Warrior Gubb cops 7-week NRL judiciary ban

By News / Wire

Warriors NRL prop Charlie Gubb has been hit with a seven-week suspension after unsuccessfully challenging the grading of his shoulder charge on Manly’s Darcy Lussick.

He was cited for the shot at the 13-minute mark of the Warriors’ loss to Manly on Saturday in Perth.

On Wednesday night, Gubb failed in his bid to have the grade-two count downgraded and was found guilty by the judiciary.

Greg Bird will miss Gold Coast’s clash with Parramatta after taking an early guilty plea on Tuesday for his high tackle on Gareth Widdop.

Bird remains the fourth-most suspended player of the NRL-era after pleading guilty early to a grade-two careless high tackle from the Titans’ win on on Friday night over St George Illawarra.

It is the second time Bird has been suspended this season. The former representative player will return for Monday week’s for the round-21 fixture against Cronulla.

Newcastle’s Jake Mamo and Daniel Saifiti will miss Sunday’s round-20 clash with Cronulla after taking early guilty pleas on their respective match review committee charges.

Mamo opted for an early plea on his grade-two dangerous contact charge and Saifiti did likewise on his grade-one shoulder charge.

Knights utility Sione Mata’utia pleaded no contest to a grade-one careless high tackle and took a one-match ban, but he is sidelined for four weeks due to a jaw injury.

Also on Tuesday, Penrith forward Lelani Latu took the early guilty plea on a tripping charge, but escaped suspension.

A shoulder charge doesn't have to hit the head to do damage, just ask Ackerman's parents who died from a massive whiplash from a shoulder charge, the shoulder charge should be banned, in fact the guy that killed Ackerman has just finished a 2 week suspension from a shoulder charge & against Ackermans Sunshine Coast team, he was penalised for a shoulder charge & then did another one which resulted in a punch up & abuse, the judiciary have issued the charge sheet for a 3 week suspension. So the NRL & the QRL are not trying hard enough to stamp it out.

Yeah the Racism thing probably is a bit much on my part but it seems to be the Warriors who get the rough end of the pinapple every time and as they are the only non Aus side it becomes a bit hard to say much else. I was a Tigers supporter prior to the warriors entering the comp and never had this constant thing where their players got harder suspensions than other teams got. Also after many years of watching SOO or AUS test reps get almost nothing and seeing kiwi test reps get way over-the-top sentences it becomes hard to leave the word "RACISM" out of the conversation. Also Corey norman gets 8 weeks for what he did but Gubb 7. Just so unfair with no avenue of justice

What annoyed me with the penalty was the Souths player got off scot free for stomping.

Well Gubb *is* a dirty player, this would've been a 3 week suspension (2 with an early guilty) if not for his prior offences. He definitely shoulder charged, he definitely has done it before, and he definitely needs to get it out of his game.

Parker gets one week for a deliberate elbow to the face to someone on the ground and Inglis gets 3 weeks for bracing himself and then 7 for this - is there madness about??

The ref didn't even award a penalty at the time, or put it on report? Lussick got up straight away & didn't have a problem with it, & also defended Gubb on twitter saying the decision was wrong. I think a charge & suspension is fair if the NRL are serious about stamping this sort of stuff out of the game, but the grading was too high & the Warriors were right to fight it IMO. The tackle in isolation is not worthy of 3 weeks when you compare it to Inglis' charge. I think a grade 1 charge, & the resulting suspension with loading etc is fair, & the Warriors also thought similar which is why they contested it.

Problem is EJ its not similar to Inglis' tackle. Gubb was in a 3 man tackle and made no contact with head. Should be grade one. Inglis was one on one squared up, braced himself and got Dugan in the jaw. Correct move from Warriors to challenge but Judiciary as usual throw the book at an easy target instead of punishing the likes of Thaiday, Gallen, Parker as they should.

racism.....hmmm, a bit OTT! Oh well Charlie's gone for the season, I don't think many will care! Hang on didn't the tackler of the Newcastle bloke get 6 weeks, Inglis 3!!! I barely remember the shoulder charge other than, oh that looks like trouble. No head clash, no upside down! I know the feeling Jacko; but most of the time it's fair! But I do laugh ( sob ) when I think of the No penalty or anything when Hoffman was held back at the line ( and Lolohea by Boyd, I think we were winning by too much then ) and then the Warriors get one binned and then a penalty try against us!!! THAT'S JUSTICE!! If you were Charlie, you'd have to think someone is going overturn this, cause it's just not right. Don't hold your breath Charlie,

Good point eJ - but I'd still say 3 weeks for that tackle is excessive given there was no contact with the head. Especially compared to Inglis who broke Dugans jaw and only got three weeks.

Agree. The Warriors were the side to get a penalty try against them, the side to have someone sin-binned etc etc. Whenever there is a loud media outcry over any rule interpretation the Warriors team is the side where "justice" is metered out.

Hang on has anyone actually looked at the grading and the circumstances surrounding the 7 weeks? Gubbs tackle on Lussick was worth 3 weeks with an early plea. Deemed a Grade 2 (similar to Inglis). But with 2 similar prior offences over the last 2 years that pushed it out to 5 weeks. The Warriors chose to fight the grading knowing that if they lost he'd get 7 weeks. Their error. But the tackle itself was only 3 weeks.

Yeah - it's probably (hopefully) more Gubbs profile than a warriors thing but it certainly reeks of an unknown being made an example of.

Perhaps the player should take this to the courts as I havnt seen a more biased decision. Inglis got 3 weeks??? Seriously!!! Why is it always the Warriors that get treated with contempt by the NRL. The sport keeps on and on and on about racism and continually comes up with racist decisions against the only non Australian side in the comp. Why do they keep the Warriors in the comp? Just to use them as player recruitment thats why. Sick of the reffing, Sick of the bias, sick of the racism and sick of the NRL

My thoughts exactly TB - Inglis charged with shoulder charge, contact with head, breaks Dugan's jaw, 3 weeks is another example. I feel for the Warriors and Gubb now gets painted as a dirty player.

He's a soft target TB. Not a well known player and out of mind out of sight over there at the Warriors. the NRL can point to this for the rest of the year as proof they are serious about clamping down on the shoulder charge. They'll threaten the same ban to others but we won't see it. If he was from a leading Aus club the media influence along with the NRL fear of a media backlash would have seen him get only 3 weeks. Imagine the uproar if Josh McGuire or Matt Scott got 7 weeks? We'd be seeing a montage of all the worse examples from the season that didn't recieve a suspension at all played across the Fox and CH9 footy shows.
