Lock it in: Bucks and Eddie, it's time to go

By Grant Brookes / Roar Rookie

Nathan Buckley and Eddie McGuire, you are tremendous. Your contribution to Collingwood and the AFL has been outstanding.

You will both have statues erected to stand by Lou Richards and Bob Rose at the Holden Centre. But it’s time to go.

The Collingwood supporter base has overseen your management of the club for many years. Most recently it has parted company with Dayne Beams, Heritier Lumumba, Heath Shaw, Paul Seedsman and Ben Kennedy. All regulars at their new clubs while their replacements struggle at Collingwood.

Sharrod Wellingham and Jonathon Ceglar too.

These were list changes that supporters were told would allow the Pies to rebuild a list to take on the Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney. OK, we’ll live with that one… for a while.

But the list is awful.

Ben Sinclair’s disposal is awful. He is not up to AFL standard. He will not play in Collingwood’s next flag and should not play again. Jesse White and a couple of others should join him. White’s game against Melbourne was the worst effort I’ve ever seen in a Collingwood jumper.

Brent Macaffer, Nathan Brown, Tyson Goldsack, Dane Swan and Alan Toovey, the supporters love you, and thank you, but you are done.

Jordan De Goey, Taylor Adams, Jack Frost, Tim Broomhead, Josh Smith, Brayden Maynard, Jeremy Howe, Jack Crisp, Levi Greenwood and Corey Gault will never reach the level required. They cannot dispose of the ball.

The jury is out on Tom Langdon, Mason Cox, Jarryd Blair, Adam Oxley, James Aish.

Brodie Grundy is just not tall enough. He is brave, but Nic Naitanui, Aaron Sandilands, Todd Goldstein and just about any other ruckman beats him in the centre. This means no centre clearance domination and no wins for the Pies.

Jarrod Witts has no presence at all.

In fact, who is worthy of playing in Collingwood’s next premiership? Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar, Jamie Elliott, Marley Williams, Ben Reid, Travis Varcoe, Steele Sidebottom, Darcy Moore and Travis Cloke. Yes, Cloke!

The real problem is that Buckley has not picked the best Collingwood team available in all games this year. He is so intent on having his way, he doesn’t pick the best side.

Surely Cloke, an all-Australian, is worth more in the seniors? Buckley oversaw Cloke’s new contract in 2012, nurtured him, coached him, loved him and now he is not getting a game. It’s bizarre.

Does that mean Buckley has lost Cloke too? How about playing him at centre-half-forward and getting someone to help him out? Buckley has ruined the best contested mark in the league.

There are five players getting a game in front of Cloke who are unworthy – Broomhead, Howe, Cox, White and Smith. They have displayed far worse effort than Cloke. Are they really better inclusions?

The bottom line is that after five years of list management, the letting go of some club greats, drugs allegations, much bluster and hot wind, Collingwood is a bottom four club. If Eddie can’t make the change, he must go too.

True, but something failed dismally at Carlton with Malthouse. Whether it was his game plan or his interactions with the players, who really knows outside the club, it may all come out one day. Buckley may still do that after coaching 700 games but I doubt he will ever be a senior coach again after this.

You'd think after Bucks 58th losing game, the penny would have dropped. But it seems the footy world still sees Bucks the champion player he was and not the flawed coach he is now. You won't see many games where Bucks can recover his team once plan A starts to fail. But what you will always see is a press conference stating how his team has failed to execute the game plan. Can anyone execute it but the man himself, as if he could strap on his boots and carried the side like he did on the late 90's?

As a collingwood supporter of 50 years I have always gone to games. The only time I have not been to games is when Nathan Buckley took over. Nathan and Eddie together is disarterous worst combination in the history of C.F.F.C Magpies. I will not go to games as long as Eddie and Nathan are still there. Ed and Bucks must go and never ever come back ever. I will only go to the football when Bucks and Ed are gone.

The title of the article is on the money....But unfortunately that's where it ends. So much more could of been done with this. I agree with a few comments that the author hasn't delved deep enough! Hmmmm Ryan Buckland analysis on the Pies would be a very interesting read.....

Looks like Bucks is going to ride this truck all the way to the bottom of the hill. I for one, am thoroughly enjoying the spectacle. An even more interesting show will involve the efforts of his driving instructor to slip out of the passenger door unseen before the wreck occurs. Look on the bright side. Eddie did North a huge favor.

Could not have put it better myself mate. You are 100% correct. He alienated the so called " rat pack " who all played for Malthouse. Loved Malthouse. They did not adhere to Buckleys Robot philosophy's. These guys actually had personality and Buckley wanted them out so he could mould his own team. Why ? We had a young list at the top end of the ladder. Why do it ? Buckley systematically moved on Daisy, Didak, Jolly, Dawes, Shaw,Wellingham, Beams etc etc The game plan has been atrocious for 5 years. The man talks in riddles, like on 360 , Chris Scott answers questions clearly and precisely yet Buckley is smug and cryptic. No wonder the players do not play for him. He cannot relate . He has no people skills. I can see why Geelong play so well under Chris Scott. He is to the point and open. Eddies succession plan has failed dismally and he is too proud to admit it. For this reason he must go. Buckley must go . Any other coach would be long gone.

