PRICHARD: Only one thing matters for Shaun Kenny-Dowall

By Greg Prichard / Expert

It took a bit longer to be reached than appeared necessary from the outside, but the decision to not play Shaun Kenny-Dowall for Sydney Roosters against the Warriors on Sunday was the only sensible one.

He has got a lot more to worry about than football at the moment and speculation about whether or not he will play next weekend is a waste of time as well – because it is not what is important right now.

All that matters at the moment is Kenny-Dowall’s first appearance in court on Thursday on domestic violence charges.

Ten charges: assault occasioning actual bodily harm, six counts of common assault, destroy or damage property, use carriage service to menace/harass/offend and stalking/intimidation – obviously equates to a very serious matter.

There will be no shortage of opinions about it, but the vast majority of them will be uneducated because we are yet to hear the evidence presented.

In the meantime, one can only hope the alleged victim, Jessica Peris, is getting all of the support she needs from those close to her. Presumably, that would be the case.

The Roosters will be looking after Kenny-Dowall’s welfare.

Kenny-Dowall’s playing career would surely be in tatters if the allegations were proven.

But should he be stood down from playing until the matter reaches its conclusion? That is the eternally difficult question.

On one hand it makes you feel uneasy to think someone could be allowed to continue playing with such serious charges hanging over his head.

But what if he was stood down for an extended period while a court case proceeded and the charges weren’t proven?

Who knows? Kenny-Dowall may not wish to play in at least the short term anyway.

I’m prepared to wait until his initial court appearance, where the reported indication is that he will plead not guilty, and see what the NRL and the Roosters decide to do then.

Chris Sandow’s situation at Parramatta is obviously vastly different to that of Kenny-Dowall at the Roosters, but again it’s a case of a player’s future being uncertain due to dramatic circumstances.

Sandow put in an awful performance for Parramatta in their loss to Canterbury on Friday night.

He appeared disinterested in the wake of having his application for a release from the remainder of his contract rejected on the basis that the Eels didn’t want to contribute a payout on top of what English club Warrington was offering Sandow to sign.

That is not surprising and probably understandable from Parramatta.

Eels coach Brad Arthur has since said the club would release Sandow as long as it didn’t have to pay him anything.

Sandow is reportedly unhappy about the non-payment of third-party deals, which brings us to a whole other story surrounding the repeated unreliability of such deals that deserves examination on its own.

Who knows what is going to happen with Sandow? He could be gone from the Eels within days, or even hours, or if he is still there he could play for them next weekend because dropping him to play for Wentworthville would apparently exacerbate the club’s second-tier salary cap situation.

It is an extraordinary state of affairs.

Sandow’s rant on Facebook, in which he said “I’m sick of some of these big mouth (expletive deleted) down here they think I’m one on my own should we run a muck or what I’m over the bulls**t” just added fuel to the fire.

Obviously, Parramatta and Sandow are better off apart. All we await now is to find out when and how the split finally happens.

Sometimes, it has seemed as if Sandow has been a convenient fall guy for the Eels. At other times, he has brought problems upon himself.

Whether England is the right place for him is debatable, but he’s a professional footballer. You go where the opportunities are.

Meanwhile, Roosters centre Michael Jennings is scheduled to appear in court today on charges of hindering police and offensive behaviour following that alleged late-night incident at a car park last month.

There’s never a dull moment in rugby league.

That is both pathetic and outrageous. I am all for deleting comments that are racist/homophobic/threatening etc etc but just because someone says something that doesn't fit the script, it doesn't mean their comment should be deleted.

I wish SKD and his personal life were not a topic on the blog. Ostensibly they were a happy couple 3 weeks ago but apparently not so. As people look at the history of things and what has occurred in the past as a guide. Based on that SKD should be given time to go through the process as he has shown nothing in the past to warrant otherwise.

Steveng, I wrote something similar on another post. SKD has been charged with, inter alia, stalking, using a telecommunications service to menace/harass, and assault with actual bodily harm (as I understand it is referred to in NSW). This, to me, bespeaks of the existence of text messages and photos/medical records (the final charge requiring the proof of an actual injury) where, as I understand it, the instances alleged date back some 12 months. Absolutely, one is innocent until proven guilty. I do not agree about this 'spoon feeding' thing. Each case turns on its own merits. Until further matters relating to the evidence are aired in open court, as they will be, there is little, in my view, to be gained by declaring that victims in general, exaggerate. That is unfair. I would imagine, in this circumstance, that the player has taken his agent and/or lawyer to the club with the written allegation at the very least, and there has been some discussions. He's off two weeks in a row - which may mean nothing or a lot. At the end of the day, best not call out the complainant until the details have been heard, whatever your own, respectfully, limited experience in this are may be.

I don't think anyone in the NRL will pick up Sandow. Why would Parramatta pay him if he goes to the UK. The third party deals need fixing by The NRL. Get the agreements standardised and enforceable. All that said I hope there are some interested people in Sandow's camp who will help him. He obviously has issues and they need fixing for his families sake and himself.

In my view, this is all you need to know. Sandow's first club was the Titans. Titans have a heap of money, and after they lost Sezer, need a half to mentor the very good K Elgey. Titans have no interest whatsoever in Sandow, who they could pick up, I would think, for a very small fraction of their DCE money. This is the club that signed D Taylor. 'Nuff said.

Hunt is the closest thing to Langer I have seen. Maybe it's the jersey colour, maybe it's the stature, maybe it's even Alfie barking at Hunt while he's on the field as to what's to do next. But I can see a lot of similarities. And Hunt is worth 10 Sandows.

