Men's rugby sevens results, Day 2: Australia, NZ knocked out in quarters

By The Roar / Editor

The Australian men’s Rugby Sevens team has been ejected from the competition after losing 22-5 to South Africa in the quarter-finals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Australia played South Africa twice in one day, meeting them earlier in their last pools match knowing they needed a win to make the quarter-finals.

And they got it, triumphing in a tight battle, 12-5. As one of two third-place qualifiers, they found themselves in the unusual position of being matched up with one of their pools opponents in the quarters.

» Re-live the action in our live blog of the rugby sevens

Try as they might, they just couldn’t repeat the dose – the South Africans put on the first two tries of the match and while Australia got one back before half time, it would be their last and only score of the fixture.

South Africa piled on two more tries in the second half, one of them converted, to finish with the dominant 22-5 scoreline and end Australia’s hopes of winning a medal in the event.

Australia will still feature in tomorrow’s matches as part of the 5th-8th play-off, with their first scheduled to take place against Argentina at 3am (AEST).

Six other teams made the quarter-finals – the other three match-ups were Fiji against New Zealand, Japan against France, and Great Britain against Argentina.

Fiji knocked out a New Zealand outfit still reeling from the injury to Sonny Bill Williams earlier in the day 12-7, Japan came back from 0-7 to win 12-7, while Great Britain and Argentina fought it out for no score until Great Britain went up 5-0 in extra time.

It’s bad news for Williams unfortunately, whose Achilles injury will see him ruled out for up to nine months, and certain to miss the upcoming Rugby Championship.

We are left with two exciting semi-finals tomorrow – Fiji will go up against Japan, and Great Britain are against South Africa. The semi-finals are on at 3:30am (AEST) and 4:00am (AEST) respectively.

Quarter-finals scores
Fiji 12 defeated New Zealand 7
Japan 12 defeated France 7
Great Britain 5 (aet) defeated Argentina 0
South Africa 22 defeated Australia 5

Of course the second placewinner deserves acknowledgement but the Kiwi women were not sharing the limelight with the Haka, they were stealing it. The only comparable precedent that I can think of was the All Blacks having a hissy fit when the Welsh required them to do the Haka be for the Welsh anthem in Wales, both instances are incredibly disrespectful and reflect a lot of immaturity in my book. A lot of Kiwi rugby supporters really need to get over themselves, New Zealand is the best at rugby but that country does not own the sport and Kiwis are not entitled to do whatever the hell they want at rugby games. It is not only reflected in this sort of nonsense but also the behaviour of All Black fans at tests, they are by far the worst behaved of any I have experienced.

Good one Antoni, "choke" is a rubbish word all round, and I always thought it meant if you couldn't get your Weet Bix down, not playing sport! No Player or Team of any sport or recreation deliberately goes out there to lose!

Whakaata Ehoa', The big problem in New Zealand is getting the players to play the game as you'd be well aware, they just don't like the game much at all and the 15s Selectors are never going to tell any of their top players that they 'must' play sevens, they just to put it mildly don't wear the game well at all and never have really. Sevens rugby is a novelty game no less and in a sense it's a specialist game that not all 15s players can get into their heads around ~ think old Sonny Bill, he struggled for ages to get the gist of the game with the extra mileage they have to cover etc, not counting the specialist moves as he admitted himself that, it was going to take all his time from when he made his decision to go to Rio to the Olympics proper just to understand it. ~ He also had another string to his bow in the fact that he knew very well he was going straight back into the All Black squad regardless! The current Kiwi 7s squad is a very good squad but they had a horrific run of injuries and they won't gripe about that. Because the game of sevens isn't the most well served game around in New Zealand in the popularity stakes, the National sevens Squad only get together not that long before any tournament which has seen old Titch' tearing his hair out trying to get players to play at all. They'll learn from this and as you say there should be a very, very different scenario next Olympics as the performance these games being as it was, it could be classed as an embarrassment in a sense, so I doubt it'll happen again, who knows mate the powers that be may just put a bit of effort into a National Sevens Squad. But for all that the Kiwi Sevens have a very, very good record in Sevens rugby for many years having done themselves proud over and again having been World Champs a few times and correct me if I'm wrong mate, but I think they've got a better record against Fiji in wins/losses. It is the Fijian National game and that's what they do, all their waking hours running around on the park, ~ and occasionally they do play the 15 man game just not as well as 7s! All hail the boys from Fiji!!

