AFL vs NRL: Battle of the Gold Coast

By turbodewd / Roar Guru

Gentlemen, it is with a heavy heart that I report we are losing this front. A sustained and well-planned rearguard action is required within six months, or I fear we cannot recover.

Latest dispatches indicate over 18,000 witnessed the AFL’s Gold Coast Suns on Saturday night, while last Monday night just 6500 supported the Titans.

On Sunday, in ideal weather, playing the hugely popular St George Illawarra Dragons, an equally miserable crowd attended. The final crowd figure came in at just over 12,000, a grim figure.

In addition, I regret to advise that this season is trending to be the worst ever. The numbers are damning. In their first two seasons our Titans averaged over 21,000 at home. Alas, every year since 2008 we have seen a steady decline down to 13,800.

This is a double disaster considering the population of the Gold Coast is growing every year by around two per cent.

In order to take up this battle, a market research firm must be employed to speak to the people of the Gold Coast and find out why the Titans are on the nose. In the meantime I recently supplied crayons to a class of 25 Gold Coast primary schoolers and asked them to draw the Suns and Titans jersey. Alas, not one child managed to draw anything remotely resembling the Titans’ jersey, while most kids did a decent job of drawing the Suns simple but effective design.

Many kids asked which Titans jersey to draw, there have been ‘too many’ they complained. One child wondered why so many of the players have the same surname of iSelect. Another thought they were the Gold Coast Jetstars. Whoever is in charge of the Titans uniform will be court-martialed!

The class teacher took me aside, almost in tears (a true league lady) and showed me a box full of free Titans tickets. Another court-martial is in order. I simply will not have our fans trained to wait for free tickets and tarnish the brand. We are worth paying to see, I’m sure of it. This free ticket fiasco is clearly a turn-off for the fans. This is their worst season ever!

We still hold the Senter of ExSearlence on the Gold Coast, it is a strong base. We can rebuild. Who will fight with me? Now let us burn these free tickets!

So why aren't the thousands of free passes distributed, being utilised? Maybe it might have something to do with the product?

Sports FanGC I have been visiting the GC regularly for 4 decades.I had relatives living at Currumbin for twenty years there.I attended Tweed Heads Seagulls matches before they entered the major comp.Attended NRL games at Robina. Please do not lecture me on my GC experiences with rugby league. I also take an interest in grassroots rl there, and have done so for many years. Why? Because we get the usual retinue of AFL posters on rl threads ,telling rl fans what rl fans should know about rl. As a consequence the Lions were mentioned as an analogy with the tiatns to a degree.Continuing falling crowds, and continuing poor performances on the field>yet they won a flag on a couplke of occasions ,whereas the Tiatns have not.

It has all to do with performances over the years /coach and Cof E building.Maybe one can ask Canberra why their crowds continually drop:Performance I pose over a decent period of time.. As it has zero to do with the subject matter Orville & Wright???,I suppose a little off tangent comments underpins your argument. Therefore as you no doubt have intimate knowledge of SASCOC,Vichy ,so I guess you were/are in full support of their efforts. They certainly had support from the usual suspects in the past. But of course the usual AFL trolling experts here ,know all about the attitude of rugby league fans, more so than the actual fans.

Oh and what point have I not answered? You trolls just avoid TV ratings etc and have to bring in national figures on foxsports to cover up the woeful ratings of AFL in the northern markets.

I'm not a smarmy troll who baits. An old saying applies to your like- you can guard against a thief but not a liar. You're trolling on rugby league threads aren't welcome and you don't deserve any sort of respect for such. Go AWAY.

Hey Crosscoder did you see this recent Russian junior rugby league video? Our Gold Coast juniors have lots to aspire to :) No wonder some insular sports fans of other codes like to jump at anything :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-LmDMtp9TQ

AR, Why should I post the Foxsports ratings again when you already have? it's easy to provide figures on a given day when the AFL happen to have the biggest ratings FOR THAT DAY. Again, these are national figures, do you have the breakdown for NSW/QLD in those figures? Going by FTA figures, I provide, once again I guess those figures for AFL pay tv would be pretty low in the northern markets.

