Warne calls for massive changes in Australian cricket

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

This season of Australian cricket 2012/13 has been interesting. In November, the South Africans were pushed right to the end by the Australians in Brisbane, Adelaide and Day 1 of Perth before winning the series 1-0.

Then came the Sri Lankans who were comprehensively outplayed by an inexperienced Australian side 3-0. The ODI series sparked controversy during the fourth match at the SCG when play was called off due to an “unfit” outfield.

The series ended 2-2 and Sri Lankan took out the T20 matches 2-0.

But there has been more controversy off the field caused by the rotation, player management policy and an all-time great in Shane Warne. It started in the BBL when Warne left the Stars for a Christmas/New Year holiday with his wife in the U.K.

Then there was more, when he and Marlon Samuels clashed in an ugly confrontation at the MCG in the Melbourne Derby. Then, via Twitter, he slams the Australian selectors for not doing the best for Australian Cricket.

And if you think that’s where it would all end, think again.

Yesterday Warne made a huge plan and statement. He called for the whole selection panel to be dumped, including coach Mickey Arthur. The champion leg-spinner says Arthur, Andy Bichel and chairman of selectors John Inverarity should be replaced by Warne’s ex-teammates Damien Martyn, Mark Waugh and Glenn McGrath.

However he still had captain Michael Clarke as part of the selection panel. He also wanted Pat Howard to be replaced by former Australian captain Mark Taylor, just a couple days after calling Howard a muppet.

Stephen Fleming, former New Zealand captain and great, was also called upon by Warne to replace Arthur as the coach.

His coaching staff would also include Darren Lehmann as the assistant, Michael Hussey and Michael Bevan as batting coaches with Merv Hughes and Bruce Reid as bowling coaches. Mike Young would still be the fielding coach.

Warne also wants his mate and former Test skipper Ian Chappell as a consultant to the team.

Warne stated as well that he wanted the best Australian XI competing in all forms of the game which would include Michael Clarke, David Warner, Matthew Wade, Peter Siddle, Nathan Lyon, Shane Watson.

He says there is no need for resting or rotating/protecting players from injuries every match.

“You get to know the person, too much chopping and changing leads to insecurity, players then start to look out for themselves and over their shoulder, this breeds selfishness,” Warne said.

“It’s also why rotation and resting players will never work”. Warne will consult Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland about his ideas.

In every way, Warne is almost dead on the money. However it would be unlikely this would all happen very quickly before the next Australian summer unless Australia lose the series in India and the Ashes badly.

In my opinion, I reckon Warne’s ideas should be given a crack, but I’d also liked to see Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath included in the bowling coaching department.

What do you think Roarers? Is Warne out of his mind or is he dead right?

Looks Warne is expressing a frustration many are feeling with the present structure and some of his points have merit and needed to be said. That's not saying I agree with Warne or all of his suggestions. Its just that I'm not convinced Oz cricket is in the best hands at present. I know you think a lot of Mickey Johnno but I think he picks favourites, and players generally with less talent to take positions over the more worthy players. Example is the selections of Cowan, Quiney, Christian, Doherty, Forrest, Doolan Shaun Marsh.etc. Meanwhile players with better averages such as Khawaja, Burns, O'Keefe, Rogers have sat on the sideline. I can cope with Henriques, Maxwell, and Steve Smith because they are all stiil young and developing and encouraging them seems logical. Giving Bailey and David Hussey chances in short forms of the game was also justified, though not that successful. But for me Mickey as I said picks favourites and some of them seem like they can do no wrong and just keep getting selected despite poor showings. For mine I would have Rod Marsh back in the administration..he was very succesful before. Craig McDermott did good things for the fast bowlers. Lehman seems a good local coach who should be given a chance. But like with Warne, that's just my opinion

A lot of different issues here such as player rotation, management personnel, management structures. When you examine the detail it is either not there or it is justified by saying ;simple common sense'. Warne himself seemed to have an amazing balance when playing; he rarely seemed to overthink things and was therefore able to enjoy cricket and play with freedom whilst simultaneoulsy being really insightful and intuitive. The problem is, for every issue that there is a 'simple solution' ('take more catches, bowl yorkers at a shoe') there are plenty that require a bit more thought. I'll take 2 examples. First one is tubby for 'boss man' I quite like Tubby, thinks he talks a lot of sense and obviously he was a really good captain. But do we know if that would actually work? Obviously having been a captain long term does give you some practice at what is required and a good insight into the issues but still, he fairly struggled with Channel 9's new 'table' this season, so maybe he has issues with technology!? More serioulsy, does he even want the job? Has he ever been in any sort of a 'CEO' or 'Commisioner' role? Not as far as I am aware, but no worries Shane says - he'll be right! He might well be, just as Glenn McGrath might be an amazing bowling coach - but this is what happpened with England Rugby Union and Martin Johnson - basically appointed on the basis of being a succesful captain and popular with the media. He just wasn't a great coach - or he maybe could be but hadn't had the time to develop his techniques. Some ex-players make great coaches or administrators, some don't. The way people get at least some insight into whether they would be is by having an application process and holding interviews, but no doubt Warney would say that this is overthinking it! The second issue is his anti rotation thing starts with 'A simple criteria is pick your best team and stick with it in all forms'. I understand the frustration (clearly not that great an idea in retrospect to go into the Perth test vs SA with a whole new seam attack!) but what is he saying, that exactly the same team should play the T20s, ODIs and the test? Really? REALLY? A part of me would love to see this just top see what happened. And to see how Warney (or actually 'Tubby' (for Warneys role in this Brave New World is unclear)) would justify it all!

