What your stats do not have is context. You are basically comparing other locks who play too loose to in tight players. I agree Timani is not a genuine lock and is better suited to 6 though. How effective are the tackle, the runs, and at the ruck. Skelton makes his runs through multiple defenders since it always takes multiple tacklers which creates holes and he then offloads. Both Skelton and Timani smash players back in tackles. Both gain the advantage line in tight. Both smash players off rucks. Basically you make the mistake of just rewarding work rate rather than impact, this is why we get 2 light weak locks like Carter and Simmons and get smashed and manhandled every game. Skelton is more like Retallic than any other player we have. Skelton also destroys mauls in defense and is very useful pushing in them in attack.

This scoring system is questionable if it doesn't take into account what the players are actually achieving on the park rather than the opinions of fans. The best example is with the Locks. I continue to struggle to understand how anybody can consider that Skelton and Timani can EVER be considered as a credible/effective Lock pairing under ANY circumstances. Skelton averages 1.5 Line Out Wins per game and Timani only 0.5 LOW per game. Australia's best Locks are averaging >5 LOW per game (Simmons, Smiler, Coleman) and others ~4 per game (Carter, Dennis, Jones). Skelton is averaging 18m of carries per game and Timani only 15m. Other Australian Locks are averaging >20m (Coleman - 26m; Jones - 23m; Dennis - 21m) Skelton is making 6 tackles (92%) per game; Timani 9 tackles (85%). Jones (95%) and Arnold (87%) both average 10 tackles per game. Timani misses 1.5 Tackles per game (as does Arnold). At least Skelton misses only 0.5 Tackles per game (as does Dennis and Jones) Both Skelton (0.8) and Timani (0.7) concede close to a Penalty every game. Simmons, Dennis, Jones and Arnold average <0.3 Penalties per game. Timani does have excellent Ruck involvement (about the same as Coleman and Dennis). Skelton is very much middle-of-the road with Ruck Involvement (about the same as Carter but more than Jones or Arnold). Timani show potential as a 6. Skelton falls short on too many measures for a test Lock. Under the criteria provided, how can Gill be considered as a 6??

I like this beefcake second row with the jumpers in the backrow. Sio Moore Kepu Timani Skelton Fardy Pocock Higginbotham With a bench of Slipper Latu/Polota-Nau/Hanson/Faingaa/Leafa/Charles/Mann-Rea/Siliva (did I miss anyone?) Holmes Simmons Palu Would be an outfit I wouldn't mind seeing.

Except for the team of the round it is accumulated over all the rounds to date. Since they are at the bottom and only won 2 it is hardly a surprise. Louwrens did make the team of the round.

There is something seriously wrong with your formula if not a single Force player makes it into the team anywhere. Not even last week when they beat the Tahs.

Thank you ThugbyFan. Agree I would swap McMahon for Fardy since Fardy is better in lineouts and calls them. Otherwise it is the pack I would choose. It is great to see how many key forwards are in form with the exception of experienced locks. The issue in the backs is that no winger or no 10 has been in consistent form. In the other positions only 1 f/b, o/c and halfback is in form so no real pressure is applied especially when the form halfback is a new guy. At i/c only 2 are in form. The backs in general are out of form. This is a complete reversal to the other years I ran this. Normally the backs were running riot and multiple contenders for each position in form and the forwards struggled. The problem it highlights though is if cheika sticks to his test picks then Moore, Simmons, Horwill and Palu are not in form. At least Fardy has regained form.

McCalman is close but Higgs as outperformed him over the season.

Hooper was in the team until about halfway. Then Pcocok came back and had outstanding game after game. Gill also is in a purple patch. Hooper is NOT having as good as season as last year.

Exactly Most people are picking skelton, simmons as locks , palu as 8 and fardy/higgs as 6. So if you pick Skelton, Timani, Fardy and Higgs then Timani is better than Palu and Fardy is close to Simmons so the balalnce is fine in the lineout. But you gain a lot more at the ruck and in general play.

Timani can play eight with Carter and Fardy sharing lineouts, Higginbotham would be a great seven if put there, fast, extra lineout option and aggresive at contact!!

PK I love the pack of the Season team if that's an indication of your pick for the WB. Brownie's comments say it all. Its also good to see the Rebels pack finally appreciated as the gun Oz pack. Swap McMahon for Jones or Pardy and that helps your line out and adds more grunt. Timani and Skelton = Brutal 2nd row for playing in the NH. Facing your team and I would be looking for my cricket rib pads, anyone heard of road kill? Strangely although I love the piggies, the backline is a great Super XV group but a disaster in waiting for Internationals. We Roarers value your weekly articles and I can only say THANK you for your efforts.

All our jumpers get pinged for that. Simmons, Horwill, Carter are often penalised for pulling their opposition down. I don't think it's a Fardy thing necessarily.

There's no stat for breakdown speed, and that's where Hooper fails as a 7.

Fardy jumping in defensive positions always worries me a bit actually, he has a nasty habit of dragging the opposition jumper down with him and giving away a penalty.

Hello

The line out would be in real trouble if wither of those went off though

So, how exactly is Ben McCalman not mentioned once in your "form team"? Seems like the prognosticators are only watching Rebels games?

I think the maths must be flawed for Michael Hooper to be in none of these teams. With the exception of last week, he has been one of the best players out there every week this year! Effective tackles, turnovers, line breaks, assists, etc.

It does seem ridiculously unbalanced at first look, but with Higginbotham and Fardy in the backrow it's not really any less balanced than it would be with Skelton and Simmons at lock and Palu at 8. The starting pack looks like it will have to include either Simmons or Higgs though. Take either away and you're down to one fulltime jumper in Fardy (or zero if people persist with the Pocock/Hooper dual opensider idea).