Bludger, those figures AR gave are national. So no, AFL is no way near the top programming in NSW/QLD.

exactly I travelled to a titans game from sydney and a family ticket is I adult and I child how ludicrous is that if they sold $40 family tickets family of 4 they would be playing in front of 20,000 plus crowds. the nrl's attitude is we are cheapening the product if no-one turns up you are damaging the product.

Having lived on the Gold Coast for the past two years I can only give an opinion of what I see and hear on the ground from my perspective. In relation to the Titans they seriously need a marketing overhaul and identify the players that people will actually want to turn up and watch play. Market your club around these couple of players and slowly begin introducing the entire squad so people know who they are watching. Also you cannot underestimate the effect of the Centre of Excellence debacle and the number of tradespeople (and families) that affected. They want nothing to do with the club and word of mouth is as strong a form of advertising as you can get in any industry. Injuries, SOO, form and the fixture have unfortunately not helped the Titans this year and on top of this the Titans do not seem to be able to attract fans of the visiting club to come up to the Gold Coast (except for the NZ Warriors game). They need to be selling the Gold Coast and have tickets for the game included in any fly/stay/drive package but again this will require some assistance from the NRL who seem fixated on giving the Titans Monday night games. Lastly there would be some concern on the SOME of the crowd numbers this season, particularly when they have been running a promotion for a couple of months now where a child gets in free in the Eastern Stand with a paying adult. The other aspect is that the Titans cannot seem to attract any top talent to the Gold Coast only seemingly getting players up here that have been discarded from other clubs through either behavioural issues or form. While some improve themselves (Bird, Myles, Kelly, Taylor etc) there is some stigma that Robina is a dumping ground for the other 15 clubs in the NRL. In relation to the Suns they have an exciting young team that is improving each season having been grown from the ground up when they joined the competition in 2011. They have the game’s greatest player in its ranks and they are now starting to turn Metricon Stadium into a bit of a fortress winning regularly. They do all they can to constantly involve the community and they are only going to improve on-field in the coming years. They had over 21K to the Swans two weeks ago, over 18K to Geelong on Saturday and the Collingwood game in two weeks will go close to selling out. They are on the up and the locals who enjoy Aussie Rules are getting on board. You only need to see the number of kids kicking the footy on the oval next door to see what the Suns are doing well. From a Gold Coast sporting perspective I have said it before and will say it again there are many sports that are being played up here. Surfing, Surf Lifesaving, Golf, Tennis in addition to Aussie Rules, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer to name but a few. Drive around town and there is just as many of each type of sport field as the next, nothing is completely dominant but the water sports would be on top overall in my opinion.

Crosscoder you have previously admitted that you holiday to the Gold Coast for about two weeks a year if I remember correctly? How is it you are such an authority on the Gold Coast sporting scene? Also why are the Lions constantly being trotted out in your arguments? This is an article about the Gold Coast.

Cathar You said the "TV Ratings really show that no many people care about the AFL in NSW and QLD." So...I posted the figures. Rather than hurl silly insults akin to "my favourite sport is better than your favourite sport"...I just posted the figures. I didn't make a comment about it at all. You responded by posting FTA figures for Saturday/Sunday for the AFL/NRL...but left out the AFL's Pay TV figures, which account for almost half. Seriously, what are you playing at?

Some fair points. League has become too predictable, however a few teams have been genuinely exciting to watch this year such as the Tigers and the Eels when they are on. But if Origin ratings are any indication then people are still happy with the product. But AFL fluid?... the ball spends more time bouncing around on the ground than anywhere else. The game relies too much on lucky bounces in my opinion. I think the AFL is more successful in the northern states because its spent the time and money marketing itself. The NRL hasn't bothered with promoting League down south. However TV rating are still very mild in NSW and QLD for AFL.
