Parramatta Eels player Corey Norman has been issued with a court attendance notice following news that some of the pills he was caught with at the Star Casino in Sydney last weekend contained MDMA.
Norman will face court on two charges, one for possession of an illegal drug, and one for possession of a prescribed restricted substance. Norman’s legal team have already been issued with a court notice.
The prescribed restricted substance has been reported by Fairfax to have been muscle relaxants.
Possessing a prohibited drug in New South Wales carries a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment. If the pills are found to be MDMA then Norman has clearly broken section 10 of the Drug Misuse and Trafficking Act which states:
“a person who has a prohibited drug in his or her possession is guilty of an offence.”
Chief Rugby League report for Fairfax Adrian Proszenko broke the news on Wednesday Afternoon via Twitter.
The news comes after Norman, along with fellow Eel Junior Paulo and Penrith Panthers hooker James Segeyaro were snapped having dinner with bikies and alleged criminals, before Norman was stopped by a metal detector with a container of white pills. The incident forced the NRL’s hand, as they made a statement earlier today warning players about who they choose to spend their time with.
In light of those events the New South Wales Police have have officially warned all three players about consorting with convicted criminals.
It adds to a horror few weeks for the Parramatta club, who have endured punishment from the NRL over salary cap breaches, as well as the illness of star recruit Kieran Foran.
The Parramatta Eels play the Newcastle Knights at Hunter Stadium next Monday Night.

The NRL has made it really clear that they are OK with having crooks in the competition just as long as they are good players. How Todd Carney gets shown the door but Russell Packer and Blake Ferguson can still play is completely beyond me. Get photographed with bikies and you're on notice though, because obviously you're not allowed to hang out with crooks unless they are your team mates.

Maybe publically exposing himself at best.

Although I do agree with you that Pearce should have been fired, it was a club issue at best the NRL went well and truly overboard, so now we have players that have actually broken laws and have been handed slaps on the wrist in comparison.

Law doesn't factor into it. As with Pearce, it was a public footage/image of a public act. Brings the club and game into disrepute. Every contract would have clauses around this. Most jobs have clauses around this (if an executive of Facebook was caught on camera doing what Pearce was, they would have been fired).

Perhaps this is part of his TPA from the Eels.

No, he hasn't broken the law - he's alleged to have broken the law but until he's convicted in a court of law, it's only an allegation. If he is convicted, he should get the book thrown at him by the NRL, though..

Pearce gets 8 weeks and a massive fine for being drunk and acting like a goose and so far Norman has got nothing for actually breaking the law (Criminal Act). As usual the hypocrisy is astounding.

That's all I can find online as well. A Tex Perkins classic is about to become Corey's theme song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEB0l6OqLR4

True - was this after today's confirmation of the substance he was carrying?

Correct Kaks, that's an average retail dose. Dealers are like pharmacists. They buy or make pure product, and then cut it. Fillers for capsules include electrolyte powder, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose. The larger 000 capsules comfortably hold a gram of powder.

Interestingly enough he wasn't charged with supply (usually possession over a certain amount automatically qualifies as "intent to sell").

Capsules dont usually have 1 gram of MDMA in them, they usually have 0.1-0.2 grams of MDMA in them.
