Raiders set to name 41-year-old Ken Nagas for Auckland nines

By News / Wire

Canberra have confirmed that 41-year-old former premiership player Ken Nagas will be named in the Raiders’ Auckland Nines squad for the end of month tournament.

The Raiders said Nagas is training with the side, the club making application to the NRL for him to participate in the tournament.

That application has yet to be approved.

With other 40-somethings Brad Fittler and Steve Menzies turning out at last year’s inaugural nines tournament, Nagas said he was looking forward to pulling on the green jumper again.

“I’m really excited about being back in training and hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to play for the Raiders again,” Nagas said.

“I’ve been working really hard on my fitness for the nines and hopefully I can add something to our young squad.”

Nagas was part of the Raiders’ premiership winning team in 1994, scoring two tries in the grand final win over Canterbury.

The only thing I would like to say about players who have retired like, Fittler, Menzies and now Nagas is, WHAT A BLOODY JOKE! The NRL should have a good long look at itself, If it want's the NINES format to survive long term!

Unfortunately Nine play sports broker thanks to dodgy anti siphoning legislation. Today they signed a deal with Cricket Australia and Apple TV. Apple TV will still run Nine ads and allegedly, no money will change hands. Nine are currently still the king maker. We need IPTV to take off, anti siphoning laws to be repealed and come next contract deal, Nine are dead. I'll dance on their grave!

he's been as good as most of his team mates. a large part of it is publicity no doubt but hes still easily good enough to warrant a spot in a domestic t20 team. given that fact i dont see how its comprmising the comp to have him there.

I cant see 9's getting any big just because of the risk each team takes by playing there best players in a 2 day tournament a month before the NRL season kicks off. It will always just be glorified trial games unless it is played at a different time of the year, jn saying this it still enjoyable to watch and i cant wait. And as far old players having a run im all for it if there fit. Brad fittler was a hero to me when i was 9-10 so when i herd he was having a run i was stoked. Its only good for the game, i bet if andrew johns or darren lockyer had a run there would 10× more people watching on TV.

Won't be that long though. Technology travels pretty quick. You say foreseeable future but I would be shocked if it isn't the norm within 10 years. Sport is more about refresh rates and fps than x number of K's at this point though. But this is all improving as well. If I was 9 I would be looking at skipping a level and going straight to 4K. They need something to set them apart from internet tv...

I'm a big fan of T20 now because I can even drag the wife along. We were all set to go to Hobart v Sydney when we were down that way in Dec. but it rained and possibly hailed in the afternoon so that kind of put an end to that. But the missus was even looking forward to it I think. What I was saying about the 9's in its current form is that I love the carnival atmosphere.

I think Noel Kelly still has a pair of boots in the back of his car, what about him? Or was it Ned?

The concept of the 9s is for young up-and-coming players, not old guys well past their prime. The organisers want to nip this in the bud otherwise the 9s will go the way of the 7s in league.

Not all about us. T20 attracting new cricket fans. Can we give Kenny a break from the cricket. Apologies for bringing it up. I reckon Cliffy would be a nightmare on a day 4 turner.

Mate, Flintoff had been out of the game for five years and he was advertised as one of the big draw cards. He has taken 6-7 games of an 8 game season to get up to speed. He is a gimmick siging. I would rather play ramp shots to a guy bowling 140 than facing a good spinner on a raging day 4 turner or a fast bowler on a first day green top any day. It is a bit depressing to see how much esteem is given by fans to things like the ramp shot.

Harsh call Rellum. T20 different skill set, ramp shots to pill more than 140km/h takes big nackers. Great to see the level of skill when the fear of getting out is removed. That said, I doubt Kenny N gives a toss. 93 or 94: Nagas 100m effort v Dragons...glide..perfect term, Rellum.

8K is a fantasy unless then can broadcast live in 8K. The biggest budget movies are only shot in 5K now will be so for the foreseeable future, so there is going to be no content for 8k. 4K is another story.

Tour idea a cracker. Ha! Be awkward at first learning true identities...nickname tags in the tour booty. Whilst i agree 9s is not designed to out grow 13s, we shouldnt pigeon hole it. Let the punters decide. Could be a useful tool to spread the game globally...dont me make me mention other codes 7s. Not saying NRL and SL would have to field a tour, may be second tier. Just ideas, but a form of the game not to be restricted. As a cricket purist, i wasnt a T20 fan at first...cant get enough now. Cheers

T20 hasn't moved to a serious level. It is still chock full of gimmick players who are long retired but still have a hit out once a year in the BBL. Once guys like Flintoff are not wanted by the teams then you can call it a serious comp. That said it will be great to see Kenny "QLD" Nagas glide down the sideline.

It could just become part of the fun of the tournament, every year a few older guys get rolled out. Lets face it by June no one's ever cared who wins the 7's 9's or whatever shorterned version we want to make it. It's all supposed to be a little fun with enough money on the line to make sure people compete.

The union equivalent would be the Hong Kong sevens wouldn't it?

It isn't supposed to grow to that level though Jason. It will never be a big bash, which is essentially the same length as a proper game of footy. People need to enjoy it for what it is, a fun carnival where you can watch some of the best athletes in the world strut their stuff. I reckon us Roarers should organise a trip to the 2016 comp. It would be a hoot. I am going to try and get over to it anyway.

The inaug..inorg...inaug....first 9s last year was a great success partly because of its novelty. If Interest is not allowed dip to in the next then sending players like Nagas will have to stop. Or is this a pre season jolly that will run its course and eventually disappear?
