2014 Brownlow Medal winner: It's Matt Priddis

By The Roar / Editor

Matt Priddis has secured the 2014 AFL Brownlow Medal with 26 votes in front of Gary Ablett (22), Lance Franklin (22), and to the delight of many, one vote clear of the ineligible Nathan Fyfe (25).

In what was one of the tightest and most thrilling Brownlow counts of recent years, coming down to the final round as Priddis sat three votes clear of potential threats to his outright victory, Patrick Dangerfield (21) and Travis Boak (21).

Franklin, who missed Sydney’s final round match against Richmond, and Ablett, sidelined for the final seven rounds of the season, were no threat to the victory.

In the end, a two vote match from Priddis in the final round saw him move past Nathan Fyfe (25) and secure an outright Brownlow Medal victory.

Priddis had the most disposals in the 2014 season, the second most clearances, and third most tackles of all players in the competition, but began the night as a $17 outsider.

His victory sees him become the third Brownlow Medalist from the West Coast Eagles and the first since Ben Cousins in 2005.

As expected, Gary Ablett took the early lead, before his votes came to a screaming halt, sitting out the final seven rounds of the season on 22 votes.

Round 19 saw the ineligible Nathan Fyfe move into top spot, one vote clear of Gary Ablett.

The dark horse, and eventual winner, Pridis, moved into the eligible lead (still behind Fyfe) following Round 20, as Fyfe kept his ineligible lead at 25 votes.

As AFL fans held their breath, Gillon McLachlan read “M. Priddis… 2 votes” during the final round to save Nathan Fyfe from becoming the first ineligible winner since Chris Grant in 1997.

Lance Franklin’s effort of 22 votes leaves him as the highest ever polling Coleman Medalist.

Geelong skipper, Joel Selwood, started the night as favourite, but fell short once again finishing the count with 21 votes.

Sydney’s Josh Kennedy was well placed entering the final rounds, but came to a halt with Selwood, Dangerfield and Boak on 21 votes, a hamstring injury seeing him sit out the final two rounds.

TOP FIVE:
1 – Matt Priddis (26)
2 – Nathan Fyfe* (25)
3 – Gary Ablett, Lance Franklin (22)
5 – Travis Boak, Patrick Dangerfield, Josh Kennedy, Joel Selwood (21)

Most medals are Bradburys because there are always players that have missed chunks of the season. Nat Fyfe's 4 missed games could have challenged Ablett's 7 missed games and Sammy Mitchell missed 9. There's 2 that might have beaten Ablett. Morabito only played one full game...he could have got over 50 votes...perhaps... That's the whole idea of the Brownlow. You give votes for performance on the field. Leuenberger? Rich? Scharenberg? Colin Sylvia...all he needed was to play! Luke McPharlin would have got over 30 votes. It's a silly argument. Here is a silly response.

Margetts?..don't you dare...He single-handedly cost Freo a place in tomorrow's pre-season match. But, you've gotta admit, 13th, Priddis' win has been warmly received by every AFL player that has commented and is universally well-received by critcs and fans. You are in the minority here.

It was a Bradbury brownlow - Ablett was clearly head and shoulders and still is - he also got all those votes being tagged unmercilessly - as to Matt Priddis - a lovely guy - a little bit Shane Woewoden win IMHO

Thanks for the lecture Jax have actually surprisingly enjoyed chatting even though we disagree on everything, but hey: it's an opinion website isn't it. You have yours which I completely disagree with but that's ok. Enjoy the Cricket Season and will catch up next year and compare predictions. So long Jax. Oh and Don, your not Dean Margetts in disguise by any chance are you?

