The NRL are wrong: Parramatta should not have the option to play finals football

By Beardan / Roar Guru

The Parramatta Eels shouldn’t be allowed to win this year’s competition. The reason is simple, you should not be allowed win a premiership in the season in which you were caught cheating.

It simply shouldn’t be an option.

Parramatta should not be rewarded for being caught out in March and April. If they were caught out in May and June, and got their points deducted from them then, then they couldn’t win the competition.

Fallout from the Parra salary cap scandal
» Parramatta only broke the 11th Commandment: Thou shalt not get caught
» Why Tuesday was the greatest day in Parra’s recent history
» Parramatta fans don’t deserve Parramatta’s boardroom
» Parramatta need to bring back The Emperor
» The Parramatta Five win first court battle against NRL
» Press conference: Parra breached the cap by $3 million, players may be investigated
» Parramatta docked 12 points, fined $1 million for salary cap breaches

A premiership should not be won on ‘when’ you were cheating, it should be won and lost on ‘if’ you were cheating.

Lets have a look at if another club gets caught for cheating, for example, in June. This club are running second on 24 points and looking to be in a great position. Lets say they are $450,000 over the cap, which is less than Parramatta but still significantly over.

The NRL, by being consistent takes all their points off them, accrued by means of cheating. By this stage Parra have won eight straight and are heading for a finals birth. So the second team caught cheating, although not as much over the cap as the Eels, but caught later in the season, have been punished worse than Parramatta.

Unfair? You better believe it.

If the NRL want Parramatta to play for points, then they can do so, but without the chance of playing finals football.

Todd Greenberg has said that when Melbourne didn’t play for points in 2010 it was ‘soul destroying’. This is far from fact.

Sure it felt flat watching them. But the players showed it was a great platform to show their character, as individuals and as a team. There can be little doubt that the character showed during their 2010 season contributed to a premiership just two years later. Melbourne displayed great qualities as a club and team when they could have thrown in the white towel.

Parramatta should not be allowed to win a premiership in a year they were caught cheating. The NRL have got this one wrong.

I Read another article now saying Parramatta wont have the 12 points deducted yet until they have their right of reply- within 28 days and then the NRL will confirm their sanctions as the sanctions announced are only interim ones- breach notice served on Parramatta - does that mean if Parramatta accumulate points during this period before the NRL table their final report and sanctions that Parramatta could lose more than 12 points announced in the interim report??- see below Parramatta will still have 12 competition points when they play South Sydney next Friday night and may continue to accrue points over the next month but then face being stripped of up to 20 points when the NRL makes a final determination on the Eels salary cap scandal. Assuming Parramatta make adjustments and come in under the salary cap, they will now be allowed to accrue competition points while five directors pursue legal action against their suspension after an apparent change of heart by the NRL on Thursday night. Some of the Furious 5's role is related to the operations of the leagues club which includes the football club so if the NRL bans them they are not able to undertake their league's club roles as board members/directors- I would imagine they will need to hold new elections for the board in that case and their tenure as board members is untenable?? - anyway the furious 5 need to get "the message" that their time is up and for the good of the game they need to move on as many have suggested. Parramatta should be signing Bernie Gurr as the new CEO as Sterlo suggested

There will be a major issue if they win the comp and or at least make the 8- i feel the accumulation of points should not occur until they play their 14th game proper (not including bye rounds) - they could only then if they win all the remaining 11 games plus the 2 byes finish on 26 points - 28 points will be the cut off for 8. Now they need to win 12 out of 15 which is not impossible to do. I am beginning to support Bernie Gurr's idea that players are paid through the NRL not directly by clubs and would go further to suggest club sponsors money is also held by the NRL and paid out to clubs when invoiced for by the clubs and that players wages are published too- i would say the NRL needs to abolish TPA's as Bernie suggested as it advantages some and disadvantages others who dont have access to these which favour one town teams. players wages need to be transparent

No issues with anyone you've mentioned.. Quality we could afford.. in fact Lussick has been going well since he's clear of the Cumberland curse. Your hapless team had to cheat to win wooden spoons mate.. last time I looked we don't have one of those.Good luck with that Supercoach too mate... you'll need it. After all he hasn't got access to players other coaches have developed at teams with better culture.

