[VIDEO] Newcastle Jets vs Brisbane Roar highlights: A-League scores

By Michael Georgiou / Roar Guru

MATCH RESULT:

Brisbane Roar have picked up their first win of the season in emphatic fashion – knocking over the Newcastle Jets, 4-0.

After a scoreless first half, the Jets provided minimal resistance to the Roar with Henrique coming off the bench to score a brilliant hat-trick.

Newcastle remain winless and have some real soul searching to do while Brisbane will take some confidence from the win – though they were still far from convincing.

The defending A-League champions have looked anything but a championship wining side in the opening rounds of the A-League season.

After losing some key players in the off season, the Roar have looked average at best and will desperately need to string some victories together if they are to defend their title.

Newcastle on the other hand, have had the second hardest start to the season in terms of their travel commitments.

The Newcastle based side have had to play their opening month of football away from their home ground of Hunter Stadium and looked rejuvenated last week despite only grabbing a point from Kevin Muscat’s victory.

For the Roar, their goalkeeper Jamie Young must find some form and confidence in between the sticks. With large boots to fill, Young has been out of his depth since arriving to replace an injured Michael Theo and will need to improve on his recent performances if his side is to grab their first win of the season.

Conversely, former Socceroo David Carney will be looking to terrorise the Brisbane defence with his near perfect deliveries. Carney has completed the most crosses so far this season for any team and should his deliveries continue, the Brisbane defence could be in for a long night.

Playing at home for only the second time this season, the Jets should prove too much for the Roar who will struggle.

Prediction: Jets 2-0 Roar

Actually I did a bit of research in this new thing called the internet (forgot about that thing) and it originated from Cambridge and was awarded to the lowest scorer in an exam who still earned their third class degree in mathematical trepos. The first time it was used in sport was to describe the worst rugby union team in what we now know as the 6 nations due to the great number of Cambridge graduates trying to revive the term. It became immensely popular in Australia and NZ with both the major football codes in Australia at the time adopting the term (aussie rules and rugby league). Today we now refer to the worst team in every football code in Australia and NZ as the wooden spooners. Including the afl, NRL, a-league, ITM cup, super rugby, and the NRC.

It comes from AFL, its not a Football term as we dont use it. You are better off getting an answer from the AFL tab.

Don't worry Az, Jets and Mariners to play out for the wooden spoon.

RBBA - none of the players looked like they wanted to move to the ball when passed - some passes were just dire and directionless - noticeable that Carney etc. were hugging the side line even when the ball was on the other side. Didn't help being behind opposing players. - few midfield players were getting themselves into positions to receive, or some ran off looking for a ball that had no chance of getting through the number of orange shirts (Roar at times had 5-6 in defensive line). - some players didn't seem to want to be there tonight...Griffiths not a happy camper I think and that's saying something. Carney also at times. - Stubbins had a tactical switch later in game bringing Griffiths and Montaño centrally but all too late. Montaño looked a little tired late on from defensive running in midfield. - if we have some quality players why aren't we using them? Tactically we are a mess and not using players. I think we need Neumann, Flores, Montaño, Griffiths, Carney starting, not (for some) being held in reserve and not playing at all. - some players coming off injury tonight looked a little slow but understandable. No excuses for the likes of Regan who needs to be benched from last round.

The strange thing is you have got the players to do well, but from what I saw tonight the players just aren't playing for each other. No one was playing in support. Totally absent midfield. Carney trying to bomb these ridiculous 30-40m passes and hit them on a dime. It was beyond stupid. He should know better. A few times he should have passed and went with the ball, meantime Joel Griffiths throws his hands up in exasperation. No one could make a simple pass. Taylor Reagan get caught out by Henrique as well not once but twice cutting inside on his right foot, FFS. You know he likes to cut inside steer him so he goes wide, give him the sideline. I am puzzled like everyone else and you have two foreign spots being taken up on the bench with Flores and Neumann. Something is not right at Newcastle and something has got to give. I know its a cliche but I would say that Stubbins has lost the dressing room because it was school boy stuff out there.

You cant read much into this match. The Newcastle Jets were woeful tonight. In fact I would go far as to say they should be giving the money back to the punters. Just woeful. Not sure how you can get worse from Gary Van Egmond but apparently its easy, you hire Phil Stubbins. Maybe I am being a bit harsh because they played pretty well against the Victory the other weekend. It was just dire stuff. The Victory should be able to pump Brisbane 3-1 or 4-1 next week.

You'll have to replicate the dire rubbish that was served up under Aloisi to understand what hopelessness and mediocrity really feels like. Hope you don't have to sink that low.

I thought I'd missed half time... ...couldn't believe it was only 30 minutes into the game. Keep playing like we want to prop up the bottom of the table and Stubbins won't see out the season. Going to be a looooong season at this rate

Don't feel sorry for us, we are feeling more than sorry enough for ourselves. Wooden spoon on the way with a record points low I reckon. Stubbins out - reasons to follow

I meant to say to start the season but that's truly hideous to lose 5 straight as defending champs. That was just after they suffered their first loss in however many games as well wasn't it?

Despite getting the win tonight, the Roar far from impressed me. The Jets provided minimal resistance to the Roar. I must say, I feel extremely sorry for the Newcastle fans but lets hope that their side can turn around their fortunes next week. Thats all from me - thanks for joining me!