Thank You Umpire Don. You're a Freo supporter that i can talk to all day because you are intelligent and open-minded. 13th I have a few points in response to your last post then we're done I hope. 1) just because you have friends that bang on about the 2006 WC flag don't assume that every WC fan is the same. We are all individuals and should be treated as such. Have you ever wondered why you have WC friends like that? Could it be because you are exactly the same as them? Maybe it's you that pushes them and they reply with with the 2006 flag comment? Who knows but irrespective you have the power within you to rise above that and behave differently, that's what leaders do. Don't blame other people for your actions and hatred, you own your feelings and actions so man up and take control. 2) Open your mind and take each person and topic on a case by case basis and drop the anti-WC no-matter what the topic stance. Give credit where it is due, that's what men do. I've noted that you still can't find the strength within yourself to acknowledge Priddis and that's a poor reflection on you, not on me, WC or Priddis. You're just making yourself and Freo fans look like bad sports. 3) I didn't have high expectations for WC in 2014, just like I didn't in 2013 so be careful with assumptions. That's why I'm not disappointed in their 2014 season and why I suggest you stick to the facts of each post and take things on a case by case basis. I thought they were a smokey for the 8 and if the Swans had wanted to win against the Tigers in that last game, they would have made the 8 so the gap isn't very big IMO and I expect improvement next year but there are no guarantees in footy and I could be totally wrong. 4) if you hate WC and their fans so much why do you put yourself through the pain of commenting on WC topics like this one? I think it's because it's not painful for you - I think you get pleasure out of knocking WC which is pretty shallow. That's what bullies do and it's usually because they have a chip on their shoulder. 5) be careful predicting who will win the derby (or anything) next year and stay humble. What would Lyon and Pav say if they heard you talking like this? Is that how they talk? Is that how Priddis spoke after his win? Is that how I've spoken in this thread? Over the years I've learned that ALL teams are never as good as people say they are and on the flipside they are never as bad either. Things can change quickly in this game and you may live to regret some of your comments. 6) You predicted WC will finish 10th or lower in 2015 and I predict they will finish 8th or higher. Let's see who right 12 months from now. In closing, I was very vocal on this thread because I have been a Priddis fan for many years and winning a Brownlow is a very rare feat so why wouldn't I be excited about it. I jumped on to congratulate him but people like you just couldn't help themselves from posting some pretty silly things. I thought that sharing some facts may help but some people have closed minds unfortunately. Jax out

As an umpire of this discussion between 13th and Jax...and despite being a Freo boy...the winner of this debate was Jax by quite a long margin. It was almost mercy rule time.

Yes Jax you are correct, I have a particular dislike for West Coast supporters that at the tiniest bit of success, go on and on and on. I have friends still boasting over the 2006 premiership Seriously that was 8 years ago! I am certainly looking forward to 2015 when once again WC come into the season with such high expectations and then once again fail to deliver! Enjoy being the bridesmaids for another year. Will catch up with you for another chat once Freo win another derby See you then Jax

so 3 votes MUST go to a player on the winning team. why can't you just congratulate Priddis and stop been a fool? and what has Mayne got to do with it and why do you keep bringing Freo into this discussion? http://www.afl.com.au/stats has Mayne in 56th place for tackles with an average of 4 per game for 2014. Pridda is 3rd with an average of 7.3 per game and you are now saying that Mayne is elite - again, Freo just has to be better at everything doesn't it and you are making up stories and coming up with anything you can before giving one inch of credit to WC. It's just bad sportsmanship in my eyes. I've got a headache chatting with you so I'm going to stop banging my head against your brick wall of a mind.

seriously 13th - this is a page about Matt Priddis winning the Brownlow. You have argued all along that he didn't deserve it and I tried debating with you why he was a worthy winner. which you still refuse to acknowledge. Then you started turning this into a Freo v WC argument for some strange reason? That's why it tastes of sour grapes mate, you obviously hate WC and it comes through in text. Earlier ^ you said that WC will slide and I said they will rise and make the 8. You reply with something about a premiership window opening which is crazy talk. How you take my comments about them rising (finishing 8th is rising btw) and turn that into a flag window is totally beyond me? Your posts are anti-WC and you've had numerous pot-shots at players on this page which is poor form. We should be celebrating a great Brownlow win for Priddis and you're turning it into a Freo v WC campaign which lacks respect and class. Over and out, nothing more to say. Let 2015 begin and let's see what happens.

Here's a FACT Jax WC did NOT beat a side above them on the ladder!!! FACT nothing screams premiership window opening quite like not beating a single contender. I know this is hard to accept Jax, but on that evidence there is only one direction Wet Toast look like going and that is DOWN! Also Jax, why do you and so many other toasters defend Nic Notacluey when you have two much better ruckmen having to play reserves in Lycett and Sinclair. They are stuck playing for East Perth whilst Prince Nic gets the royal treatment even though he fails week after week. time to cut your losses and part ways with him. And if you think it is only because of bad kicking that you didn't make the eight you are wrong. I could say bad kicking cost Freo the premiership last year but I don't because Hawthorn too their chances and we did not therefore they deserved to win. Bad Kicking is bad football Jax! therefore it is you Jax who is the sour grape because you make excuses for your sides mediocrity and cannot accept that WC are an average football side with a poor list that are only going one direction and that is down, FACT!!!!!!

