Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for the Springboks?

By The Roar / Editor

29-9. Well, that’s better than 42-8, but not by a significant amount. Australia has coughed up the Bledisloe Cup to New Zealand for the fourteenth time in a row.

In last night’s trip to Wellington, the Wallabies were shown up by our Antipodean rivals the All Blacks once again – making it five Tests this year that the Aussies have lost without a single win.

The Rugby Championship takes a break next week, before Australia hosts the Springboks at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday 10 September.

So what needs to be done between now and then? Were the changes made for this Test good ones – or should they be reversed? Should we stick with the current set up and hope it comes good, or bring in some fresh faces and pray for a turnaround?

For the answer to that all-important question, Roarers, we’re turning things over to you.

What changes need to be made ahead of the Test against the Springboks? Who fared well last night, who flopped? Who deserves another chance, and whose time is up? Who are Australia’s best options waiting in the wings? In short: who comes in, who goes out?

There will, we bet, be a variety of opinions on the matter, and in this week’s Roar Forum you are invited to let us know in the comments what yours is.

For your reference, here’s the full team from last night:

Wallabies team vs the All Blacks in Bledisloe 2
1. Scott Sio, 2. Stephen Moore, 3. Sekope Kepu, 4. Kane Douglas, 5. Adam Coleman, 6. Scott Fardy, 7. Michael Hooper, 8. David Pocock, 9. Will Genia, 10. Quade Cooper, 11. Dane Haylett-Petty, 12. Bernard Foley, 13. Samu Kerevi, 14. Adam Ashley-Cooper, 15. Israel Folau.

What changes do you want to see for the next Test? Let the debate begin!

Pretty certain TPN has had better throwing stats than Moore this year.

I agree Rugby Tragic. Gill is a great player and would be my long term 7 (especially with Pocock heading off next year) if available. And I am a Tahs fan, so it can't be said I am a biased Reds fan.

if they pick Cooper, and I like his skills a lot, then play him in the front line all the time in both attack and defence. Moving him about does not do him any good.

Cooper was VC under Link. All this maturity talk is BS. He was always fierce courageous competitor who ran the show with flair and vision for the Reds. His skill set is far superior to Foley's. He reads the play far better than Folau; Quade was taking the high balls on Saturday night while Folau stood around like a confused Rules player. Toulon used him at fullback until Halfpenny recovered from injury. The wallabies scored Zero tries on Saturday night. The team needs time to develop attacking combinations. Foley's career as the starting test#10 is over. He should get 20 minutes at the end of the game when things have slowed down to a pace he can handle.

I'll settle for a change in attitude. The ABs are simply beyond us right now. We can be graceful in defeat. I do think some of the ref decisions and behaviour could be addressed but not in the truculent boorish way we are currently and if we are honest oz complaining about the referee is like bitching that your airbag should be more effective because you got injured driving into an oncoming truck at 200km/h it's just not the most important issue. Australia used to have great defense, Australia used to also come home strongly in the last 20 minutes because of fitness, we had ball skills. Currently we have none of this. Changing the players around is just window dressing. Stick with the current crop and just woke them harder on the basics.

I agree @Piru. Moore looks beaten and slow and needs to go now. Hanson to hook. The captaincy should revert back to Genia or Pocock. With the Giteau law I think Cheika should save that for northern hemisphere matches unless there is an emergency. I agree with the general sentiment that Folau should move to the right wing. But the real problem is the front 5. Not sure what else can be done there? Getting someone new to throw the lineout is a start. Especially against South Africa.

They need to start picking their best players. Wallabies in recent years have a terrible habit of making room for their favourites and moving people in and out of position constantly. Pocock is the best 7 in Australia - yet he starts at 8 to make room for Hooper to run around in the backline Moore's lineout throwing has been poor to diabolical and has been a major factor in the deterioration of the Aussie lineout - why is he still there? The French connection have all been playing subpar rugby in a subpar comp and are now expected to return to top form against the All Blacks in a Bledisloe series? Which have them has been worth the plane ticket? Genia was ok, but Phipps (despite his shoe throwing) has been better Cooper held his position ok for a change but did nothing of note Go to the Super teams, pick out your best young side and start blooding them now. What have you got to lose?

