Hayne cam jumping the shark

By NF / Roar Guru

Last I checked rugby league is a team sport. While the individual brilliance of the best rugby league players are highlighted weekly within the rugby league community, the introduction of a camera to focus on an individual player is jumping the shark when it comes to rugby league.

The focus on one player within a team can be over-bearing to supporters of that team, look at my team the North Queensland Cowboys. With a record amount of players playing for State of Origin this year the focus tends to be about Johnathan Thurston.

To the point it which the team is seen as one player team discrediting the likes of Matt Scott, Michael Morgan, Jason Taumalolo and the rest of the squad.

The arrival of Jarryd Hayne to the Gold Coast Titans has seen a degree of hype never experienced before for the franchise. However the core focus should remain on the team and not one person.

As the cliche goes there is no I in team. The introduction of Hayne to the Titans shouldn’t undo the work the Titans have done to this point, going from a rabble to fighting for a potential top eight spot.

I’m happy to see the Titans on the upswing after a bad couple of years. The arrival of Hayne should see the Titans get better, providing Hayne return to this best. At the same time, the focus shouldn’t be around one person. There should be focus on the entire team from the star players to the bench players.

Dedicating a camera to one person is discrediting the entire team and rugby league is a team sport.

be good if it was in HD- picture quality is poor. It is interesting to watch the play away from the ball. I was player watching Matt Moylan on the weekend at Hunter Stadium - he is good to watch

Player cam is not a new thing. Most big games will have a cam focused on one great player. In this case it appears over the top but the spectacle around Hayne's return plus the fact he started from the bench (because it seems ludicrous to watch someone on the bench) makes the Hayne Cam appear unusual. Now he is a starter the game will supersede the need to watch his every step. Then Hayne Cam will just be his highlights shown in breaks. At the moment Hayne is the headline to the Titans interesting 2016 story. Remember, he is in Qld now. If they don't make the finals he doesn't make the backpage paper up here.

Jumping the shark relates in regards to the media coverage focus on an individual player, typically it involves interviews and articles. But to introduce a camera to focus on that one person during the game is over the top, I'm fine with pre/post match press attention to the star players but to have a camera dedicating to one is jumping the shark in rugby league coverage.

I actually like the idea of Hayne cam in the sense of giving a more comprehensive view of any given player, I'd like it much more if they put it on different players in different roles every game -- it'd be nice to watch other players highlighted the same way; the more I think about it, the more I want Jason Taumalolo cam because he seems to pop up out of nowhere sometimes.

It means something that's gone on too long / run out of ideas; it refers to the first episode of Happy Days season 5 where Fonzie jumped over a shark in a cage on a water ski, which was generally considered the downturn point of the series.

"jumping the shark"
One of these days I will find out what this silly, childish phrase means. I suspect there are many people like me who also do not know.

Since the start of the 2016 season, well before the Stratojet's arrival, the Titans have been consistently competitive winning and when losing by a few points in the main. They have a tough bunch of forward ,some old school types, and revelations in the backs like Taylor,McDonald."is Don is good" Hurrell,Mead et al. Written off at the start of the year, they have blended well under Henry's coaching, and after all the negative dramas of the past swirling around the club, deserve all the on and off field credit they have engendered. The arrival of the Hayne plane is the touch of class or the icing on the cake ,that will ensure a top 8 spot ,and who knows from where they go.

The Titans players seem tobe taking it in good humour with a few digs at Hayne at training or the post gam press conference. It's been a bit of a perfect storm here. You've got Hayne's NRL return, the drama with Parra fans and the fact that Hayne has slotted into a side that have over-achieved already this year, but have done ith with a 'bits and pieces' squad that were picked by pretty much everyone to finish bottom three. He's added star factor to their roster and some additional drive for a top 8 spot. Love him or hate him, hes delivering on the field. I don't think we'd have seen this if Hayne had signed with the Storm. It's all a bit silly but it won't last forever. I like the red button. It would be good if Fox could introduce it as a regular feature - obviously with a different player each time. It's pretty interesting seeing what players - particularly halves - are doing off the ball.

"The introduction of Hayne to the Titans shouldn’t undo the work the Titans have done to this point, going from a rabble to fighting for a potential top eight spot." Spot on. I said this the second he signed on and everyone started lauding them as competition dark horses. If I'm any other Titans player, I'm pretty annoyed that suddenly our finals appearance is all because of Hayne who, to be fair, only has a 50-50 win rate in the NRL right now. But this is just like the NRL media (this site included). For some reason, Hayne is a god to the NRL followers, when in reality, he was never even good enough to play fullback for Australia. He has only ever participated in 1 origin win, and has led a team that was over the salary cap to nothing. I, for one, have never been, and will never be, on the Hayne plane, thats for sure.
