The Siddle riddle

By rajendra prasad / Roar Rookie

If you are a follower of Australia or England you will be familiar with a guy named Peter Siddle – oft described as the ‘heart and soul’ of Aussie cricket.

He can run in all day and his intensity remains same from the first to the last ball.

He has been the part of three Ashes defeats, but one thing everyone would remember is his performance in the first Ashes Test match of the previous two series, where he managed to get five wicket hauls in both matches.

But if you look at his performance in the remainder of the series, he was pretty ordinary.

If he keeps that up, he could potentially cost Australia the Ashes.

It would be better to have a look at his performance after Adelaide. If it follows the same old story, it will be better to replace him with either Ben Hilfenhaus or Ben Cutting.

Both of them offer something different.

Hilfenhaus can swing the ball at genuine pace and Australia lack a genuine swing bowler.

Ryan Harris is more of a seam bowler and Johnson swinging the ball? Well, miracles do happen.

So Hilfenhaus would add an extra edge to the bowling arsenal.

Cutting is similar to Harris, but gets extra lift and he can be a genuine contributor with the willow.

But if Siddle can address this issue he might just be Australia’s most important bowler.

Let’s hope his reunion with Aussie bowling coach Craig McDermott will solve the riddle.

Day-night tests are attractive when the match would otherwise be played on a hot 30C+ day which is most of the time on the subcontinent and peak summer in Australia. Now that we're in autumn this might not resonate among the fans right now. I noticed most spectators prefer winter sports held in the afternoon since that's the warmest time. Cricket isn't a winter sport though.

Mate, it is probably going a bit far to start sledging players for how you perceive them to be off the cricket field. Good luck to Stu Clark on completing his undergrad but it is not really relevant to how we are going to go in this ashes series. The Johnson thing has been done to death - but it is only overhyped in the media and discussion forums - he is being picked so we'll see how he goes - most likely, it will be somewhere in the middle of the predictions - he won't skittle them and he won't be abject - he'll probably consistently pick up a few wickets but will go for a few extra runs (unless he strikes very favourable bowling conditions). As for Watson, he might appear to be a tosser but if you haven't met him that is a very superficial judgement - his batting performances against England in the past 3 Ashes series have been very solid (averaging 45 against Anderson & co.) so it is a bit unfair to sledge his performances against England compared to the rest of the top order. And let's face it - they all seem a bit overly sensitive these days - but I don't recall Katich grabbing Watto by the neck to sort him out in the dressing room. Note that the "cancer" allegations came from Clarke and Arthur - who as Captain and Coach were primarily responsible for the toxic culture we saw in India simply because they lack people management skills (Clarke is too busy promoting his "brand" and Arthur too insecure - at least according to Haddin). Even if he does nothing else right, at least Boof seems to have sorted out the dressing room.

Siddle is overrated bowler, Despite being premium bowlers, he has failed to delivered and needs to be replace either by Copeland, Cutting of Sayers.

I don't hate Johnson. He's a flawed individual paid an obscene ammount of money thats life. I'm a flawed well paid individual but I'm pushing 50 and worked to get here. Johnson won't have a pot to pee in at 49. Did you know Stu Clark completed a commerce degree whilst playing for us and slaying Englishman and now he just finished a Law Degree. I like that. To be fair if I'm in the members and were inadvertantly introd to Australian current players, the only guy I feel contempt for is Watson. Such a tosser. Wouldn't shake his hand in a fit.

It's Tymal Mills, not Kyle Mills. The latter is a Kiwi

Australia's bowling attack feels too same old same old with the exception of Faulkner. For the GABBA test, we should just hope that the pitch doesn't flatten out from the 2nd innings onwards otherwise feelings of déjà vu will come haunting back.

Sorry the whole pace gets wicket thing is flawed Stu Clark bowled 120s to 130s. Leading wicket taker is the 5-0 triumph 2006/7 (beating Warne, McGrath and Lee) As did McGrath 130s, Alderman less. Kyle Mills bowls over 145 as is a net bowler with the Englsih side.

How can you dismiss cutting like that. He's had one of the best averages and strike rates in the shield for a few seasons running, he bowled well with no support in the A game.

Siddle is good, all you Aussie carnivores are getting into him because you don't like his vegan diet.

If siddle can get the movement he got against India ,he could make an impact. and sorry for not mentioning sayers.

Copeland and Sayers although good accurate bowlers are not fast enough to challenge batsmen consistently. They both bowl mid 120's to low 130's. If they want to make Australia they need to do a Philander and just continually hit the same spot all day long with movement. Sayers could be a good bowler down the track but im pretty sure the selectors will favour bowlers like Pattinson, Cummins, Starc and Cutting because they have that extra pace.

If Johnson does a charecteristic dung flinging meltdown Siddle is in for some long spells and short breaks.

The Australian Bowling attack has nothing wrong with it, its the batting that needs some sorting, Peter Siddle is a proven perfomer, not the most extravagant but he does his job,,not every guy in an attack needs to be a miracle worker..in a couple of series against SA he did a splendid job and built pressure but this was when the batters put up a decent score for the bowlers to work with..
