.30pm AEDT.

It was by no means a vintage performance, but it was enough to silence the numerous and vocal critics that had begun to descend on the Waratahs camp over recent weeks as the losses began to rack up.

Just how much they can take from the win over the Sharks will be tested this afternoon when they face a red-hot Chiefs unit who had won three on the bounce before last week’s bye.

For the home side hooker Hika Elliot comes back into the starting lineup and Lelia Masaga returns to the bench, while Waratahs boss Michael Foley has the luxury of naming an unchanged 22 from last Saturday’s match.

After being accused of negative, conservative tactics over the first four matches, the Waratahs looked to have broken the shackles last week and it resulted in some enterprising, running rugby. They’ll need more of the same this evening, but they come up against a side who look to have one of the sternest defences in the competition.

But this game will either be won or lost up front. The Waratahs have been suspect at the scrum at times in 2012 and if it happens tonight, the critics will be back in no time.

Are the Tahs the real deal? Find out from 5.30pm AEDT as we cover all the action with live scores as they happen and if you’re watching or following along, post your opinions in the space below.

He is the current skipper which is why I am concerned that he won't be dropped the way he needs to be. He was playing like this years ago under Link after he first made the Wallabies and it was the spur he needed to improve his game. He is a mile away from what he is capable of at the moment.

Ben Robinson ... agree hes a passenger..scrumming apart hes seems absolutely useless around the field, never carries the ball up over the ad line, just leans on rucks and strolls from breakdown to breakdown or just stands back watching. The Franks bros will be licking their lips in unison if its him they scrum against in S15 or AB v Aust. But wasnt he Tahs skipper recently? Tony

Absolutely agree stillmatic, the moderation here is as inconsistent as the citing commission in Super Rugby. Home town officiating at its best.

The Tahs will take a weekend off now to lick their wounds. I heard a couple of weeks ago that Pakalani was nearly back and if he is by their next match against the Force in Perth then I'd be looking at a running out the squad below: 1. Tilse 2. Polota-Nau 3. Kepu 4. S. Timani 5. Douglas 6. L. Timani 7. Alcock 8. Palu 9. McKibbin 10. Barnes 11. Pakalani 12. Horne 13. Ashley-Cooper 14. Kingston 15. Foley 16. Ulugia 17. Ryan 18. Mumm 19. Dennis 20. Pretorius 21. Carter 22. Karauria-Henry The key casualties are Robinson who needs to go and get fit, Halangahu who was mainly there for goal kicking but is ably covered in that department by McKibbin, Barnes and in a pinch Foley. Key focus for the forwards is to take a leaf out of the Highlanders book and lift their hitting at the breakdown, number two is to fix their mauling both on attack and defence. In attack they are protecting the ball well but too high and ineffective in their drive, in defence they are not working as unit and getting their binds together and woking with a plan. For the backs they have finally cut down their reliance on kicking and need to work on their fluidity and putting the ball out in front of the man, need to cut down on the cut passes and start having some changing of their running lines to get players more readily into space.

ohtani's jacket, can you send a few more over? NZ has opened the factory doors this year and a bunch of quality 10's came out. I am sure the Reds would pre order 2 right off the bat.

Could not agree more. It was definately a case of the Tahs forward dominance v the Chiefs backs dominating. This all changed in the second half when the Tahs took off Palu, Kepu, Douglas & TPN (easily the Tahs best forwards of the game). Then it was a case of the Chiefs running the show and the Tahs trying not to lose by too much. All credit to the Chiefs, they weathered the storm in the first half, could have easily been down by 16+ if the Tahs had converted there oppertunities better. Will resever my judgement on the Chiefs until they travel but all indications are they could be the real deal.

Pek Cowan and Nathan Charles have been excellent, the Force scrum has been rock solid, a revelation this year

I think allot of it has to do with money also. Prices are rising and cost of living is going through the roof, but wages in New Zealand are still the same. Tickets may not be expensive, but when you take the family out they all want a hotdog and some chips and a drink and that is when taking the kids to the rugby can get expensive. That is why huge amounts of us now live here in Aussie haha.

I agree Robinson did have Tameifuna in trouble, but as you say he is just a kid and he wont peak for another 3 or 4 years that is scary. For me the Chiefs best front row did not start that match. Shwalger adds so much to the Chiefs scrum from Hooker. As a Chiefs fan i'm very happy with the way we are traveling. The coaches are doing a good job of rotating players while keeping on the winning side of the ledger. Cane and Shwalger are both starters in the top side IMO. I just want to say one more thing about the Chiefs. TAUMALOLO !! love the little shimmy before he dotted down, and that break he made wow, he looked like a back. For me the Tahs are not playing to their strengths enough. Why go wide when your backline is going backwards?. They did not make good use of a dominant scrum and lineout in the first half. They had the Chiefs under all sorts of pressure early with the forwards rumbling over the advantage line, but they lost all momentum as soon as Barnes got ball in hand. There are no decoy runners and nobody is hitting the ball at speed. SBW and Kahui were basically picking the Tahs backs up and walking them backwards. People always moan the Tahs are a boring team to watch, but for me there is nothing boring about using a dominant and big pack to muscle the ball up the middle all day long. Thats what the Tahs need to be doing otherwise why the hell are they picking such a big pack who struggle to get around the paddock in an up tempo game.