Your comment actually had nothing to do with the haka. You stated clearly that second place had no right to share the limelight with the winner. This is disrespectful, ignorant and downright stupid. The silver medallist can celebrate, mourn or dance any way they like.

Damn... double damn, and like sorry moaman as that's twice I've gone the Tibetan over the Mongol. What's worse I pride myself on my long term memory, not my short term... as it up the shyte. Too much substance abuse... I think. Yeah, I think. What were we talking' about? :) Hey, my littlest bro came all the way from Perth to visit (?) my/our oldies who live in Yass, NSW and he had a similar experience your bro as well. So as he's here he heads to the local club to watch a bit of live Rugby. Not for the Final but a couple of important games leading up to it... and if my short term memory was any good I could tell which games. Anyhow, he's watching on the BIG screen the NZ timezone game on his pat malone at the local club... and all good there. Sorta. And for real atmosphere he had a phone hook-up with me in Sydney. Then for the next game... ah yes it was da Tahs and Canes (geez us... god works in mysterious ways, and it's a miracle that I can remember that) so he now decides to buy a meal and a bottle of wine only to come back to his table to find the club had switched the TV to the league!! And on (polite) inquiry is told it's Saturday night mate... time for the League mate. WTF... like he's the only person in the place. Nah mate can't help you... it's Sat Night League. Long story short... they hooked him up with another little TV for the Rugby. The roast dinner was shyte, the wine was average... and those effin' Canes pants da Tahs! Hey moaman, does that sorta shyte ever go down, in ahead of time, NZ?

Mongolian mate,Machooka. Tibetan Butter Tea....now that's a memory! No mate---just plodding along, minding my own business and trying not to fall foul of the mean kiwi ( or moa ) hunters that lurk around this thread..... ;-) MY older brother lives in place called Lockhart,NSW,down near the Victorian border.....he had to drive the 60 kms to Wagga Wagga to watch the Super Final....when he got there the bar was showing Aussie Rules but kindly put on the outside screen solely for him.So he stood out in the cold and was an audience of 1 and watched the 'Canes. <--------That's dedication,eh?

Oh look Peter throwing out a personal attack and only a few posts up he is complaining of that exact same thing. I have been around this site for a very long time much longer than most people who are commenting here and I have to agree that people have been banned for the exact same thing as Peter is doing now. I recall Spiros son openly posting about posters being removed and banned. Funny thing though it was mostly non australians and I recall Biltong was one of many who were rightfully warned and moderated at time. As for a rugby analysis Peter why not actually offer some for once.

Seems that it is you that takes the whole thing too seriously. Seems it is you that is so easily offended. silly-presumptuous-attention seeking - that is Kiwis for you -haka at the opening of an envelope -demeaning - these are your words and generalisations. it was you that brought the issue up.

Yes, it kinda proves my point that they may take themselves a wee bit too seriously, doesn't it.

both correct, I have the courage of my convictions and see no need to post under other names. You can get banned or put on permanent moderation. For personal insults mainly. Whakaata is in lala land if someone should be banned for commenting on rugby teams / players on a rugby site as a general rule.

not me i'm afraid, I visit other rugby sites but I do not post on any others, and of these others none are blog sites except perhaps for green and gold and I don't like the format of posting and replying so I don't.

Yeah me too. Just a marvelous result for Fiji. Once NZ were out of contention I was hoping Fiji would win. They should have performed the Cibi.