Good comment. The story here is appoint coaches with some experience in actual coaching. Hird and to a lesser degree, Buckley have been disasters for their clubs.

Worsfold and Roos are the exception but they are both pretty exceptional leaders.

Eddie has done a lot of good things but mainly for his Pies and other Victorian clubs. He looks after his own interests first and foremost. He's done his best to thwart the development of the game in the northern (and other interstate) markets. His comment about Goodes showed another side of Eddie, one he'd rather hide from public view. His decision to move on a 3-time premiership winning coach, that had the full support of his playing group that had one premiership under their belt with a young and exciting list that looked like contending for good while for an untried coach that he clearly loved might turn out to be one of the biggest footballing blunders in recent memory. I'm not sure if either of them should move on just yet, especially Eddie but I don't mind taking a whack at the man. He whacked a lot of people on the journey and he's big enough to take it. One thing is for certain, they have problems and they have a lot of work to do.

You're right TomC, I forgot Aish. He was traded-in for Pick 26 last year, which ended up going to the Doggies and being used to draft Key Defender, Kieran Collins (who is yet to debut, but by all accounts is showing a lot of promise in the VFL). Can't tell who will win out of that yet, but I suspect it will be the Doggies! Actually, it was a very complicated deal and I'm not sure I can figure out what exactly was traded for Aish, but it reads like this: - Collingwood received Aish and pick No.34 and 53, and gave up picks No.26, 28, 47 and a 2016 second-round pick; - The Lions received Bastinac and picks No.38 and 40, a 2016 second-round pick (St Kilda) and a 2016 third-round pick (North), and gave up Aish and pick No.17; and - North received picks No.17, 26, 28 and 47, and gave up Bastinac and picks No.34, 38, 40, 53 and its 2016 third-round pick.

Has anyone analysed the list management in detail involving trades under Buckley's reign? Out: Didak, Jolly, Heath Shaw (GWS), Dale Thomas (Carlton), Beams (Brisbane), Wellingham (West Coast), Lemumba (Melbourne), Ben Kennedy (Melbourne), Paul Seedsman (Crows), Chris Dawes (Melbourne), Pick 7 in 2015 (used on Jacob Hooper by GWS, an academy player), 1st Round pick in 2016 (likely to be high - for Treloar trade). In: Adam Treloar (GWS), Taylor Adams (GWS), Varcoe (Geelong), Howe (Melbourne), Jesse White (Swans), Quinten Lynch (West Coast), Clinton Young (Hawks), Patrick Karnezis (Brisbane), Matthew Sharenberg (drafted with Daisy Thomas exchange), Jack Crisp (Brisbane), Jordan De Gooey (pick traded for Beams). So the big names / high picks are Treloar, De Gooey, Adams and Scharenberg in exchange for Heath Shaw, Daisy Thomas, Dayne Beams, Jacob Hopper and 1st round 2016 pick. Probably need 3 of those first 4 names to turn out champs as a minimum, to break even. On the lesser names its Varcoe, Crisp, Howe, White, Lynch, Young and Karnezis in exchange for Wellingham, Lemumba, Kennedy, Seedsman and Dawes. Definitely a loss to the Pies there. Most of the "outs" appear linked to Buckley not wanting them, or them not wanting Buckley, so the resulting adverse deals are his fault.

I think players skills sometimes look poor precisely because of the uncertainty caused by opposition pressure, confusing game plan instigated by coach, teammates not running where they're supposed to run and lack of effort by teammates to provide run and support. Apart from opposition pressure, the other factors can be influenced by good coaches. Not all of the players mentioned in this article have poor disposal skills. Most of them will be fine, once a better coach is installed. The players listed as "will never reach the required level" is a silly statement. There's plenty of talent on this list, just waiting for a good coach to takeover. Buckley is more suited to media comments. Many of his assistants will be sacked with him - Rocca, Tarkyn Lockyer, Robert Harvey are cronies. What a plum job for somebody to land. Bomber Thompson?

Yep. Can't argue with that! What an unredeemingly stupid thing to do. Should have kept MM locked away, and bottled what he was able to bring out of players young and old. His gameplan was a delight to behold. I have never enjoyed watching footy more than when he coached us.

Ridiculous comment.... 'a student of the Malthouse school of coaching'. Bucks is not worthy of carrying his bags, boots or towel. Malthouse got us into 4 Grand finals.

Many a true word you have uttered there, my friend. As a Pie supporter I have wondered about the Kool-Aid scenario myself. it is as if we cannot, will not, dare not question the divine edicts of Sir Bucks.
