Paul Gallen has $15,000 shaved off fine for foul tweet

By The Roar / Editor

Cronulla and NSW Blues captain Paul Gallen has had $15,000 of his $50,000 fine suspended after submitting evidence to the NRL.

Gallen was fined $50,000 last month for a tweet where he called administrators at the NRL “c***s” following the departure of Sharks CEO Steve Noyce.

He was immediately slapped with a $50,000 breach notice, which many felt was an over-the-top punishment for the crime.

NRL CEO Dave Smith said that if Gallen breaches of the Code of Conduct again in the next 12 months, the suspended $15,000 will be imposed.

He confirmed that the “mitigating information” that Gallen supplied convinced them to suspend the amount, but said they respected Gallen’s desire that the information supplied remain private.

“The original penalty was appropriate based on the seriousness of the incident and the information before us at the time,” Mr Smith said.

“But, based on the additional information provided to us by Paul in a submission and at a meeting with the NRL, we have decided to suspend part of the fine.”

Gallen will also have to complete a leadership course to be eligible for Kangaroos selection in 2015.

“This remains one of the biggest financial penalties imposed on an individual player because it involved one of the most senior and influential people in our game,” Mr Smith said.

“We recognise that Paul has been through a lot over the last two years but that does not excuse such a serious breach of the code.

“We must protect our brand and ensure we set a good example to children and other fans.

“So we will continue to be vigilant against any behaviour which brings the game into disrepute.

“But we are also sensitive to player welfare issues and that is why we have modified the penalty in this case.”

What do you think Roarers? Is this the right move from the NRL? Was the original punishment for Paul Gallen too harsh?

The penalty for Gallen is a joke 50 k for knocking Smith and Grants pathetic egos a little ,wow they came down so hard on Gallen. maybe there is something to what gallen was saying about Noyce actually caring about the players rather than seeming to care or “protecting the brand’ as Smith said. As for rubbing Carney out of the game, how does getting drunk and making a fool of yourself get you kicked out of the NRL while bashing your wife or girlfriend get you a little suspension or a fine ,what a joke the NRL bosses are, everything they do and every move they make is to protect their own butts and image and paypackets nothing to do with care for the players or obviously the players wives and girlfriends. Gallen shouldn’t have sprayed them on social media but maybe he was spot on in what he was saying. At least Gallen had the balls to say what most of the clubs and a lot of league supporters are already thinking about the little men at the top at NRL headquarters.

" “mitigating information” that Gallen supplied" which will "remain private"
Way too convenient and not credible. What new information did he give them? An updated home address? Perhaps he has discovered a repressed memory condition which kicks in every time people are mean back to him. This galoot ticks all the boxes for sniveling bully boy.
"Gallen will also have to complete a leadership course to be eligible for Kangaroos selection in 2015."
That will be "Pack your bags son, you'll be right - just turn up on a couple of Tuesday nights for a month and have your name marked on the roll." He's too cool to learn stuff. Quite apart from that isn't he already captain of somewhere? State of Origin or Cronulla club? Clearly he doesn't have any idea what it means and no amount of formal lecturing can possibly make up for his absent wit. He publicly abuses the games' top executives with the foulest of language and these very same fools cannot get to the front of the march past quick enough, to salute their hero.

Oh :P Cheers for clearing that up. I thought it was the one where Tahu walked out mid-week because of the slur. NSW went down 34-6 to lose 2-0 :P

Is Dave Smith really Gal's boss? Would have thought he'd report to the Sharks Club Chairman considering his club is in direct competition with 15 other clubs. The NRL administers the competition for all 16 individual club entities. While Gallen deserves sanction... it certainly isn't as heinous a stain as any kind of violence towards women. The NRL being a male dominated code should be at the forefront of any fight against this sort of violence. First convicted offence should be a life ban. Send the message, leave the ambiguity to other sporting codes.

He got slugged $35,000 at this juncture ,hardly a slap on the wrist. How that sends a bad message is beyond me.He has been publicly maligned and despite his plea bargaining still gets a decent financial whack. The guy has done some dumb things in his career, but one can argue the last two years of conjecture, public lashings about ASADA,is hardly conducive to anyone getting a good night's sleep, and walking around the public domain with your head held high. If this led to his depression ,and I know the devastating effects within my environs, maybe we should tread a little lighter.

Dav, Silver Sovereign is a QLDer. If you read his comments on the Cricket tab he is actually very knowledgeable, focussing on the game itself. Unfortunately when it comes to the Union and League tabs, he is a tr0ll, with his only aim to fish for comments. Now that is his choice to act that way and you have to respect that. But he certainly lets himself down in my opinion.

Scott, Agree.... as I've said from the start, Gallen's punishment is the right one. But when you look and compare it to the punishment a guy that beat up on a woman gets.... I think Gallen has every reason to feel hard done by.

Ben No mate, different: Gallen was guilty of calling St George Illawarra forward Micky Paea a "black c..." during the Sharks' 26-4 loss to the Dragons at Toyota Park in 2009. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/racial-slur-puts-10000-hole-in-paul-gallens-pocket/story-e6frg7mf-1225716189258?nk=72adc4e80f3a1e4071238dd4d5f01ac3

Rene There was a very good reason why the Storm did not hang on to Auva’a.. Domestic violence is an easy one for me: 12 months out of the game and 2nd offence life.

I think it was Andrew Johns that called Inglis a black c--- in Origin, if we're talking about the same incident.

Did the new evidence confirm that the NRL have been c**ts? Maybe the reduced fine is because Gal was right.

Gallen is the best forward of the modern era. The way he has been targeted and persecuted by all and sundry is terrible. No way a QLDer would ever be treated like that. They can get away with anything without punishment. I always hear about a pro NSW conspiracy. I think that's all cover for the blatant bias towards the QLDers.

Interested to hear your thoughts about the punishment handed to Auva'a..... I wonder if you're just as filthy about what "little johnny" thinks.

Convicted drug taker is enough for me. Its a disgrace that the NRL paid any of his lawyer fees. It shows they aren't serious about cleaning up the game. They should be ashamed.
