Richardson leaves NRL, set to return to Bunnies

By News / Wire

Shane Richardson will depart his post as head of game strategy and development at the NRL to return to South Sydney.

Less than a year after resigning from the Rabbitohs to join the NRL, Richardson has confirmed he will shift back to the club in the newly created role of general manager.

“I really enjoyed the experience of working at NRL headquarters but this new role – and its direct involvement with the players and the game – is what I want to do next in life,” he said in a NRL statement.

“I am looking forward to moving from a strategic role back to the coal face.”

In his short time with the NRL, Richardson was responsible for drafting the game’s elite pathway blueprint, which was released in December.

While it was endorsed by the ARL Commission (ARLC), the move to shift the current NSW and QLD Cups to a Platinum League, which would potentially merge a number of NRL clubs at a second-tier level, was slammed by the NSW Rugby League.

Richardson was forced to defend the move at the time.

However, ARLC chairman John Grant says it is the success of the blueprint which allows Richardson to move back to the Rabbitohs.

“He has completed the strategy and has been offered a long-term role at Souths so this is the logical time to make the change,” he said in the statement.

“His experience at the NRL has given him a unique insight into the game that he did not have before and he leaves on the best of terms.”

Richardson’s role at the Rabbitohs will include overseeing player retention, recruitment, pathways and operations.

“Shane is arguably the most-experienced football brain in the country,” Rabbitohs CEO John Lee said in a club statement.

“He has a wonderful understanding of the football side of the business and a deep appreciation of what our club stands for, having been part of the organisation for over a decade.”

The transition is expected to take place in the next 60 days.

They don't samtwocan?? I seem to remember Ian Schubert doing the audits for the salary cap. Just before the Roosters team of the century player stepped down from his role, the Roosters were able to sign: SBW, Jennings, Maloney. Resign Pearce, Heargraves, Cordner, Guerra, Friend and Aubosson to name a few all in the same season. They were able to do this by releasing Braith Anasta, Mose Masoe and Frank Nuasala. those boys must have been on $2.5 million each to shed enough money for those signings and resignings. Not to mention the every year for the past 6 years the audits come out and Roosters have been found to be over the salary cap $100,000 or more. Amazingly, swept away under the carpets. The rorters are worse cheats than the storm. And yes samtwocan, the NRL allows it. This shows favour.

Eels can sign Jennings because they lost a ridiculously overpaid Hoppa. Brisbane only paid less than 1 club being the dragons. The deal is about the same as what he was on at the Titans if you include TPAs and about the same as what Souths offered. Part of the reasoning was that he wants to play rep and believes Bennett is the best pathway for him over roadkill. Let's face it apart from Inglis and Teo the Rabbitohs have had it rough when it comes to origin selections. It's a mystery how McQueen was in the system for so long. Now I don't see many potential origin players at all. Reynolds maybe if there are injuries. Having said that though I believe Brisbane have only had a total of 3 NSW origin players. One of which was a origin player before he went to Brisbane. This isn't really surprising since Brisbane focus more on QLD and NZ talent and only tend to dip into NSW to fill a hole, but interesting nonetheless. Thinking about it I think both squads have had the same number of NSW reps in the last 10 years. Wallace from the Broncos and Merritt from Souths. Did Sutton play off the bench once or was he only 18th man?

The problem with the Rorters and RTS was very simple, they wanted him to play Fullback on a Wingers wage. It is as simple as that, they didn't even bother to offer him anywhere near the Warriors offer of $800k. They offered him only $450k. SO, what would you do?

A conspiracy theory is an explanatory or speculative hypothesis suggesting that two or more persons or an organization have conspired to cause or cover-up, through secret planning and deliberate action, an event or situation typically regarded as illegal or harmful. Since the mid-1960s, the phrase has denoted explanations that invoke conspiracies without warrant, often producing hypotheses that contradict the prevailing understanding of historical events or simple facts: The JFK Assassination 9/11 Cover-Up Area 51 and the Aliens Paul Is Dead Secret Societies Control the World The Moon Landings Were Faked Jesus and Mary Magdalene Holocaust Revisionism The CIA and AIDS The Reptilian Elite and Souths signing a player and being over the salary cap? And no one even metioned another administrator who favours International dev. gone? The Lizards are in charge! :-)

Richardson new what to expect in his new position and hardly needed pushing when asked so Its surprising he's leaving halfway through the process that he'd started. I suspect his paper and performance was disappointing and therefore as a result was asked to leave. I'm surprised that after a year of work and consultation with all stakeholders his paper inadequate as it is still requires consultation etc etc. what was he doing in all that time to warrant the high salary? Waist.