Jax In regards to your argument about Priddis getting 3 votes in the Richmond game. I would 100 percent agree with you if WCE won the game, however they did not. Probably correct about Cotchin, didn't realise he got so few possessions but did kick a ripper goal. However I think getting 26 possessions on a winning side is still better than 30 in a losing side. Btw: you want elite tackling, Chris Mayne is a machine, averages 13 a game in the dry !!

oh 13th... WC are going downhill next year are they? I really don't think so I was stating facts. The WC midfield lacks depth and the shallower the depth the greater the impact, fact. 8 out of the 9 WC coaches were 1st year coaches this year, fact. WC didn't make the 8 this year (close but not good enough) but they should have after throwing away games against Port, Freo, Blues and Dons, fact. I don't care if Lyon, Scott and Hinkley took teams to the finals in their 1st year because you forgot some important facts. In the case of Freo Harvey took them to the finals in 2010 and they beat the Hawks in Week 1 and lost to the Cats in Week 2. They had massive injuries in 2011 and missed the 8 and hired Lyon who was gifted a great list, as was Scott at the Cats. Hinkely has been incredible no doubt. Why do you need to stoop to bagging Nic Nat (sour grapes as I keep saying). Nic hasn't done a preseason for 2 years when he was 21 but it looks like he might get one in this year. He won the AA that year, fact.

Don't try and use injuries as an excuse when there are sides above you that were cruelled by injuries more than you. Hawthorn and Fremantle suffered much greater injuries, try taking out 3 of your best players for a finals series and see how you fare!!! WC are only going downhill and this is on the back of some shocking recruitment calls that you will dread such as Naitinui over Rich and Hill and Tom Swift over Nat Fyfe and Ash Smith over Michael Walters. Also btw Port Finished 6th last year in Kenny's first year in charge Freo finish 6th in Ross's first year in charge AND Geelong win the premiership in Chris Scott's first year in charge!

sour grapes again 13th. WC went missing for a patch of 8-9 games in the middle of the year. Only 4 teams beat WC by 28+ points in 2014 and 3 of them finished Top 4 and the other was North. New coach, new game plan and tons of injuries so if that's as bad as it gets when they go missing I'll take it and gladly wait for 2015.

He's elite, a great player 13th. Let's get that straight first can we? I'll quote what you said... "The fact that Robbie Gray got 14 votes when he has singlehandedly helped Port Adelaide across the line in games and helped them make FINALS suggests to me that he was more influential than priddis across the season and henceforth is more deserving of the Brownlow" end quote That's ludicrous logic I'm sorry to say. Gray did this all single handidly you said and 'it suggests' to you that Gray is more deserving of the Brownlow? I thought Boak, Ebert, Wingard, Schulz etc had a lot to do with the Power winning and because they helped Gray they also stole votes off him which might explain why he didn't poll as many as you wanted him to. Unless you watched every Port & WC game you can't compare Gray & Priddis. I can't and I'm not trying to because I didn't see enough of Gray so how can you make a call like that for the reasons you've stated above? The AFL coaches voted Priddis as the 5th best player in the comp and Gray as the best. So if the coaches got Gray right (which I'm sure you will standby) one can't then backflip and say that they got it wrong with Priddis. How good is 5th best in the comp from the coaches anyway and all you can say is that he's 'a good player' - if he's the best in the umps eyes and 5th best in the coaches eyes and Top in 3 in the most important stats in the game then he has to be massively better than just 'a good player ' doesn't he? Give him some credit for goodness sakes and drop the sour grapes and think it through carefully. Interestingly both the umps and coaches vote straight after the game with the game fresh in their minds and before the media hype kicks in. My point is that you can't say anyone had a better season than Priddis unless you watched all games of both players and did a mini-count after each game to see the results for yourself. I'll happily debate this point with you after you've done that but not before because you have not watched all of Priddis games and therefore your point is mute.

Yes against the bottom sides, I'm sure he was a tower of strength and influence, but against the top sides he like the whole Eagles side went missing. Yes he is a good player, I am questioning whether he was the best player this year and considering who he got his votes against I do not think he was.

yes agreed but it seems a forward has to kick at least 8 to get votes, 4 is certainly an important contribution in a close win

Why don't you listen Jax? Winston makes the exact same point that I am trying to make, Priddis is a good player but not the most influential player on the ground and this is the problem that I have with how the umpires judge who gets 3 votes. The fact that Robbie Gray got 14 votes when he has singlehandedly helped Port Adelaide across the line in games and helped them make FINALS suggests to me that he was more influential than priddis across the season and henceforth is more deserving of the Brownlow
