2016 Four Nations draw revealed, rugby league headed to Anfield

By Riley Pettigrew / Roar Guru

The draw for the end of the year Four Nations has been announced. England are set to host the event.

The tournament, which will feature Australia, New Zealand, England and Scotland, will be played over five weeks and will include a double header and a match at Anfield, the home of Premier League football club Liverpool.

The opening week of the tournament will see Australia up against Scotland at Hull while England will do battle with New Zealand in Huddersfield after the Lions trounced the Kiwis last year to win the Baskerville Shield.

Coventry will then host a double header as England and Scotland to go head-to-head while New Zealand and Australia will renew their rivalry.

New Zealand will play Scotland at Workington in the final week as England will face off against Australia at the Olympic Stadium in London.

The tournament final will be held at Anfield in Liverpool.

It leaves Scotland with no home games which has some rugby league fans scratching their heads.

In the past, European qualifying nations have hosted fixtures with France playing New Zealand at Toulouse in front of 12,000 fans in 2009 as well as in Paris against Australia.

2011 saw Wales do battle with Australia in Wrexham with the Bravehearts this year being denied the opportunity to grow the game in their own country.

The event is expected to be closer than ever with the big three nations building strongly toward the tournament. Scotland are expected to feature NRL stars Peter Wallace and Euan Aitken with skipper Danny Brough also tipped to run around again for the Bravehearts in 2016.

Lebanon continue to build toward 2017 Rugby League World Cup
Rugby league continues to grow in Lebanon with the Cedars set to face off with the Cook Islands on May 8 at Belmore Sportsground in preparation for next year’s world cup.

Lebanon have received a big boost with the 2016 college rugby league season ending with Balamand defeating LAU Varsity 17-10 in the grand final.

The fixture was close fought with Kevin Sassine helping the home side to a victory with a double while five-eighth Joey Aslan kicked a field goal late in the game to win the title for the University of Balamand.

Women’s game on the rise ahead of Trans-Tasman Test
The Australian Jillaroos and New Zealand Kiwi Ferns will face off in a curtain-raiser to the Anzac Test in a fortnight’s time at Hunter Stadium.

The Jillaroos are beginning to make their mark with the national team securing Jetstar as a team sponsor.

The airline company join Harvey Norman as sponsors of the Jillaroos with the team mentored by former Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes to receive plenty of exposure as their match will be broadcast on the Nine Network following the Anzac Test.

Teams selected on Sunday, May 1. No players should be rested for round 9 of the NRL.

Riley - I notice that The Warriors, Storm, and Broncos play on the previous Sunday - which is just 5 days prior to the May 6th fixture and stand alone representative weekend. Do you know if the selected Test players are in camp and excluded from these club games?

It's weird but I've always enjoyed seeing rugby league Test matches played on those grounds. As a kid, they always looked exotic to me.

Really? From my position in the stands the only thing second-rate about the event was the Kiwis' performance. Shame Scotland don't get a game but Olympic Stadium and Anfield would be epic.

The only place I can think of having a Scotland game is in the Borders . There's little Interest in league in Scotland and such is the ambition of the 4 Nations organisers they will target existing supporters in the north ie Lancs & Yorks to make the less arduous journey to Cumbria.

You and me both, the tiny in goal at Old Trafford made the world cup final look like a truly second rate event.

Whats the status of the four test series recently started between PNG, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga? This needs to be at least a once every two year event, if not more regular. Great to see PNG doing so well in the Queensland Cup and hopefully Fiji will get itself sufficiently organised to start in the 2017 NSW Cup. These island nations need to be encouraged big time and hopefully in a decade or two will be competing in a Southern Hemisphere country of origin series on a regular basis between those four and NZ and Australia (maybe even NSW and QLD)

Four nations draw looks good... Would've been right to give Scotland a home game but games staged across the country is still good.

If they're going to play on those soccer grounds, I hope they do something about the tiny in-goal areas.
