Where is NRL boss Dave Smith?

By David Lord / Expert

Last Friday night at ANZ Stadium was the worst possible advertisement for rugby league, demanding an up-front appearance from NRL boss Dave Smith.

Far more than a response on Twitter and a belated media release.

Here we are five days later and even Smith’s early-season demand that referees be shown more respect and support has fallen short.

Bulldogs skipper James Graham and his benchman forward David Klemmer were charged with abusing referee Gerard Sutton and didn’t defend the charge.

It was indefensible.

Graham was also charged with a dangerous tackle on Souths half Adam Reynolds to cop four weeks all up – probably two weeks for each charge.

Klemmer was the more serious abuse charge and he copped three weeks, while Michael Lichaa got off scot free for his abuse of referee Sutton, thanks to an early guilty plea.

Is Smith serious?

If he wants to discourage players from abusing referees, don’t bash them with a feather when they step over the line.

Klemmer should have copped at least six weeks, Graham at least six with the double charge, and Lichaa three for just being plain stupid as the third man in.

And both Graham and Lichaa should have joined Klemmer in the bin.

It’s a well known fact refs genuinely want to keep 26 men on the paddock for a level playing field.

But if the refs are going to stand up for themselves, they must bin, or red card and have no regrets about either.

And when the culprits appear before the judiciary, they know there’s a long holiday awaiting them because Dave Smith decreed it.

It appears he’s decreed nothing, giving the judiciary the flimsy feather instead.

As for the unruly and potentially dangerous crowd reaction last Friday night, hurling full bottles of drink and other rubbish at match officials is not good enough and never acceptable. What’s happened to the life-long bans promised for the guilty?

Not a peep.

Could it be that some of the culprits are respected Bulldog members?

The whole affair has been unsavoury, and just as badly handled. Rugby league is a great game and deserves better than that.

And the code needs a CEO who stands up to be counted in public when the muck hits the fan, just as John Quayle and David Gallop always did before him.

I'm sure if AFL had this type of thing happen some how something good would be said.

Fair enough mate, Gallop has a far more distinguished NRL career than I do, his public image was very reactive though. That was by far the least important part of this comment though.

Mate I'm a Bronco's fan, I couldn't care less about the Bulldogs. I believe refs have to start marching people until they get the point. But why should one club pay the penalty for a code wide poor attitude?

Christo....but when it comes down to football ,righty or wrongly the game has evolved and in doing so lost all the old faithfulls and welcomed in an entire new breed of supporters. On the lighter side of things the off field entertainment was far better when we had Laurie Nicholls parading along the sideline, and I am sure the tomato sauce was better on the hot dogs...moot points but still..

Oh my lord, this is rubbish. Why should Smith front the media every time something goes wrong... Its been explained in plenty of other comments. Really the only point of this comment is the first line.

a few issues we discussed at work today: - hasler and toovey by far the worst coaches for always blaming refs - gus gould is just as bad - the game is very gladiatorial so is always going to be hard to sell to mums and a proportion of players don't return to "normal" behaviour outside of game time Don't shoot the writer (David Lord) for expressing an opinion.

Because of all the knee-jerk rule changes and the hiring of his yes-men and women on big bucks who know nothing about the game. The NRL was going to get the TV deal regardless of who the CEO was so the money would be there- in fact more money as there wouldn't be so many needless jobs at NRL HQ. Rightly or wrongly he's blamed for things that are wrong with the game, such as: •Video refereeing standards •The referees having to guess try or no try, with the video ref having to prove him wrong to overturn it •Ridiculously inconsistent judiciary •Uncapped Third Party Agreements being abused by a select few clubs, which has rendered the salary cap useless. •Poor scheduling; how many times do you see a team coming off a 5 day turnaround, coming up against a team that has had 7-8 days turnaround? I think the whole subject of the article is due to the fact we always used to see the big boss front-up when the shite hit the fan, and Lordy should of been more understanding of the fact Dave "Benji Barba" Smith couldn't be everywhere without a licence, I mean his limo driver probably had the long weekend off, and besides he's got lackeys to pick up the slack anyhow. As Jay C has said, the CEO should be seen in hard times as well as the good.

I think Des (Hollywood) Hasler is running the NRL PR dept at present? More news conferences than ken Sutcliffe past few weeks Maybe his players are following his poor thoughts and respect of refs Guess we need to get one of his family to ref all bulldog games to get his approval

What should be done has been obvious for a long time. If the ref can send nearly every try upstairs, then why not the confusing penalties. They do it in the NFL in the USA and it works. The players and the crowds get an explanation and that douses the kindling. The players never behaved this way when they all had jobs because they played for love. Now that they are all wannabe megastars they still have the same heart as the old days, but they have to justify there earnings. If you want to keep refs in the noname lower grades and the 'fun for the kiddies' grades, then the game should have to be as professional as the player paypackets.

Fans are more disillusioned with the game nowadays and it's officialdom. I am not referring to what happens on the field as far as what the players are giving us. My gripe is with how the game is officiated and the processes in which it is run. Referees use the video much more now and with edict to go upstairs with a decision is a backwards step (IMO). I think that if you throw in the move of an additional ref and the number calls being incorrectly made - it has gotten worse. I throw in the handling of off-field incidents and the way those are handled in there as well. I'm pretty critical of rugby league and have been all my life, I think we have gotten worse in these areas.

Not enough time on the sidelines for those Bulldog Grubs. The Dogs fans have a rich history of trouble, and the Spuths match was nothing different. As for the management of the sport - don't envy Smith trying to reign in a horde of buffoons. They wonder why they have so much trouble at junior league games - all the keyboard warriors should get down to some local junior league and see how bad an influence these bogans are on young players. Time for a 5 minute yellow card for any form of remonstrating with the ref. will soon shut the neurologically challenged apes on the field up pretty quick.

Why David Loyd? Why... Whenever you hear the guy speak it's articulate and on point and intelligent. He doesn't probably have time to deal with that stuff on the media. Problem much?
