NRL announce Todd Greenberg as new CEO

By The Roar / Editor

Todd Greenberg has officially been announced as the new CEO of the NRL, some five months after Dave Smith announced his retirement from the role.

Greenberg, who was head of football under Smith, beat a field of candidates said to include Canterbury Bulldogs CEO Raelene Castle, Warriors boss and former NRL COO Jim Doyle, Gold Coast chief executive Graham Annesley, and Harvey Norman CEO Katie Page.

The final two are understood to have been Greenberg and Accor Hotels boss Simon Grath.

Ultimately though, the man touted as favourite since the search for a new head honcho began has landed the role.

“I’m pleased to announce that the ARL Commission unanimously decided to annouce Todd Greenberg as its new CEO,” ARL chairman John Grant said at the official announcement from Rugby League Central.

“By any measure Todd was a standout candidate.”

Grant said he wanted three things – someone with CEO experience, a good communicator, and someone who can remain calm under pressure, and that “Todd not only ticked the boxes, he nailed them.”

“My goal will be to unite the game at every level because, working together, there is no limit to the potential for rugby league which can continue to thrive and grow,” said Greenberg.

“I have a genuine love of this game and I intend to continue to use my experience to build on the steps we have taken over the last two and a half years. We intend to deliver the best possible outcomes for fans, the clubs, the state leagues and the players.”

Throughout the process of searching for a new NRL CEO, Greenberg has kept his cards close to his chest.

Less than a month ago, at the launch of the NRL Bunker, Greenberg was asked about when the game would have a new CEO, to which he replied, “[The ARL Commission have] run a very thorough process, it’s not appropriate for me to comment on the process, other than to say I’ve got great faith they’ll make the right decision, and they’ll have my support.”

When pressed as to whether he was interested in the role, Greenberg said, “I don’t think it’s worthwhile me commenting on it. I haven’t commented on it for the last four months and I don’t intend to comment on it at the moment, I think that’s inappropriate.

“The decisions they’ll make, they’ll make in the right time.”

Today, it’s safe to say Greenberg believes they’ve made the right decision.

Mitsubishi electric renewed their sponsorship about 7 months before greenberg arrived and left 5 months after he took over, SBW also walked out 5 months into his reign and after holding talks with greenberg to upgrade his contract/stay The Global financial crisis hit that year, greenberg couldnt find a replacement major sponsor in that climate so he blamed the situation on the previous administrations failings to make himself look better and it worked because you still believe his fiction

I'm not whining about Smith. I think he did a great job. My point is that the same very people who whined about Smith are lauding Greenberg, as though he had nothing to do with the Smith administration.

Really good points crosscoder. The Bulldogs were a mess when he took over. Constant controversies and scandals, dissatisfied playing group, star players leaving, sponsors leaving. You'll recall in about 08 or 09 the Dogs had no jersey sponsor and they couldn't even give it away for free because charities didn't want to be associated with the Bulldogs brand. He struck the Camp Quality deal and they basically got a year of free sponsorship. Now people complain that the Bulldogs have an unfair advantage attracting sponsors and third parties. That's all Greenberg. He's also overseen the Bulldogs high performance training facility as well as the NRL initiatives you've mentioned. As for bias to the Bulldogs, I guess that's possible but the proof will be in the pudding. What I would say is that he's a professional administrator not a fan. I work for an insurance broker and deal with insurance companies that I've worked for previously. I don't give them special treatment. My goal is to do my job the best I can and get the best result for my clients. Millions of people do that every day.

I look at it this way,he has his flaws made the odd stuff up,but he dragged the Bulldogs from the proverbial gutter into a club worthy of its current status .He brought in the shot clock and bunker, the latter apparently many within the game were not that keen, now they sing about it . Ironic the Dogs are complaining about the decision last night, made by the bunker. The players and club officials are on side with him,if he can unify the game game get more attending and playing,he'll get my vote.TBH think he will be pro expansion. I still laugh at those who complain the ARLC looked outside in addition to within the ranks for the position.1) You have a look at what is on offer ,rather than a limited offering 2) It avoids the perception of jobs for the boys. It took five months, big deal, thats five months CEO salary saved, and five months looking thoroughly at who was available and what they had to offer. If Greenberg gets the job done to everyone's satisfaction 5 months will seem irrelevant. As to Greenberg advising Smith where TWAS( a union man) was whining about Smith being out of touch ,he got Smith on side re the bunker a decent plus. And I believe got Smith involved in Govt lobbying ,something the anaemic admin under Gallop couldn't do. Smith actually went out to the bush at times to get a feel on their problems, something Gallop rarely did. As if the Telecrap would know the actual salary available for the applicants and whether or not a performance bonus was also offered. This mob complained the whole process was hush hush, yet they provide so called info LOL.Honesty and reality at times are strangers for that organisation. From a football admin perspective and his experience in that field,he(Greenberg) is miles ahead of Whittakerr,Moffett,Gallop and Smith. He may turn out to be a disaster or the best thing since bikinis, time will tell. I f he plays favourites with the Dogs then he'll lose me,but I doubt it.

Greenberg verdict - Im prepared to give the bloke 2 yrs before I fully judge him. I dont expect great things from him, I think he is only a modest bloke. I dont expect any radical changes. I kinda expect unremarkable things from him.

100% sarcasm. But I'm not claiming it as satire and it's actually poking fun at my own club not everyone and everything involved in the game.

“My goal will be to unite the game at every level because, working together, there is no limit to the potential for rugby league which can continue to thrive and grow,” said Greenberg. Unite the game at every level........................things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Not sure what his plans are, or how he intends to achieve any part of this very broad statement. Is he planning to bring back three grades of football on a Sunday arvo? Sounds like nothing more than political spin to me
