Dominant Dogs ease past Sea Eagles in NRL

By James MacSmith / Roar Guru

It was meant to be a new dawn for Manly, but instead a slimmed down Canterbury showed they would again be a force under Des Hasler in 2016.

The Bulldogs made light work of the Sea Eagles 28-6 at Brookvale Oval on Friday night in the second match of the NRL’s opening round before 16,512 fans.

The visitors’ leaner forward pack dominated new-look Manly up front for much of the opening stanza, helping them to open up a 22-0 lead at the break courtesy of tries to Sam Perrett, Will Hopoate, Sam Kasiano and Josh Morris.

Morris’ try was his 100th four-pointer in his 194th first-grade game. He joined twin Brett and father Steve in scoring more than 100 top-grade tries.

In Trent Barrett’s first outing as coach since Geoff Toovey’s unpopular sacking, Manly failed to live up to the hype of their off-season signing spree that included Nate Myles, Martin Taupau and Dylan Walker. They were their own worst enemies at times, failing to find touch after penalties and dropping simple passes.

The Dogs were a step or three above in comparison and were very enterprising at times as halves Moses Mbye and Josh Reynolds, who earned two try assists, managed to spark their attack far more than Daly Cherry-Evans and Walker.

Manly were finally on the scoreboard in the 65th minute through Jorge Taufua, before Curtis Rona replied in the 73rd minute to send the Brookvale faithful streaming for the exits.

Many experts have predicted the Dogs to miss the eight this year, but coach Hasler has managed to stay ahead of the curve and correctly read the changes to a quicker game as a result of the reduced interchange rule. In contrast, Barrett has a long week ahead of him before Manly’s second-round clash on Monday week with Wests Tigers.

Steve Matai was put on report for a 29th-minute high tackle on Aiden Tolman, while Taupau was also reported for a first-half shoulder charge.

Dogs centre Chase Stanley suffered a leg injury, and hooker Michael Lichaa left the field with 15 minutes left with a knee injury.

Canterbury next play Penrith away on Thursday.

The win is Canterbury’s fifth straight over Manly.

No one seems to want to give a rap to the ever reliable Sammy Perrett. Forever flying under the radar, he comes up with massive tackles when most needed, and generally gets the team on the front foot when they're going backwards. In other words, he's great at cleaning up other peoples messes. They should nick-name him Mum.

JB and TB. Wow , It's like discovering Rugby League for the very first time. I feel ashamed that I doubted Des and his merry men, especially Mbye. Would be great to see Moses maintain that % for the season. I could feel the team spirit coming through the screen. The absence of Brett and Michael is a tremendous blow but after last night I know they will cover. I do not want to think of finishing position, just let it happen and enjoy the ride.

It feels good to have a couple of the off season concerns maybe not put to bed but deferred for now. Des has shown his smarts here with how he's got the team playing. We've got Penrith next Thursday. It's going to be tough for them to prepare after playing in 40 degree heat today and with a five day turnaround.

It's crazy to think Turbo is only 19. He looks so comfortable at NRL level. Yeah I remember last year. Broncos for the spoon. And the Rabbitohs to go through the season undefeated! Still, I'd much rather be in your shoes this morning TB. Dessie had the team tuned to the minute. Kasiano looked like an Adonis. And Graham just keeps proving to be one of the best from rowers to ever play the game. Mbye and Reynolds played very well too. Good signs.

There were plenty of encouraging signs eJ despite an overall poor performance. It's going to be great to watch how Turbo develops over the next couple of years. I can't help but think back to last year when the Roar post game wrap up had plenty of punters saying the Broncos were going to get the spoon. Anyone making sweeping statements about any teams chances, positive or negative, should do so very carefully.