Sack Moore , he lumbers around like he has trouble getting into a trot, bring in some forwards with some ticker and ball skills, move Folau to the wing , he is not a ball player , he has to run off someone else to be effected. It is obvious the Wallabies have no depth , you can't blame the coach for that, but you can blame him for putting players in positions that are clearly out of their depth. The ARU's belief that RU in this country is as professional as the AFL and NRL is a mistake and is only hurting the game. The ARU must realise that they have build from the bottom up and build a plan . Because the top have not the skills or professssionalism to excite an audience.

Please. The Cavs beat the Warriors because Bogut got hurt and the Warriors could no longer protect the rim. After Bogut went out it was basically a layup line for the Cavs.

Thanks TDN and all good points except when did DHP start at FB and now only require "one last chance at FB"? DHP should be tried at FB with Folau at 13 (as you say) or even on the wing.

Couldn't agree more Sofa Couch, have the best no 7 in the world and play him at lock. Pick a specialist no 8 , say McCallum, and goes a long way to helping solve our lineout problems as well. I too would stick with QC, kicking game on Saturday was much improved, but if you have QC you don't need Foley at 12, give Hodge or Kirevi the guernsey.

The first thing the Wallabies must change is there attitude. Whining and complaining about everything is just not a way to succeed. Stephen Moore has been a great player but his massive attitude change constantly complaining to the referee seems to have developed a team attitude of being deserving of more. Moore must go, that is a complete given. A captain must not only lead from the front but with an upbeat attitude that all can relate to, including the referee. The line out must be addressed ball cannot be thrown away so consistently. Surely they can go back to basics in the line out, throw to 2 or 4 jump high bring the ball to ground, All the movement in the line out is not working 5 man line outs except for set piece close to the try line. Then wrap and hold in the tackle, the tackling skills have been sadly lacking. Back to basics, wrap and hold bring to ground. Then we can look at bringing some of the developing players into the team and look to build a team for the future. AI few test matches at the higher intensity will build confidence. I feel we are defeated before we even walk onto the field.

Actually Nobrain - your the only one with a brain, your spot on and until they identify the root cause of the problem then there is no way your going to find a cure to this systemic problem of coaching/losing the big games. Your spot on again, IF and thats a big IF the Aussies just happen to beat either the Argies or the Bokkies they will 100% fall into this false sense of security, that all things are back on track and honkydory - alas, with the greatest assistance coming from those dumb-arse sports commentators Phil Kearns and Co and main stream media. Fact is they have a mountain to climb thats for sure, and maybe the answer is right under their nose, but they can't see the trees through their nose hairs. ANSWER; Follow and adapt the All Blacks system, it's a sure fire system that works well for them, you think the Poms aren't ashamed to look into their system, listen to the way Eddie Jones speaks he has differently been reading and listening to every word spoken by Steve Hansen, coz he is using the same language. We are living in the global age and now have the luxury of " following the trend" or as the young ones call it "whats trending" and don't have to wait for the answers - once the Aussies have learnt to eat our beautiful sweet "humble pie" they can go chat with the Kiwis Steve Hansen and Co, they will happily share their knowledge. But the reality is AUSSIE PRIDE and HONOR is a much bigger mountain to climb. Rather die eating wichity grubs then ask a bro to hold the tackle bag.

Put it this way: when Dagg scored that try, there were four WBs within four metres of him. Cooper was the only one good enough to get a hand on him.

Yep. Fullbacks get that automatic 15-20 m on the first part of their catch-and-kick before they hoist their garryowen.

I think the WBs will be facing a stronger scrum, too. More like the England series. (Not that our kickers are using that edge well).

I was quickly brushing up on SR stats. For SR 2016. Noticed DHP is 2nd only to Damien McKenzie on metres (by 21m) run for all players Not a single metre from the wing :)
