Waratahs vs Reds highlights: Waratahs hold on for bonus-point win

By Brent Ford / Roar Guru

Match result:

In a bizarre night, the Waratahs dominated the first half before they were nullified in the second, ultimately recording a 30-10 win over the Reds.

REPORT: TAHS PUT MORE PRESSURE ON REDS

It was almost as though the Waratahs had an eye towards next week. One positive for the Reds is their scrum looks to be a strength.

The Waratahs will look to refocus next weekend for a trip to Canberra against the Brumbies, while the Reds will return home to face the Force.

Kurtley Beale did well in the flyhalf spot including an awesome try-saving tackle, Israel Folau looks to be over his ankle injury, and Nick Frisby and Karmichael Hunt were solid for the Reds.

Final score
NSW Waratahs 30 defeat Queensland Reds 10

Match Preview:

The first Australian rivalry for 2016 is set to be played between the Waratahs and Reds, in what should be an awesome game to kick off the seasons. Join The Roar from 7:40pm (AEDT) for commentary and live updates.

The Waratahs were unable to defend their title last year, as the Highlanders rolled them on their own turf.

The Tahs have won ten of their last 12 matches against fellow Australian teams, and not since Round 5, 2014, have they been beaten by an Australian team that wasn’t the Force (who knew!).

The Reds’ have won four of their last 11 games against Australian opponents, with no losing bonus points given.

You get the feeling Samu Kerevi will need to be at the peak of his powers for the Reds to have any chance tonight.

Or perhaps they could win this game at the lineouts, where they had the highest success rate of any team last year, at 91 per cent.

Israel Folau should have a big impact tonight, as the Wallaby wasn’t at his best during the World Cup. Despite not scoring as often as we may have thought in Super Rugby last year, he still led a ton of stats, making the most carries (231), metres (1677) and offloads (38).

James Slipper is a notable absentee for the Reds, but Eto Nabuli has been named to make his debut on the wing. Jake McIntyre will be the starting flyhalf, with Nick Frisby the scrumhalf in a vastly different pairing to previous seasons.

Kurtley Beale will start at flyhalf for the Waratahs, and former Crusader Zac Guilford starts on the wing as he attempts to rebuild his career. Young David Horwitz starts in the centres, while former NRL winger Reece Robinson will be hoping to get his chance as he starts on the bench.

Prediction
The Waratahs will be too good at home.

Waratahs by 10.

Well, well, well. I just watched the game. Very surprised. Short word in Tahs. Nice win. But even more things to work on than the Reds. The "well oiled" team should have put 50 on this round 1 Reds team. 10/10 Rob Horne and Hoops for the pressure on the Reds attack. KB for the try saver and using the space when he had it. CFS should be dropped. I do wonder how Junior Laloifi would have fared in that scenario. Or Cam Magnay Onto the Reds. Where as in previous two years RG was in charge, the Reds were crushed and spat out by 35'. There was no such thing here. As the game progressed, they slowed, then stopped Tahs forwards from advancing, and picked them off. I have never seen that in any of RG's SR tenure. Many things to work on, in particular phase play against fast defence: - Jake Mc's shuffle ball. Some mindless / slow decisions there. - If hes unable to fire up his backs, let Greene do it - At first the pack had no answer to the Tah line defence. But they got better. Frisby Aussie scrummie of the round. He has to pickup the pace a bit when passing, and pass more accurately. But I think he clearly outplayed Phipps, who also played well. Reds should have easily scored 2 more tries if they had more polish. I think RG used the word cohesion. Good start RG in any case. I like Simmo as Captain. Look forward to next week

Best scrum coach, yes. Lineout was not dominant just functional, it's not a weakness but it isn't a strength either. Maul formation off lineout is loose and impotent which is surprising considering our scrum - they obviously have the cattle for a good maul. Our breakdown work is way off pace too. Liam gill injured is notable in that respect but he can't be everywhere even when fit.

Couldn't agree more JH. Very little commentary about the Reds' completely dominant seven man scrum - one tight head and at least three penalties. Waratah's were good and deserved their victory, but he yellow card that brought about uncontested scrubs was a disgrace to the game. The one aspect of the game that they dominated was unrewarded and gifted the Tahs a bonus point. Reds need to do much more in attack, but Frisby, McIntyre and Kerevi showed enough promise for some rewards this year.

