Predicting the 2015 Ashes sides

By Ronan O'Connell / Expert

No Brad Haddin, Shane Watson, Ryan Harris, Chris Rogers, Graeme Swann, Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott, Matt Prior or James Anderson.

Australia and England could both field very different line-ups for the 2015 Ashes, with a host of veterans likely to retire.

Those Aussie big names may well be absent, replaced by the likes of Jordan Silk, Chris Lynn, Joe Burns, Nic Maddinson, Pat Cummins, Alister McDermott or Sam Whiteman.

The similarly well-known English players listed above could also be gone and in their place greenhorns like James Taylor, Moeen Ali, Tymal Mills, Chris Jordan or Simon Kerrigan.

England’s third successive capitulation at the WACA this week has triggered an avalanche of media speculation about the futures of their elder statesmen.

Losing the Ashes in straight sets tends to have such an effect.

The potential departures of Swann, Pietersen, Trott, Prior or Anderson would truly represent a changing of the guard for England, with that group all having competed in the last four Ashes series.

Swann turns 36 in the year of the next Ashes, while Pietersen turns 35, Trott 34 and Prior and Anderson 33.

Members of the British press have suggested several of that group could well play no part in the 2015 series.

There does, however, remain a very slim chance that all of them will still be around to try to regain the Ashes.

Despite the doom and gloom in the English media, Prior and Anderson, in particular, are durable athletes whose significant talent should allow them to rebound from their abysmal returns in the current Ashes.

Pietersen’s hunger may well be tested though.

At times this series the bombastic strokemaker has looked disinterested.

As one of the most sought-after T20 players in the world, it will be interesting to see how long he continues to front up for Test cricket.

He is well aware he can earn just as much money while expending a fraction of the energy as a T20 mercenary, travelling the globe playing in national leagues.

Swann has had ongoing problems with his elbow and he too may not last another 18 months in Test cricket.

Trott, meanwhile, faces an arduous journey back to international competition after leaving this current tour with a stress-related illness.

As far as the Aussies are concerned, Haddin and Rogers will very likely have retired by the next Ashes considering they both turn 38 that year.

Harris, too, will probably have succumbed to the passage of time given his fragile body.

Shane Watson has a similarly troublesome chassis and there are no guarantees he will still be playing Test cricket at age 34.

There is every chance then that as many as seven or eight well-known Ashes combatants may be missing from the team sheets in 2015.

Granted, it is impossible to accurately predict Test line-ups 18 months in advance.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a fascinating exercise.

1) WARNER 2) KHAWAJA ( he has not had the best start in test, but when he was in the test team the Aussies were unsettled themselves. Has a solid ave of 39 and a great list A average of 43. I think he would be suited to being able to come in without worrying about the game situation. Proved that he can open well with Warner as shown in the T20. In T20 has shown that he has improved with his playing a spin as well. 3) Hughes ( could take the game away with Warner or could work well along with Khawaja. And by the time he is getting on Silk and maddinson will be in there prime. 4) Clarke 5) Smith 6) Faulkner ( I think his batting is better than a lot of people give him credit for. Better ave than Marsh in List A and shield. I also think it important to have a 4th seamer. And he is a fighter!!) 7) Paine ( batting is the argument against him but still has solid average in List A where he does go on and make 100s.) 8) Johnson/Starc 9) Pattinson 10) Cummins/Bird 11) Lyon/Ahmed... Still don't think lyon is settled and Ahmed can bowl!!!) 12th Lynn 13th Bird

By 2016-17 I reckon Lyon will be a very good spinner. He will be 30 then and just coming into his prime.

Going out on a very thin limb which is being sawn off behind me but I reckon Khawaja will make it back.

2015 Ashses Series I don't think you will see too much of a turnover. Out of the Australian Team, I only have question marks against Rogers, Watson & Haddin. Rogers probably the only one I have large questions marks again and that's more performance based. I'm taking an extra time frame on this...I'm going 2017/2018Ashes seies. Australia David Warner Jordan Silk Phil Hughes Usman Khawja Steve Smith (c) Chris Lynn/ Joe Burns Sam Whiteman (wk) James Faulkner Mitchell Starc James Pattinson Nathan Lyon Reserves on Tour Nic Maddison Chris Lynn / Joe Burns Phil Neville Alister McDermott Chad Sayers Aston Agar

Good times for Aussie cricket might just be coming back.. Consider this - 1. Bowling We already have a stackful of pace bowlers apart from the 3 musketeers of this Ashes series - Patto , Starc , Cummins , Bird , Hazlewood , NCN , Sayers. Lyon seems to have cemented his long term place now, though there are others that might break through like Agar, Zampa and Boyce 2. Keeping Now that Haddin seems to have settled his spot for the short to medium term, the battle of the keepers can go on in the Shield so that we have more clarity than what we have now regarding the next test keeper 3. Batting Think there is heaps of talent here , just look at the list - Doolan, Burns, Maddinson, Lynn , Head, Silk, Handscomb,Kurtis Patterson, Carters, Mitch Marsh, Whiteman, Marcus Harris What this series win has done is that it has brought a sense of stability to the side and has bought us a couple of years where the above names can gain in experience and stature playing in the shield. If we would have lost they would have been rushed in the side which would be of no good to them. Interesting who the reserve 7th batsman is going to be on the tour to SAF

Agreed. Swann obviously not at his best this series, but he has been sensational throughout his career. Huge loss.

Head is a great prospect and as a specialist first drop hopefully he can fill that troublesome spot in a few years.

Well Swann has just retired so Panesar and Kerrigan are going to have to step up now. Huge loss for England. Swann has been as important as any player in that side the past 4 years.

Ok yep against Sri Lanka, I was thinking, "India, when the heck did they play down at Bellerive?"

The problem nick is that Carters needs to actually be keeping for his State side to get the gloves for Australia! You'd also need to see him maintain that kind of batting form when he has the dual responsibility of keeping.

I'd be looking into the other keeper in NSW Ryan Carters. He has had an amazing start to the year with the bat and his keeping is very handy.

It wasn't so long ago that some critics were saying that Johnson’s one day form wouldn't last and that while he was good with the white ball he'd be too risky with the red one.
