DIY Player Ratings: Rugby World Cup final - the results

By Patrick Effeney / Editor

The Rugby World Cup has been played and won, and New Zealand came away with the spoils.

Victory in consecutive Rugby World Cups is a fitting tribute for this All Blacks team, and the Wallabies deserved their second position, after enjoying a wonderful tournament.

It was a terrific game of rugby, with New Zealand running out 17-point winners. A big margin, sure, and in the end not necessarily reflective of the scare Australia gave the champions.

Mumm cost us the RWC. That must be worth a bonus point?

Rating the coaches: According to my observation Cheika should never have been considered for Coach of the year and I believe in the RWC tournament committee has been sloppy and phlegmatic. If you critique all the relevant coaching teams, how would you rate EJ with the Japan Blossoms? What about the sterling work achieved by the Arg coach Daniel Hourcade, Argentina now have to be counted among the big boys and that don’t happen quickly. If you consider the financial resources, player numbers and lack of adequate facilities in Georgia, Romania and Tonga and the mountain such minnow organizations need to climb just to play with the big boys. Perhaps it may have been prudent to recognize one of these coaches, as they all played above their weight. Cheika as coach of the year, don’t make me laugh, he never had to climb a mountain. The Australia ARU has all the above in abundance, what the Wallabies were missing, was discipline, commitment, belief and someone to recognize how best to optimize and competent the different skill sets. If you contemplate how Eden Park shattered his dream earlier in the year. A man of his ability would have instantly understood the skill level required to beat the best in the world. He never had to endure the dilemma some of the minnow nations struggled with, such as the lack of equipment, sponsors, appropriate administration and experienced staff. If you reflect on their support base who did their teams proud during the tournament, realizing they were never going to be in the play-offs. They all played attractive rugby, with their only desire to win a match and strut their stuff against a recognized nation. Rugby was the winner. Perhaps Steve Hansen should have received that award, as he definitely displayed an aptitude, capabilities and a strategy that far exceeded Cheika and Larkham in the final?

To be reflective of the true dominance of New Zealand the margin should have been 25 points

from my extremely limited experience... box kicks, a la genia-foley on the weekend is a combo of the outside player (intended recipient) and halfback calling it.. generally though it is the outside player calling for it as they normally have a much better line of view of the space behind and also know which person they will be challenging against and therefore decide on their chances of success.. ie if a slow forward is caught hanging out on the wing defending and no covering player etc the exception to this is when attacking team is in their own 22 and it is used as safety measure of clearing out of the danger area..

I'd say the reason Douglas got a 5 is that he did nothing of note in a rather short period of time. It's hard to mark a bloke up or down when he's not there for too long. That said, I'd have had him a 4... Mumm? Can't see how he outpointed Simmons. Kepu dropping Douglas? It's a tough one, given he did cop a pretty decent knee in the shoulder from Whitelock (not claiming there was anything malicious in that, Whitelock was chasing the ball, but it's not easy to hold a bloke over your head when you get blindsided). Back to Douglas... He's now gone for most of the S15. So, big win for the Reds there... And the ARU. Just means that, regardless of what people say, the provincial rubbish will still be round next year, because he won't raelly have worn the Reds jersey, and there's no reason to think that the team will win, so there's less reason for his performances to be notable.

Genia dropped the ball at the base of the ruck because the ball was kicked out of his hands by an off his feet Wallaby. Retallick blocked the first box kick- Genia had no other viable options. When Genia box kicked for Foley, Kuridrani scored. Luckily Foley, a smart 7's player, read the situation and was first to the well judged kick; AAC on the other hand never seems to be able to contest bix kicks- they always seem to surprise him.

The charged down box kick was made up by the kick through that created Kuridrani's try. The knock on? Should've been a penalty, DC was miles offside up the side of the ruck... That said, I don't think he should've gotten more than 6, and I don't see how any of our attacking players could get big points. We played soooo deep in attack. And our tight five were too slow to secure our own ball. Again, too deep.

Genia lucky to get 6.4. Didn't he get one kicked charged down and make a knock on picking up from a ruck on the first 20 minutes? Didn't do much else.

About time ! What have you been doing all week, cycling around Sydney ! Good job everybody on the ratings , pretty spot on in my book. My only issue is Drew Mitchell got a 6, above the pass mark, yet he fumbled 3 times which could of made the game a lot more interesting had he not ! I am a fan of Drew but his game warranted a 4 !

Kepu gives away penalties for high tackles and drops Kane Douglas causing Kane's injury and Mumm drops the ball in contact and leaves the gap for NM-S's try and they both score higher than Rob Simmons who wins the line-outs including the one leading to the Wallaby maul try, doesn't drop the ball in contact, and makes key tackles.

There is much to be said of the wisdom of the crowd. I also think that the most selected was the more accurate score. Takes out the lunatic fringe and better represents the majority. The results show that there wasn't really anywhere that Oz featured. They fought back on courage alone because the form sheet shows them behind elsewhere. For as many questions were answered at this world cup, better questions are asked yet again for us next year. There is much to look forward to. Great service from The Roar. Thank you Patrick.
