Super Hurricanes sign another Barrett

By News / Wire

The Hurricanes have won the race for the prized signature of rising playmaker Jordie Barrett.

The youngest of a talented group of rugby-playing brothers, 19-year-old Barrett has signed for two seasons with the Super Rugby champions.

Brother and All Blacks five-eighth Beauden Barrett will be a teammate, winning a family battle.

Lock Scott Barrett plays for the Crusaders, whose new coach Scott Robertson stated he was keen to sign the New Zealand under-20 playmaker Jordie.

The brothers’ father, Kevin Barrett, was a Hurricanes loose forward in the late 1990s.

Jordie Barrett says the decision to commit to rugby fulltime was difficult as it meant giving up competitive cricket, having represented Central Districts at age group level.

“It has been a goal of mine to play Super Rugby and to be able to train and play alongside Beauden at the Hurricanes will enable me to continue to develop as a player,” he said.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd described the teenager as an “undoubted talent with a real drive to succeed”.

Jordie Barrett has played a variety of backline positions this year for NPC leaders Canterbury.

Think that NMS will be looking at playing wing for the Hurricanes (he isn't going to move Smith or Dagg at 15 for the AB's). Barrett jr can play 15, 12 or 13 very well. I believe that there is a vacancy in the hurricanes midfield next year.

They did but it wasn't enough, young Barrett wanted to be part of a winning team I guess ;)

Based on not watching him of course. Well I think I'd rather listen to opinions of people that have watched him so thanks but no thanks.

Gee I'm surprised that the Crusaders didn't do anything in their power to stop him from leaving.

different strokes for different folks.... hurricanes are playing footy club rules here, by keeping a good player on the bench and not letting go. with gus pulu and sonny bill besides him , black can be a very good player. no one cared about ritchie mounga a couple of seasons ago. in the next couple of seasons , he will be better than sopoaga ..... its amazing what gametime can do for ur confidence, with some quality players besides u :).

That maybe so, like I said haven't seen any provincial stuff, but I don't think he's a player that super rugby teams will fight over, if Black was the starting first five for my team I'd be writing off the season

NMS has to first get on the park. he played in centers for Under 20 team , but has excelled at 15 for canterbury. even proctor i think , has been a fullback - its not a big issue.

i doubt - he looks more like a 6' 6" 2nd rower. when he plays alongside Romano , there is hardly any height difference (for canterbury / crusaders). (like Brodie and Sam together are hardly different in height).

I'm a canes fan and haven't seen mitre 10 cup but when I've seen Black play he seemed quite pedestrian, for a young guy this isn't a good sign, he kicks well but reminds me of a poor man's David Howell, I think Boyd and co know this hence lack of game time and now this signing Blues want him, go nuts, will be yet another average blues first five that we can add to the list for the last 10 years or so

Yeah, Jordie at 12 outside Beauden with Matt Proctor at 13 sounds good to me.

NMS is a fullback. Jordie is more likely to play in the centres. I'd say Jane and Savea will have the wings wrapped up. The Canes backline will once again be bloody dangerous.

Black is a 10 forced to play at 15 or 10 due to presence of others. i doubt he has played 80 minutes off the bench last super season , let alone a full game. Jordie is very good ; i will stick my neck out and say he will be better than Beauden in a few years.

he is a hard tackler compared to Beauden :) but i doubt he is as quick as Beauden - did not see explosive pace off the mark , of the little i saw him at under 20 world cup.
