Melbourne Cup 2013: Who won, came last

By The Roar / Editor

The 2013 Melbourne Cup has been won by Fiorente, with Red Cadeaux in second, and Mount Athos in third, Simenon in fourth.

Gai Waterhouse has finally won her first Melbourne Cup. Waterhouse had previously finished second three times in the Melbourne Cup. This is undoubtedly her greatest moment in racing.

Last: Verema – she sadly appeared to break down at the 2000m.

Read The Roar’s thoughts on who came last here.

Damien Oliver had Fiorente positioned in midfield throughout the race. When the field swung for home Fiorente, who was second in last year’s Melbourne Cup, came to the outside to chase down Red Cadeaux who was brave in defeat.

This is Oliver’s third Melbourne Cup victory after success on Doriemus in 1995 and Media Puzzle in 2002.

Fiorente took the lead inside the final 200m of the Melbourne Cup and was always going to win once he established a lead.

The Cup favourite Fiorente is trained by Waterhouse at Randwick in Sydney and was imported from England to Australia to run in the 2012 Melbourne Cup.

Since racing in Australia, Fiorente has consistently turned in outstanding performances. This was his seventh run in Australia and his second victory, and the 2013 Melbourne Cup is his maiden Group 1 win.

Fiorente is a six-year-old stallion from the German-bred sire Monsun. His mother is the Irish mare Desert Bloom, who herself is a daughter of the Irish stallion Pilsudski. As such, Fiorente is Irish bred.

He earned his Cup favouritism after an outstanding trial in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley when third. Before that, he was a flashing fourth in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

Speaking after the race Waterhouse described it as “a dream come true”.

Fiorente paid a win dividend of $7.00 on the Victorian TAB.

People keep asking because office sweeps always offer money for last place as well as first/second/third. Unbunch your panties and have a lie down.

Are you people serious ? Why keep asking who finished last ? Last is last no matter how you look at it is it not ? If a horse doesn't finish, it can't run last can it !!!! Geeze, you once a year / 50c each way on favourites are a pain in the ars*

It was on a horse that had no chance of losing and he rode to the best of his ability. Sure he shouldnt have done it, but it wasnt like he bet on another horse while riding the favorite etc.

Horrible about Verema. Broken leg at 200m, and put down before the winner was crowned. Makes you realise the feats that these horses must go to. This is why I don't believe in the Melbourne Cup day being a public holiday theoughout Australia (except Melbourne). Why celebrate the exploitation of animals for the base of entertainment and gambling. Feelings with the trainers and all in company with Verema. Heard they were crying their eyes out!! Always sad to lose any life.

No winners again for me, but bloody proud for our greatest female trainer. Onya Gai, don't have any negative comments for Oliver, you can only adhere to whatever suspensions you get. Pretty obvious that his was not an isolated case.

Great Cup. It was anyone's at the 400m. Well done Gai - collected on the winner and had Mt Athos for a place. Simenon - good call by Justin. Can stay.

It is so refreshing to see that who wins a couple of dollars is more important than the life of a horse. Hope someone cares if any of you people suddenly do not finish something.