Very disappointing that even with a glut of possession in the second half they couldn't score more points. The attack looked predictable and pedestrian. Dogs definitely had it wrapped up at half time and more than deserved their win. They wouldn't have dreamt of the Manly assistance they got in the first forty. Having said that they were professional enough to take advantage of it. Looks like Barret will need to revisit his playbook in a hurry

Early days but if Manly play like that too often they'll be on the end of multiple hidings. Always disappointed to hear about a "wake up" call in Rd 1. There may have been a little bit of complacency after ok trial form, and paper talk, but I can never understand that. Still it was a good hit out. I saw enough to know the team will be thereabouts by year's end. Stewart back is a must. The backline was disjointed without him calling the shots, and chiming in. Turbo on the wing instead of Willame and Manly are a lot closer by full-time last night. Blake Leary could be pushing for a starting spot, but I'd also like to see Lawrence on the bench. POD with his speed and strength. Mateo/Buhrer were also missed. The forwards will hopefully go away after being dominated and regroup. 10 new faces in the 17 were never going to click immediately. Dogs looked fit, and fired accordingly. Simple rolling gameplan, that then created space on the outside. Good win by them.

Awesome game by the Dogs. Shock and Awe is what they brought to Brookvale. If they continue this way they'll be a top 4 team for sure. The big men in the Dogs team looks extremely fit and they are also very skillful, especially Graham and Kasiano. Kasiano looks to be a game breaker whenever he comes on and the interchange changes didn't affect them one bit. Manly look like they still have a lot to work on, their were smatterings of individuality but they didn't threaten as a team. Koroisau looks good at hooker, Walker needs some work but he has the skills. Overall they had a poor night with their handling which cost them any chance of getting close.

Canterbury played OK but Manly were pathetic, their defense was rubbish. Like I said before Manly being touted as a premiership chance is way off the mark and the so called "experts" who talked them up should find another sport to commentate on.

I didn't realise that Parcells grandfather was Doug Parcell. Good pedigree for a Hooker

Once Manly changed hookers I thouvht their attack improved and that is with Parcell not looking at his best.

As the 'million dollar man' DCE really shouldn't be failing to find touch. I know it's only one error in the context of a game but when you're getting the big bucks and leading the team you need to do better, especially in the first game.

Brilliant start to the season. How good is it to see Williams running onto the ball? He must be up for contract renewal - haha. Not sure that he made any line breaks but looked dangerous with every touch. Dogs forwards just ran hard in the first 80 metres and then put the passing game on in the Manly 20 where it was very effective. The slimmed down Kasiano looked awesome. Mbye kicked well and controlled the game. Reynolds is as good as any player in the comp at getting to commit the outside defender and create space for his outside men. Jackson was great. He is so often the guy that makes the desperate tackle, takes the first hit up, comes up with the loose ball. Hopoate and Lichaa both looked sharp. Hopefully Lichaa is alright for next week. Reports out of the trials were that his running game was working and it looked that way last night. I didn't think Walker was too bad at 6 last night. He took the ball to the line well - although a couple of times he looked like he wasn't sure what he was doing and went in circles. He'll work it out. Back row is Manly's problem. Brown and Green don't go well together and Buehrer and Symonds are not much better. Long way to go but good start.

Dogs looked very good last night. Their slimmed down forwards were very potent and Mbye and Reynolds played well off the back of the pack. So that answered the two bigs questions about the Dogs' chances in 2016. They'll be in the mix sure enough. Lot of people tipping instance success for Manly were reminded that it's a team game. Their cohesion can only improve, but I'll be interested to see how well a few individuals go like Myles (he looked like the plodder he was with the Titans), and while their first choice backline is very good, I wonder how many games they will play uninterrupted with injuries (Snake & others are getting older) and suspension (Matai is good for a few games on the sideline suspended every season). Plus bedding down a novice 5/8.

Boo hoo hoo. But we Manly supporters have been living the dream. The reality is that its going to take a lot more for us to threaten this comp this year. A lot of work to be done. Some good talent there. Barrett learned some lessons about certain players. Next effort should be an improvement.