Warnie is one of the most astute cricket minds in the game. As long as he stays out of personalities. Unfortunately here, Warnie has played the "mates" card & replaced people he doesn't like with people he does like. It so happens, there are people in both camps I respect hugely & some in both camps who's judgement I query. Damien Martyn might have been a great batsman, but he's a divisive character, like David Nucifora in rugby. I wouldn't have him in a 'people dealing position' because of this. Mark Waugh is an astute commentator, but that doesn't mean he would make an excellent selector. I'm concerned Waugh might gamble with each selection. Hmmmm, Starc or Johnson for last fast bowling position? Let's play two-up, heads for Starc, tails for Johnson, come in spinner, it's heads, Starc is in, Johnson is out, etc. Let's look at the rotation policy. You can argue it's required on an occasional on-going basis. But some common sense needs to be applied & players should be rested on a needs basis, & not merely because it's felt someone should step down each time.

I believe you have to look beyond his tactical ability on the field, which was clearly of a high enough standard to warrant the captaincy. But on just about every other criteria he falls well short. Test captain has to have the maturity and self discipline to be a role model, which Warne was obviously not. He also needs to show respect for officials and opponents. CA made the right call in giving it to Waugh over Warne.

I agree with most of it however Warne retired from ODI to concentrate on Tests!!! Isn't that a form of rotation? He stopped playing certain matches so he was fit for others? -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download it now [http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/the-roar/id327174726?mt=8].

You probably got too familiar with those glory days during the 90s/00s when we had Warne, McGrath and six batsman averaging over 50. Either that or you have never experienced a time when Australia were not a top 2 test team. Those days are over. Set yourself lower standards and enjoy the ride. It’s allot more fun when winning is an achievement rather than expectations. Being the underdogs can be a real blast. Every team has its strengths and weaknesses (you’ve done a good job pointing out the weaknesses) This summer we have had slightly more positives than negatives which makes it a good summer in my mind.

Are any of these people that Shane has put forward actually interested in performing these roles? I notice he hasn't put himself forward as spin coach. Thank god we never made him captain. He's becoming an Anthony Mundine level joke. Move to England and stay there -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download it now [http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/the-roar/id327174726?mt=8].

The best thing Shane Warne can do for himself is to stop being a twit and delete his Twitter account.....his turning into an Anthony Mundine where people don't even care enough to listen anymore.

Judging by the way in which he captained in the last game for the Stars I'm not convinced he would have been a good captain at all. And his on-field petulance and off-field behaviour confirms that CA got it absolutely right in not giving him the captaincy. BBL still-born? While attendances were certainly down on the first year, they were still pretty healthy (several sell-outs and equal to the A-League) and the TV ratings were excellent. So good that FTA networks are interested in taking over the broadcasting rights from Fox Sports. Near dead ODI format? Go and talk to the ICC about that - nothing to do with CA. Teams that people don't want to watch? While there's been a bit of screaming and yelling going on on forums, I believe that TV ratings have held up pretty well - indicating that for most people, it's a non-issue.

Fonzie I think we've got higher standards. A home test series loss to SA, drawing the ODI series with SL - how can that be considered successful? We only wopn one of the 4 series we played in, at home? It's a pretty awful summer, with a lot of shortcomings clear and not that many positives. Wade can't keep Lyon can't run through a tail Lyon can't take 5th day wickets on a turning deck Our opening partnership partnership is inconsistent (being kind) We're often 3 for 50 Our fast bowlers are breaking down The selectors are picking all rounders not up to the level I could go on...

I'm sure that this has nothing to do with any resentment he holds towards CA because of his fines in the BBL or their insistence that he actually play some cricket before any potential Ashes comeback.... While I agree that CA isn't going brilliantly at the moment, this isn't even close to a plan. It's just a list of names, almost all of which are his mates. There is nothing at all about what CA could actually do to improve the sport. It seems more like another desperate cry for attention from a man struggling to keep himself somewhat relevant

The ICC have to take some of the blame., they are setting the rules for ODI cricket. There is a smite on ODI cricket apparently coming up. And one thing is looking at building points in ODI format for world cup qualification, and including more nations in ODI. who knows if that will work as 8 team will defiantly make it. Would be exciting for the minnows to watch.

Anyone who understands cricket knew Warne would have made an excellent Australian captain, probably the best since Ian Chappell. He has such an intimate knowledge of the sport. We should be taking what he says on board. I mean the Sutherland camp has delivered us the stillborn BBL, plummetting attendances, a near dead ODI format and teams that people DO NOT WANT TO WATCH. Let's just stick with Sutherland and watch cricket die off.

It was a good series win , but my point is that series is not enough to warrant the term "successful summer " being used . We lost the other test series , lost the T20s , were probably lucky not to lose the first ODI series .

What should we a consider a hat-hangable result against Sri Lanka in the 3 Test series? 5-0? 6-0?

He term a successful summer could be debated . We blew a great opportunity to beat south Africa . 3-0 against an under strength Sri Lanka , while a good win , is nothing to hang hats on . Our performances in the ODIs and T20s have been erratic. The next 12 months really are a watershed period, starting with what will be a tough ODI series against an improving west indies .
