WATCH: Greg Inglis impeded by the referee in Manly try

By Roar TV / Roar Guru

Greg Inglis was denied the chance to make a try saving tackle against Manly after being taken out by the referee, in what would have been a huge talking point if Souths had lost the game.

It happened on Manly’s second try when Apisai Koroisau busted through a gap for a four pointer. Replays showed that Inglis was in a position to potentially grab Koroisau but referee Gerard Sutton obstructed Inglis.

Eagle-eye viewers who spotted the incident noted that if a Manly player had been the one to obstruct Inglis it would instantly be called no try.

Inglis was never gonna get to him.

Haha. That was funny. Yes I have been a Broncos fan for some time and Hancock was there at the start. He could be quite embarrassing to watch. I am not fond of "thrashers" and to be fair Hancock was the King. He would even thrash on the ground when nobody was holding him. It was like he was re-enacting a kidnapping and he was in the car boot tied up. Then he would get up looking all indignant. I think he won a golden raspberry for his performance

I think that the standard is different in the case of the referee. In the case of a player, obstruction is called if there's ANY chance that the defender would get the attacker. In the case if the referee it's only obstruction if the defender would PROBABLY get him, so better than a 50/50 chance as opposed to any chance at all. The rationale there might be that you can absolutely rule out intention on the part of the referee but not on the part of the player.

I get what you're saying and I agree that Inglis was no chance. But we've seen tries disallowed when a player with no chance has been impeded by an opposition player. Morgan's no try against the Broncos last weekend being a case in point. I guess that's my point- maybe this is the way obstruction should be ruled rather than any contact ruling out a try when the defender was no shot at all.

Of course, but I fail to see how that is relevant. The rule has always been that it is the duty of the player to avoid the referee. If a referee does obstruct the play, it is his call whether to halt the play. In any case the attacking team keep the ball. The ref here made the correct call as Inglis was a snowballs chance of touching Api. And so GI took a massive dive to create some doubt. Well handled by Sutton.

Maybe go back to one referee the field. We still hear calls of one ref telling a team to do one thing and the othr ref saying the opposite.

I saw this at the time and wondered what the rule is when the referee interferes with play. I doubt Inglis would have stopped the try but I thought it would have been worth the bunker taking a look. I guess by not even being invited to do so, that's one hot potato avoided. And once again consistent inconsistency rules NRL. I notice the bunker changed a restart decision in last night's game (maybe more than one, I forget, but definitely one) but not a word on the one where Parcell forced a line dropout from a clearly offside position.

Is it not funny how the Ref always picks on your team-funny the opposition supporters have the same view. Poor diddums. If you are so wise get out in the middle yourself.

Had Souths won the game ? We did win the game. You missed two other rubbish decisions. Manly knocked on and the ref missed it, but everyone else saw it. Also, on the fifth tackle, Manly kicked infield, GI gathered the ball and was forced ingoal by a Manly player who was metres offside. Instead of a penalty, we had to drop out. Rubbish decisions.

The refs also missed an offside Matt Parcell which led to another attacking set on Souths line for Manly. Calls can go either way throughout however Manly had a few more fall there way

Best thrasher ever was the Broncos and Maroons Michael Hancock. Every time he was tackled he looked like he was having a fit.

talking of academy awards - perennial contends have to be Matia and George Tafuau. They deserve the diva award for thrashing around when tackled and then diving at the slightest touch. And the refs fall for it every week! They should follow the example of young Tom T who plays the game in the right spirit and not constantly trying to milk penalties.

So Inglis will be charged with coming into contact with the ref, yes?

Who cares? If the ref impedes play the team with the ball gets it back via a scrum anyway, and that would have been Manly. If Souths had have won the game it would be a huge talking point but it would have been cancelled out by the ridiculous two calls in the last few minutes when Manly were attacking - had the ball raked out and the ref called a knock-on, then when Souths hit it up from the restart they lost the ball cleanly and the refs called a penalty against Manly. Rubbish decisions.

It doesn't matter really but the ref should not interfere with the game, hopefully it does happen again. The whole game last night was just disappointing