Give it a few more days and the NRL will give them their 12 points back as long as they say 'sorry we wont do it again'. Weak as ....

Pete, if you care to take the time and effort, why don't you educate The Roar audience with a list of how many times each team has made the top 8 over the duration of the NRL. The results according to you, should showcase how the salary cap is working so well with regards to equity. The truth is out there.

In theory it does Pete. In practice it does not. Whilst TPA's and salary cap rorts exist, it is you who is clutching at straws.

Yeah the 'salary cap; is an elution or a delusion of the NRL and they are flogging a dead horse, as is evident with what happened with the Eels.

Id say more that they mathematically have a chance to make the finals (however unlikely) is whats the upsetting aspect. Its also opened the door for Melbourne players, administrators to say they were hard done by

Even worse now. The club can start gaining points without having to comply with the NRL's guidelines. The NRL will allow Parramatta to get points even though the "Five" are going to court. Talk about backing down. Why penalise them at all.

Where was this salary cap auditor in 2013? I suspect if he was around there would have been a few feathers ruffled that year.

So a club can be over the salary cap for a few years by one to three mil, but,as long as they are under in current year it''s ok.Where then is the punishment?

The Storm were significantly more over the cap though.

The Storm were 25% over the salary cap. Parra are less than 10% over the cap. That's probably why the penalty is so different.

81paling, your tinfoil hat isn't on straight. I'm sure you are right, the Eels have done nothing wrong its all those terrible people at the NRL who just love to drag their sport through the mud.

When a person uses the term "unfair" what they actually mean is they want something. It is an emotional plea that has such little substance that it is hard to argue with, like if you ask someone talking loudly on a phone in a cinema during the quiet bit of the movie to keep their voice down and they say "why don't you". Oddly enough I actually agree with Beardan that the Eels should not play for points for several different reasons. 1. If this plays out in court like it will we get to know the truth (with Greenberg now implicated as a person who advised then GM Scott Seward in 2013 whilst he was at the Dogs it is starting to get interesting) 2. Crowds are up the game is doing well because a strong Parra means a strong League. It is wrong to string people a long with a slim hope when in reality the NRL will simply eventually say to Parra "you are still not compliant because you do not allow us to appoint a or several directors to the Parra board" something no club would ever do. 3. Parra made a deal with players come play for us we will pay you this much and they all did many moving families etc. Despite the fact that as more is revealed it appears Parra is compliant with this years cap the reality Watmough is about to retire no matter what happens putting them under the cap which Parra wanted to meet and discuss with the NRL. The NRL has refused, they are playing for time as they assumed Parra would just roll over like the Sharks did but, they have not therefore the NRL need desperate fans to demand from within Parra that it rollover so they can play for something that if they ever got close to the NRL will take from them anyway. Parra should be allowed to honor those contracts particularly now it appears there is nothing wrong with them. 4. As this saga continues it becomes less about Parra and the mistakes it made and more about how pathetic the NRL are starting to look. How their TPA's have no real foundation, their failure to do anything to prevent this from happening again when they had documented it, watched it, fined it and now seen that it is finally getting better and possibly fixed they have decided to try and smash it because the new head of the NRL is in fact implicated in it. So stand back everyone tell Parra they have got no hope and lets watch all the dirty laundry come out because Parra does not have a chance this year even if the NRL say they do. The conditions will be so restrictive they are not worth contemplating but, a court case where the law is ruled on by a judge that is impartial that would be interesting. I wonder what he or she would say about the $300k that went missing not to be investigated in Brisbane. Contracts like Gasnier and Lockyer who played on registerd contracts for a fraction of what they were worth yet by comparison not allow the registration of the FuLou contract in 2010. Reality is Beardan the NRL have to let Parra think it has a chance or they will be exposed for the contradictory overly complicated autocratic rulers that they have allowed themselves to become.