As a lifelong Reds fan I must register my disgust at the performance of the Queensland Rugby Union team tonight, The majority of them should hand their wages back, as it was a long way short of an acceptable professional standard. For starters the team is patently not fit enough. They were blowing and had their heads down early. Symptomatic of a poor attitude and unacceptable lack of application. IMO only Holmes, Frisby and Mcintyre measured up to the high standards expected of the Queensland jersey. I would signal out Nabuli and Neville for their pathetic performances and dreadful attitudes. In all seriousness is there any way they could be told to leave tomorrow? Do not agree with the praise for Hunt that others offer - totally ineffectual. For a schoolboy champion and Kangaroo (both sadly many many years ago) an uninspiring performance. This display alone merits Graham's resignation or dismissal.

Brumbies look clearly the best in Oz right now, both on paper and on the field.

Not how I saw it. 1st - reds initial shove, tahs counter and pinged for deliberate wheel 2nd - didn't move an inch for 5 mins, then tahs pinged for collapse 3rd - tahs slightly dominant, look like they might have stolen it, goes down - if Gardner was consistent it should have been penalty tahs 4th - reds initial shove, tahs counter, reds 3 collapses first, somehow tahs pinged and sin binned There was not one of those scrums where the reds shoved the tahs back more than a couple of feet. How can a ref be convinced a try would probably have been scored in those circumstances?

Reds had 58,738 members in 2014, the first year of RG when people were still optimistic after 3 years straight of finals footy. After 2 years of headless chooks and nearly everyone with finals experience gone the Reds are sitting on 25,179 members for 2016. Honestly I don't imagine that number improving much throughout the year. That is an absolute ballsload of lost money, It boggles my mind that the head honchos can turn a blind eye to that.

There were 4 scrums before it went uncontested. Reds clearly dominant in 3 of the them and received penalties, the third penalty lead to the yellow card. The other was a reset.

Tell me, which of those scrums at the end were the reds going forward at the time the penalty was given? I thought Gardner was clueless at the end.

Well as a Reds fan, I can't help but feel that was a depressing sign of things to come. Not at all impressed with Jake Mac's first proper crack at filling Quade's boots. Nick Frisby's game was a highlight - I'm obviously biased but I do think he has the skillset to fill the Wallabies #9 jersey - as was the surprisingly solid game from Eto Nabuli. For the Tahs, I thought Beale was impressively composed at 10, and the new 12 (Horwitz? Horowitz?) looks like quality. The uncontested scrums were VERY fortuitous for the Tahs in terms of the bonus point.

Well done, QRU. Classic shoot-foot: 1. WIn Title. 2. Appoint "mate" of the management, with 28% win record. 3. Spend next year winning 28% of games, lose experienced players who are disenchanted. 4. Spend following year winning 28% of games, lose even more experienced players, with leftovers desperate for exit. 5. Despite howls of complaints from everyone who's ever watched a game of rugby, reappoint 28% winning coach, lose all but rump of remaining experienced players...and start the 2016 Super Rugby season. I've had a gutful of these clowns. Having attended most home games for the past 7 or 8 years, I simply couldn't be bothered anymore. I feel so sorry for the players, who have tried their best despite the negligent incompetence of management.

Cheers mate. Thought Beale & Hooper were the Tahs best. Newcomers Holloway, Horwitz and Lousi all played very well, but gee they really need to work on those scrums! Frisby and Hunt both had excellent games - their best at Super Rugby level, while I thought Neville, Tui and the front row were also quality, and Nabuli showed a lot of promise in his few touches. Need to give special mention to Schatz too. He often cops a lot of stick but works tirelessly and was decent tonight. The biggest problem for the Reds is not so much their personel but their lack of creativity on attack. All one out runners who couldn't make the gain line saw them just go backwards backwards backwards.

The Reds just seemed to be playing with very little structure and even less urgency. They gave me the impression that they weren't expecting to break the Waratahs defensive line. Whereas on Friday night whenever the Brumbies had a line break there was at least two supporting players right behind it, whenever the Reds broke the line the ball carrier would run down the field while the rest of the Reds players were still on there own side of the Waratahs defence (many of them walking with hands on hips). What did they do for off season fitness training?
