NRL may ask more Sydney based clubs to move matches

By News / Wire

The Cronulla Sharks and Manly Sea-Eagles could be among clubs forced to move games to Allianz Stadium for the NRL to receive their proposed venue upgrade package from the NSW Government.

ARL Commission chairman John Grant will meet with representatives from the clubs on Wednesday as the NRL look to meet a 65-game commitment at Sydney’s major stadiums to ensure a $1.6 billion upgrade package for Pirtek, ANZ and Allianz Stadium, according to Fairfax Media.

Given Parramatta, Canterbury, South Sydney and the Sydney Roosters all use the stadiums as their home grounds, 23 games will need to be shared between the Wests Tigers, St George Illawarra, Penrith, the Sharks and the Sea Eagles.

The Tigers and Dragons currently each play four games a year between the stadiums, however the NRL – who provide financial assistance to both clubs – may ask them to up that figure to eight in order to help secure the funding.

It is understood the league would be unlikely to ask Penrith to move games away from their base at Pepper Stadium.

That is likely to leave both Manly and Cronulla needing to play a combined seven matches at Sydney’s big stadiums, which would most likely be at Allianz.

Manly, in particular, could prove a difficult case in the NRL.

Since their privatisation in 2004, the club’s constitution states they must play at least 10 games a season at Brookvale Oval.

That figure could only be decreased via a referendum of the district football club’s members, who hold a minority stake on the NRL club’s board.

The Sharks would also be unlikely to support a substantial move, given they only acquired a new naming rights sponsor for their Woolooware base earlier this month.

The NRL has until April 1 to achieve the 65-game commitment, and will then have until May 31 to decide how they want the funding split between Moore Park and ANZ Stadium.

Upgrades on Pirtek Stadium in Parramatta will begin this year.

Other than relating what it's like to punch someone in the face a dozen times, I've never heard any insight from Tallis. Give me Lara Pitt or Yvonne Sampson any day of the week.

They should play 1 game at most at Kogarah and at least 8 in Wollongong.

We need "football people" in the media, just like we need "football people" running clubs and the game.

Ok fair enough, the commentary is not great bythe former greats I'll give you that, but My initial arguements were about having people on a sports show who have never played and had any official role in the game trying to give thier expert opinion on a number of topics ( commentary is different anyone with a decent voice and a good vocabulary can do that as pretty Ray warren never played professionally) but having people give insite to a game they have never play regardless of gender does not work for me sorry.

I don't have a problem for the Sharks to have a couple of games at the SFS provided they are compensated and transport is decent. And the State Govt does something about traffic congestion, and not leave it in the too hard basket. I do have a problem where Penrith don't have to move games.Surely a couple for them at Parramatta Stadium would not hurt ,again if they were compensated by the NRL. One thing most people are forgetting, from 2018 the NRL is in control of scheduling ,and not at the beck and call of Ch9(the apparent home of rugby league? and Foxsports Rupert's love nest). With control of scheduling maybe just maybe the NRL can maximise crowds, ridding itself of Monday nights.

I've come to this one very late but I'll add my two bob anyway. My fair lady and I briefly looked at the footy show last night and I actually said "why is that girl dressed up that way, she's just there for decoration." - sexist, perhaps. Not meant to be, just my observation that if she wanted to be taken seriously she wouldn't be wearing off the shoulder numbers and pretending to be earnest. I'm not saying she should wear potato sacks, just that if she wore business attire she would project a more professional image. It's unfair, but women get more attention focused on their looks than men and if they want to compete in male dominated industries they have to be much, much better than the men. I think that applies to sports journalism as much as anywhere.

Yet again, the Wollongong/Steelers side of the JV gets shafted. Pity SL sent Steelers broke - fantastic identity and club equal to Newcastle's importance to RL.

I don't know why I'm bothering but here goes.. BJ, I watch those other shows because I like the format better, it's got nothing to do with the gender of the hosts. As an example I don't rate Gorden Tallis as a commentator and would listen to Lara Pitt, Yvonne Sampson, Kelli Underwood or Erin Molan any day of the week over Tallis. Ditto Fittler. Wally Lewis is one of my all time favourite players but I'd prefer any of the female commentators I listed ahead of him. These guys have probably a thousand first grade games, close to a hundred origins and however many tests but it doesn't automatically give them any more credibility as commentators. Try and consider what I'm actually saying rather than twisting my words to somehow suit your argument.

"I don’t understand why they ..." Don't worry Agent11, modern TV execs don't understand why either. Modern execs couldn't recognise TV talent if it tore up their contracts in front of them.

Her male co-hosts are unprofessional. Extremely so. During the World Club Series, Yvonne Simpson asked Brad Fittler about, I think it was St Helens, who then responded with, "I don't really know much about Super League..." A professional would have at least did some research beforehand... Yvonne poops all over those fools she has to work with. Except for Peter Sterling because he poops on them as well.

I agree. Manchester United are bigger than their city. The All Blacks allure and support goes well beyond their homeland. Identity and support are much more fluid and accommodating than most people think. Especially when a club is run well with the future in mind.

Homebush is everyone's home ground. And yet the clubs that play there regularly as a home ground have done pretty well in solidifying their supporter base and game attending fans. Belmore may still be associated with the Bulldogs and Redfern with the Rabbitohs but their fans still turn up to Homebush. I think the identity issue is a lot more fluid and accommodating than many people think.

I've heard Luke Darcy commenate netball on 10 and Moneyball isn't just a book, it's the succesful real world application of analytical data (by people who never played the game), over those "former player experts"
