The 2014 AFL Trade and Free Agency period has taken yet another unexpected twist today as 2013’s no 1 draft pick Tom Boyd has requested a trade to the Western Bulldogs after just nine games and eight goals in a single year at Greater Western Sydney.

So the day closes with just a single trade made as Allen Christensen joins Brisbane in exchange for pick 21.
The clock is ticking, and clubs have now just three days to finalise all remaining trades. Join us again tomorrow as the trade period continues!

Midfielder Allen Christensen has officially made the move from Geelong to Brisbane as the Cats receive pick 21 in return.
Mon, Oct 13, 2:43 PM
Hawthorn’s Luke Lowden has undergone a medical exam at Essendon. He has been linked to the Power and the Crows and now the Bombers after requesting a trade at the end of the season.

Little news to have broken with the Tom Boyd trade request dominating headlines.
However, a trade between Brisbane and Geelong for Allen Christensen is likely to be completed within the hour, with Brisbane set to give up pick 21 for the Christensen, who played in the Cats’ 2011 flag.

Now this is big news. The Western Bulldogs have announced via Twitter that last year’s no. 1 draft pick, 200cm key forward Tom Boyd, has requested a trade home to Victoria, with the Bulldogs his preferred destination.
The Club confirm we’ve been informed by Tom Boyd’s management he’ll seek a trade from @GWS_Giants to continue his career at the Bulldogs.
While the Giants have stated that they will not trade Boyd under any circumstances, they may change their tune if the Bulldogs state that it is the only way they will gain Griffen this trade period.
The no. 1 draft pick Boyd kicked eight goals in nine games in his first year with Greater Western Sydney but looks likely to develop into the focal-point key forward that the Bulldogs have been lacking ever since the retirement of Barry Hall.
My Take: Gutsy move by the Bulldogs to pinch one of the Giants young guns in response to the Griffen defection. Can’t wait to see how this one plays out.

The second week of trade period begins today and is expected to be one of the busiest in recent times.
Only three trades were successfully completed in the first week of the trade period, and there are as many as twenty players still looking to join new clubs before trade period officially ends at 2pm this coming Thursday.
Free Agency is officially over for the year with five confirmed movements, however there is the chance for delisted players to move as Free Agents later in the year.
Dayne Beams remains one of the most interesting names in this year’s trade period as the premiership midfielder continues to seek a trade to Brisbane, despite the Lions and the Magpies failing so far to strike a deal for him.
It is understood that Brisbane may be willing to increase their offer to be picks 5 and 25, along with young midfielder Jack Crisp, which could be enough to break the deadlock despite the Magpies reportedly calling off negotiations at 5pm on Friday.
Also in the balance is the future of Paddy Ryder for whom negotiations have stalled after the AFL blocked a plan that would see Essendon void his contract and let him become a Free Agent. With the Free Agency period now over, this certainly will not come to pass.
What is not certain is just how Ryder will make his way to Port Adelaide – if at all. He has ruled out staying at Essendon entirely, with his manager stating last week that Ryder may retire from AFL altogether if not granted a trade.
Making waves also is Ryan Griffen whose stunning request for a trade to Greater Western Sydney set off a series of events leading to the resignation of Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney on Friday. Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has said he hopes Griffen remains at the club to fulfil his contract, but a trade looks much more likely.
The confirmed movements so far are as such:
Jarrad Waite, Shaun Higgins signed to North Melbourne.
James Frawley signed to Hawthorn.
Nick Malceski signed to Gold Coast.
James Gwilt signed to Essendon.
Jonothan O’Rourke and pick 43 traded from Greater Western Sydney to Hawthorn for picks 19 and 40.
Jeff Garlett and pick 83 traded from Carlton to Melbourne for picks 61 and 79.
Joel Patfull traded from Brisbane to Greater Western Sydney for pick 21.

Not to mention the cash his manager is getting and who is about as honest as the contract is as close to Boyd's existing output. And of course almost zero percent to do with intangibles like "having a team built around him".

Which brings me back to the original point I made, the cash he gets in the next couple of years from the bulldogs won't be much more than he got from the Giants, but he is locking in more cash in the later years. If he played with th Giants this year and struggled to get a game behind Cameron and Patton, or played and played badly or got injured his ability to get that big money could be diminished or delayed. He is seeing an opportunity now to get some job security and taking it.