And the Roosters, in turn, will be supplementing Jennings contract, as he like Copley was TOLD to move on also!

Suggest you read the NRL's website comments ,re Richardson. As usual the News Ltd mob,put their own interpretation on everything, and as usual get it wrong. Not the first time the NRL have had to publicly correct News Ltd on falsehoods.

I'm a Souths man, the Roosters didn't shed Tauvasa Sheck he just left them to go home, now forget all the Souths Roosters crap & tell me how the Broncos signed Roberts for cheap, how has the salary cap auditors approved him for cheap, the Broncos shed 1 player who was on crap money, also how do the Eels sign a guy who was reportedly on $600,000 a season.

Copley would be cheap in 2016 with the Broncos covering most of his salary.

If you're interested in the facts and not just Media rubbish, Sam Burgess is on $500k under the CAP and about $400k worth of 3rd Party deals. John Lee even said as much. His QUOTE was, "these figures of Sam being on $1.5M is wide of the mark, it is below and closer to $1M"

The Rorters have also signed: 2016 Gains: Pakisonasi Afu (2017), Joe Burgess (Wigan Warriors, 2018), Dale Copley (Brisbane Broncos, 2018), Mitchell Frei (2016), Ian Henderson (Catalan Dragons, 2016), Ryan Matterson (Parramatta Eels, 2017), Jayden Nikorima (Brisbane Broncos, 2018) Joe Burgess, Dale Copley and Jayden Nikorima, were NOT cheap! They also upgraded Blake Ferguson, Aiden Guerra, SKD, Latrell Mitchell (8 clubs were chasing him), Dylan Nappa, Daniel Tupou and Jared Waerea-Hargraves. NONE of these would have come CHEAP!

Thing is that Qld doesn't operate the same way as NSW, Broncos have, Redcliffe, Wynnum Manly, Central Comets, Ipswich & Souths Logan as their feeder clubs, Cowboys have Mackay Cutters, Townsville Blackhawks & Northern Pride as their feeder Clubs, Titans have Burleigh Bears & Tweed Head Seagulls as their feeder clubs & lastly Melbourne Storm have East Tigers & Sunshine Coast as their feeder clubs so you have to consider both situations which Richardson has.

One thing for sure, pie sales in the Southern areas around Redfern ,will be doing a roaring trade.. i look on the brighter side. The NRL admin don't have to outlay a $500,000 plus pa salary ,and this money can or should be be better utilised by them. He prepared a whole of game paper, understand many of the recommendations will be taken up by the NRL admin. Some of which we agree with others not so.Never get everyone to agree on any subject matter, just look at the Roar. His move is hardly the end of the world.Execs in many organisations these days .chop and change ,no position like the 50s,60s and 70s is for life.People go to where they either will earn more bikkies or where they feel more comfortable,or simply where they enjoy the task at hand.

Too right Brendan....these conspiracy theories are just priceless. Burgess was always going to return to Souths if the RU gig didn't work out.....it was actually one of the conditions of his release that the Rabbits would have first crack at him. Then we get all these insane assertions that Richardson was doing dodgy deals in the UK to get him back for Souths. I agree with you.....I've never seen any other player require a club to lose three rep players (and that's not even including shedding Luke and Glenn Stewart last year) just so they can be under the cap. None of these conspiracy theorists can explain these gaping wholes in their arguments of favouritism towards Souths.

1.5 Million? Where did you pluck that number from? The Telecrap? Dont worry about Souths making the 8, worry about your own club :)

The third grade still exists. Look up the Ron Massey Cup. Your proposal is all well and good, but it doesn't provide any streamlined development between the different states or support areas that have high juniors but no NRL team and vice versa.

Through hoops ?? Yes, 1.5 million of them actually. Your million dollar marquee player wears the number 1 jersey, Burgess is just another player. I wouldn't worry about the Roosters, I would be worrying about making the 8.

Reckon that is close to the mark, he ruled with an fist at Souths and then goes to the myriad of Management that is the NRL. Not surprised he is back in Clubland.
