With just four games remaining in the regular season, the Cowboys and Sharks are enjoying a purple patch of form.

Both have won four out of their last five, with the North Queenslanders sitting pretty in second spot, while the hosts have surged to fifth.

The Sharks won a tight last-start tussle with the Warriors in New Zealand, while the Cowboys did it tough against the Raiders but eventually prevailed 32-24.

Overall the Cowboys have won 15 matches this season with four losses, while the Sharks have an 11-8 record.

If the Cowboys have an Achilles Heel it is their starts – in several matches this season they have started poorly and had to rely on their talented spine to steer them home. In a competition as close as the NRL you just can’t do that, particularly in games with semi-final intensity, which Paul Green would have stressed to his charges.

Conversely, the Sharks’ greatest strength is their ability to grind out tough wins and frustrate teams into making errors – a game plan that works a treat against a team like the Cowboys.

The Sharks have a poor recent record against the visitors, but will gain plenty of confidence knowing that the last time the two sides met they came out on top.

It’s easy to say that for the Cowboys to win Johnathan Thurston needs to fire, but the Cowboys have so much more to them than that. Jake Granville, Lachlan Coote and Michael Morgan all take pressure off their chief playmaker, and add a depth to their attack that makes them formidable. Add that to their forward pack and you can see why this is a team that has made winning a habit.

The Sharks have found the balance between controlled aggression and attacking flamboyance in recent weeks, and it’s working for them. Ben Barba is the x-factor when he comes on and adds another dimension to their attack. Valentine Holmes is improving week by week, and is yet another off the Queensland production line.

The early stages of this match are likely to be played through the middle of the field – don’t be surprised if it’s a slugfest, played at a finals intensity.

Hopefully the backs will get a chance to come into it later, as there’s plenty of talent on both sides of the field.

Prediction
The Cowboys are vulnerable, and the Sharks at home are a tough assignment, but the visitors have just a bit more in attack and have the added motivation of reversing the result from earlier in the season.

Cowboys by 8.

Another very entertaining game.I think the Sharks are a better team without Fifita. You heading down to China Town to celebrate? Steer clear of the deep fried chicken feet.

Sometimes it happens, the good guys get the wins. What a great game of rugby league .That is what open rugby is all about, the pigs make the hard yards up the middle, the backs flying in unison. No Luke Lewis,no FFFFFFita.

It didn't cost them the game but can they charge the Sharks player. If they do, it will look bad for the referee and add to the stories about the Cowboys missing out again.

I am thinking that the last try was a 7th tackle try. Does any else think yhis also? I am sure I heard them call the 5th tackle, then they played the ball n were then tackled, which should have been the sixth tackle, sharks got up n played it n ran through n scored. I agree with your comment able Morgan being hit with a shoulder charge in goal. I am a Cowboy's supporter, they should never had got themselves in that position in the first place. Main thing is that we all see a good clean game, the officials doing there job n us seeing a good game of footy. Then all supporters win, even if my team lose. Keep up your great job. Thanks.

It was an entertaining second stanza - the Sharks scored first with a 90 metre special to Gordon, but the Cowboys got themselves back in it as was always on the cards. The Sharks managed to regain the momentum and scored late to seal the deal. Thurston had arguably his worst game of the season which doesn't bode well for Souths who will be waiting to take on the cowboys next week. The Sharks will host the Storm

The Sharks hold on for a 12 point victory massive win for them as it keeps them in touch with the top 4 while the Cowboys will be filthy they threw away a golden chance to storm into top spot on the ladder.

Exciting game. First time I've thought that the Sharks won't just be cannon fodder in the finals. They looked good.

Massive kick from Thurston who nails it from the side line Sharks 24 Cowboys 18 And Gallen needs to watch himself - he should be in the bin for those comments he's just directed to the ref when he accused him of not reffing evenly