Im with you Steve .. I spent 5 years in family court and if JC and his ill-informed PC brigader's who see the world through triple strength rose coloured glasses don't think that this kind of trumped up situation isn't common they are kidding themselves and are infact adding to the problem. There is a massive network or government and non government departments that take it upon themselves to destroy mens lives and instigate the situations to do so. To me this sets a very dangerous precedent if the NRL go overboard and they have to tread very carefully. I also think some of the prominent people having their say on this should shut their mouths and see what the final outcome is . Domestic violence is abhorrent but so is trying to destroy somebodys life by falsely accusing them.

And let's not forget that he spent some time in a rehab facility on Parra's dime as well. 3rd party money might not have eventuated, but Parra has given him a fair bit, too. Wouldn't hurt him so much to just walk away, which is clearly what both parties need. Unless he needs the doe to pay for a certain test drive mishap that happened on game day recently.

A MAGISTRATE has shown a national rugby union player ‘‘mercy’’ over threatening to bash the daughter of Olympic gold medallist Nova Peris-Kneebone. Magistrate Daynor Trigg said Jah Coe, 27, had been in a ‘‘highly charged, emotional state’’ after his girlfriend, Jessica Peris, 21, admitted her infidelity. ‘‘That would be distressing to anyone in a relationship,’’ Mr Trigg said. Coe pleaded guilty last week to smashing Ms Peris’ mobile phone and to two breaches of a domestic violence order over a five-month period. He escaped conviction and was discharged without penalty for property damage and one breach but was convicted and fined $500 for the final count — which Mr Trigg described as going ‘‘too far’’. The court was told Coe learnt of the alleged infidelity and confronted the other man at his Anula home last October. Prosecutor Marty Aust said Ms Peris showed up and an argument started before she tried to call her mother. ‘‘He smashed the phone on the ground,’’ he said. In March, Coe — who plays for the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team that participates in the Australian Rugby Union national championships — was assaulted by Ms Peris when she ‘‘struck’’ him with a power board. He then grabbed it off her and smashed it against a wall. Mr Trigg commended Coe for not retaliating by striking Ms Peris but said he shouldn’t have thrown it at the wall. ‘‘Ms Peris felt scared and intimidated by that action,’’ Mr Trigg said. The court heard that six days later — after Ms Peris played for the Waratahs in the women’s NTFL grand final — Coe threatened to ‘‘smash her face’’ during an argument. He then smashed a second phone when Ms Peris tried to call 000. Mr Trigg said: ‘‘That was the final straw

steveng, I read your story with much interest and I am pleased that justice prevailed. Having seen a similar case to yours I can understand how you feel. Physical abuse of women is one of the most cowardly and evil of all crimes and I can understand why women's support groups go in boots and all. It would help if they did not automatically brand all men guilty. Some men, as in your case, are innocent . I dare say that SKD will have the best of legal advice and as you say, if he is innocent he will be acquitted. If not, he will pay the appropriate penalty. We all love justice.

Take your misogynistic victim blaming elsewhere. You profess to believe in innocent until proven guilty whilst attempting to hang this young lady out to dry based on nothing more than an unrelated incident you had previously.

What allot of BS Jay C, 'you seem to know it all' on here, you have 'no idea what you are talking about' and I would suggest that you keep your righteousness to yourself! You talk allot of rubbish and philosophising and talking or making comments on 'hear say' and you twist my words to suite your rubbish comments that I didn't mean or insinuate at all, and I quote you "The worst part is that for a lot of young women in abusive relationships it must take a massive amount of courage to come forward" your comments are 'not good enough' and very inappropriate!" that is an absolute misquote of what I was saying or insinuating in any of my comments! Jay C, get this through your thick brain that "I do not condone domestic violence" Everybody has the right to be 'innocent before proven guilty' and your philosophy of and about 'domestic violence' has nothing to do with every case and is excessively exaggerated. Unless you can talk and/or make comment 'from personal experience' or have your exaggerated figures confirmed by some sort of research papers or figures. All I'm trying to say in this instance is this; 1st, is that the charge sheet that SKD has against him seems far too long and unbelievably excessive 2nd and I've said this before (from personal experience) is that women and for a lesser extent men (men don't put AVO's on women that often) exaggerate and inflate the charges that they put against the aggressor in these instances. Do your research and don't try and exaggerate just to make it sound good and be righteous!

And thankfully we live in a society which decided that we didn't want to be frothing mouth witch hunters and instead would rather see more wrong doers go free if that can with fewer innocents punished.

Alfie didn't need to be structured because Kevvie Walters gave the Broncos that quality. Turvey, to my mind, was one of the most structured players going around. he only ran the ball when there was a big gap and he could use his speed. Sandow doesn't even get in the same book as them, let alone the same paragraph.

As long as we don't get another ludicrous situation like South Sydney's Auva'a who stretched out the charges by getting adjournments until the season ended then pleaded guilty, Shouldn't be rewarded with a premiership ring because your lawyer can delay a case for 6-8 months. They should strip him of his premiership. You'd have to think the cops have copies of menacing text messages from SKD, based on the charges they laid. I'd reluctantly let him play under certain circumstances, even though it's not sending the right message. Bring on the case immediately, but if there's any adjournment or lengthy delay by SKD's legal team, rule him out because that's just a rort.

My big concern is this. The player turns out to be innocent of all charges and, in the meantime, he has been prevented from the opportunity of plying his trade and, potentially, playing in and winning a Grand Final. And I am concerned that his mental health would suffer too.