Plus he loves the cash that is being thrown at him.

Given neither of us have met him Dalgety both options could be true or it could just be that as his manager said he hates living in Sydney.

No dice Macca. If his ego was so "healthy" then it wouldn't matter where he played from that score. The fact that he would feel the need to have the conditions tailored for him just so, would indicate a fragility of ego.

Having your hopes repeatedly dashed may not have driven you mad Don but it has made your inane.

Paul D - Gumbleton was a big tall forward who was a very high draft pick and was going to be the next big thing, but for a variety of reasons he never succeeded and his contracts got lower and lower until he was forced into early retirement. There is absolutely no guarantee in football of job security unless you have a contract. Dalgety - I would suggest his decision to go to the bulldogs and have the team "built around him" shows a very healthy ego, I think he has the confidence to say I will go to a club with no other tall forwards and dominate. That attitude is very healthy for a key forward.

You are right about Buckley being a major problem for Collingwood.

I'd hate to be living your life! Denigrating hope? That explains everything about what informs your comments...very sad.

For you, job security is limited to a player’s opportunities at one club. I see job security as only being threatened when a player can’t get picked up at any club. After all, they are AFL footballers, not Carlton footballers, Bulldogs footballers or GWS footballers, etc etc. Someone should have given you the 10 count ages ago in this thread, you’re being smashed on multiple fronts. I notice you’ve dropped that inane Gumbleton line of argument like a hot coal as well.

Sorry Macca, unusually you may have missed my point. Is that due to laziness, lack of care for team success, or rigidity? Does he not back himself in to be no. 1 no matter what, or at least show a willingness to adapt his game so it fits in to a game plan/team structure that is going to maximise team success. He could go anywhere and, through one circumstance or another find himself competing with others for the no. 1 key forward post, including the Bulldogs. Surely that's what you'd want though. The more the merrier. In fact having a 3 pronged attack that works would almost guarantee you maximum team success.

He's probably been offered the coaches job.

Sometimes the cruelest thing you can do is to give someone hope Don, it can send people mad.

It means he will be "the" key forward at the club for the next decade, the franchise player if you will. It means not having to be worried about being squeezed out like 1 of the 3 at GWs is bound to be. It means the bulldogs will have a foundation stone from which to build. Is it really that difficult a concept?

Great trade period by Hawthorn getting Frawley, as well as a potential jet in O'Rourke, for next to nothing Now, the icing on the cake news that we are going to jettison space junk like Ryan Schoenmakers. If Giles ends up at the vile mass from Windy Hill, it will improve our prospects of a better deal with the Crows. Meaning we could package Schoey, Luke lowden and Kyle Cheney, and try to get their first pick, at 10 Doubtful, that they would be dumb enough to offer pick 10, but, nice to have fantasies :) http://bit.ly/1su68Q8 As for the rest, it seems absurd that Brissy are offering so much for Beams, when their first two picks should be enough. I guess the trade dealings of both Geelong and Collingwood highlights the class of the Cats, and lack of class of the Pies...I just cannot understand why Brissy are allowing themselves to be bullied when they hold all the leverage in the dealings, due to Beams wanting to join them. Then, I cannot understand the lack of respect the Pies has for Beams, sure, they want just compensation, but, the lads Da is ill, and they should factor this into negotiations to make it a speedy transaction. it would be awesome if the Dogs could keep Griffen, and get Boyd, but unlikely- so, a case of who blinks first, if anyone.... Hopefully Paddy Ryder gets to Port as well

I'm with you Franko. Go where you're sent...then move when you can if you haven't fallen in love with your first posting. GWS should have played him more often if they valued him. Some purple people would value him. You don't see people wanting to leave happy clubs.

I'm curious, what exactly does "build a team around me" mean and why would it be such an attractive proposition for him to make so early a career defining decision? Is it that he won't have to evolve much as a footballer because they'll conform to whatever is comfortable to him? Or is it that success isn't as important as him feeling comfortable with the game plan? Or that the club will indulge all his whims and bad habits so he ends up like Fev? Or something else?

Well they can be a bit surer of a game at Carlton.
