Broncos must do everything to re-sign Thaiday: Hodges

By News / Wire

Skipper Justin Hodges has launched a passionate plea for Brisbane to re-sign Sam Thaiday amid speculation the benched back-rower is playing for his future at the NRL club.

NSW forward Beau Scott has been linked to the Broncos after a report claiming ex-skipper Thaiday has until the end of April to show he is worthy of a contract extension.

Thaiday, 29, has been relegated to the bench by coach Wayne Bennett after showing up to pre-season training overweight and an underwhelming round-one display.

Contract talks have reportedly been put on hold until the end of next month so the Broncos can gauge Thaiday’s form.

Brisbane great Gorden Tallis added to the intrigue surrounding 12-year Broncos veteran Thaiday, saying he wouldn’t be surprised to see Bennett favourite Scott arrive at the club next year.

But Tallis also slammed the Broncos on Triple M radio on Monday, saying it was embarrassing that they had aired Thaiday’s “dirty laundry” by leaking the news that the 200-plus game stalwart was on a six-week trial.

Hodges stood up for his besieged teammate on Tuesday, saying he would pick Thaiday over Scott “every day of the week”.

“The club has got to do everything they can to keep him,” he said.

“Over 10 years, he has been one of our best players every week.

“I am sure a deal will get done. You need a Sam Thaiday in your team.”

Hodges did not know what to make of the Scott speculation.

“He’s a great player; he gets under everyone’s skin; he does that quite well,” he said.

“He’s a quality player you’d love to have in your side.

“But if I had a choice over him or Sam, I would pick Sam every day of the week.”

Asked how much longer he could play, Thaiday said: “Another four years, easy.

“None of this talk is coming from us. I think it is a bit of a beat up.

“I don’t read the paper; I stay away from watching the news – I just continue doing my job.”

When told of Tallis’ passionate defence of him, Thaiday said: “That’s what mates do – they stick up for mates.”

Thaiday claimed he had not wondered how his Broncos bench role would affect his Queensland State of Origin and Test prospects.

“It (bench) is the role I have to play for the team,” he said.

“In the end, footy is what is going to get me a deal so I am not too worried about it at all.”

Thaiday needs to work on his ball carrying... Too much he goes into contact, and the way he does it, contributes to him going to ground... Running directly into someone square on, pushing with arms close, then he goes down straight away, even after pushing the tackler off... Every time he carries... He needs to do something else... fight for metres, run to outside/inside shoulders...

Wayne Bennett 2014 to Darius Boyd: "Keep having those bad games Darius, I don't care. You have 6 weeks to prove how bad you are so the club will let you leave..... who knows you may end up at brisbane, where even if your form is bad for an international player the club won't mind". Wayne Bennett 2015 Sam Thaiday" "Your form does not warrant another contract here mate, you have 6 weeks to play for your future. Look at darius and how well he is going, you should take note. That kind of work ethic sits well with me".

First new play in twenty years, - that's funny mate. I hear what you're saying, but I can't get around the fact Benny has spoken eloquently to the media more in three rounds, than he has in my memory. Doesn't the media call it filler? Maybe he's simply negotiating Sammies price down, before his contract comes up.??

Bennett doesn't normally throw his own players under the bus. He usually stirs up the media to draw attention to himself and away from the playing group. Publicly bagging one of his own players is the first new play I've seen from Bennett in 20 years.

Blair made 150+ metres on Friday with 27 tackles for no misses. Other than his (in Wayne Bennetts words) "Benji Marshall" moment of play when the game was already won he played great. Last week he was dog awful in attack only. He still made 30+ tackles for no misses and didn't give away any customarily stupid penalties. Alex Glenn on the other hand...

Far as I know Tallis is the only one who has said Scott to Brisbane, and I just don't think it's true. Brisbane have too many BRFs as it is and simply adding Scott to provide "mongrel" doesn't sound feasible for either party. Scott wanting to go back to sydney for family (and he wouldn't be getting very much from Brisbane anyway), and Brisbane with three rep back rowers and one fringe rep back rower. If anything Bennett will move Thaiday on to make more space for Gagai in case they have to get into a bidding war with the Titans. Once again though this is all rumour and innuendo. It's not the same as when Manly flat out didn't offer G. Stewert a contract. He will have to take a paycut to stay but name a one club player who never took a paycut in their career (other than the big three at Melbourne) In many ways though I feel sorry for Thaiday. He's had an overstuffed 18 months of league with the only thing he missed I can recall was the 9s this year. No wonder he came back a little overweight. The bloke is stuffed.

Uncle Wayne is holding Sammy out there as a sacrificial annode for the media, to protect other players who should be copping the criticism. Typical Bennett misinformation. He's been doing it for years.

Sam’s going nowhere - Gordy’s & Hodgo are right!!! Someone else agendas are being played here in order to suit their own conspiracy theory….pathetic really!!!! Famous Wayne Bennett words – if you listen to them you’ll end up sitting with them!!!

Also if I remember correctly he almost walked out of Newcastle before coaching a single game when management demanded Snowden be signed at any cost. (Somewhere in the 500-600 range at the time I believe) Petero was moved on when management promised him more money after Webcke retired (without consulting Bennett first which was one of the incidents that had him looking for a new club.), something Bennett quickly put a stop to. I think the reasoning would be that as good as FRFs can be at the end of the day it's the spine that matters most, and tying up all your money in props and second rowers isn't the best idea. Same probably goes for wingers as well.

i just do not think that Bennett will pay the big wages for the forwards, that they had under the other coaches and management. In his first stint at Brisbane, I am pretty sure that he said he would only pay top forwards around $300,000. i really like Sam, but I believe that he has started to believe his own publicity, and is predictable in his play. Add to that the lazy penalties, and it is not hard to see why Bennett has moved him a little bit closer to the door. A former Brisbane forward, Carl Webb, apparently got a bit big for his boots, and showed Bennett the star on his elbow, telling him that it was to remind everyone that he was a star. Result, bye bye Carl.

Scott is also contracted to the knights until 2017 there are rumors he was going to ask for a release to move back to Sydney for family reasons. I cant see him getting a release to head to Brisbane

I'd love to see him return to Townsville and play for the Cowboys. They could certainly use him at the moment. He hasn't been that bad this season. I don't understand why he's copping all the criticism from Bennett when his little pet Blair has been awful.

That's what happens when you get old. One club players need to be superb professionals or they will fill in a hole and not try as hard, I don't think Thaiday has that.

I looks pretty obvious the Broncos want to free up a good chunk of cash to let Benny bring Scott to Brisbane ! Bugger loyalty in this business. Sam will have to move to maintain his current salary , just like Petro had to do a few years back !