Robinson actually touched up Tameifuna tonight. No disrespect to the young guy he is 18 and will only get better. Taumalolo and Kepu was a much more even battle. I definitely think Palmer is having a good season but he doesn't put Robinson under pressure as they play opposite sides of the scrum. Robinson doesn't look fit for mine, he has more of a gut than usual and although he is scrummaging well his workrate around the park is terrible. That chip kick across field to Robinson was a massive case in point. Not since Matt Dunning have we had a prop at NSW so out of position as to find himself out on the wing like that. Even worse for mine is that after he caught that ball we had a couple of slow rucks not far from that point and he made it to none of them. An article a couple of weeks ago mentioned that he left training early due to knee issues and I wonder if he isn't still struggling with the injury from last year. I'd certainly be giving Tilse a run in the next match and telling Robinson to get his fitness up because his work outside of scrums is insufficient. Overall Palmer has been the best performed Aussie tighthead so far this season, he missed the game tonight and Alexander struggled at tighthead in his absence. Longbottom and Holmes have probably been our best looseheads and the usual pair of Moore and Polota-Nau have been our best hookers. We need Robinson to start firing and if that means dropping him now and hoping he can come back then that is what needs to happen. I have very little faith that Foley would drop the guy he just made captain though,

The decision to take Palu off was outrageous. He was the best forward on the park. Mumm, Douglas or Dennis yes but not Palu off. And seriously why take anyone off 5mins after half time? Just stupid. They have at least 15min in them after a break. Foley is showing they are not well coached or drilled IMO. They dont use the space on the field well, too many backs hang on to the ball, too many double cut out passes that just let the defence drift. I could go on and on. The pack is very good overall and plenty of depth. The backs are just ordinary as a group...

Spot on Ash. Backs are ordinary particularly inside backs. Barnes passing was dreadful, high and behind the man all night. He is not capable of being a dominant 10. He is a good average footballer nothing more. Tries his butt off but will not win a comp at 10. Kingston looks the most likely of the lot. Horned doesn't pass, Carter was intimidated and meek.

jeznez good points. But what worries me is the depth of Australian rugby. Last 2 matches tahs and rebels, have shown when the kiwis turn up the energy and intensity and physicality based rugby, the aussies seem to surrender. Ben robinson the prop worries me too. He got a working over by chiefs front row the tongan prop and that big young chiefs new bloke. Last week vs the sharks he did too. I don't think the Franks brothers or Tony Woodcock, are that worried by Ben Robinson. He scrums okay but seems very slow and offers little around the park. start the Timani brothers next week if i was the tahs that is i must need that power. Only tah players that impressed me tonight were Palu who was the best player on the field until he went off.. Gee he was a big loss last year in the wallaby squad what a player Palu is when fired up. And Timani borthers and TPN were physical and tried hard as did dave dennis and douglas went okay, but the rest of the forwards and back didn't do much except kingston did okay too. But the rest dean mumm, AAC, ben robinson , there careers are in no man's land in my opinion i don't know where there futures are beyond this season. Not enough punch and energy. ANd men like lima messam and adam thompson are on the All black fringes talk about depth. what do you think of Ben Robinson right now jeznez, im tempted to give Dan Palmer a run and i really want to see James Slipper develop , if he gets a bit tougher james slipper has all the physical talent to be a world class jeznez. I am losing faith though in Ben Alexander, Kepu and Ben Robinson Jenzez.

johnno, much like wingers score tries because they are marked by other wingers. League players look tough cause they play other league players. The size differentials are significant, union can't just pick the toughest bloke they need to look at size too. That said why Mumm is still playing 80 when you could get S.Timani and Douglas on the park together is beyond me. Carter was great last week, agree he did very little tonight. The backs passed too much ball behind the man all night, forwards need to be fitter to play out 80. The pigs also need to get their height lower in the mauls, they set some good mauls and gained ascendancy there without making the Chiefs pay. All that said I am happier with the style of the Tahs, they didn't kick wastefully throughout the night and tried to hold the ball and be constructive, a bit more of the same and the passes will be in the right place and they will look good. A week off next week, time to keep working on that running game.
