RATE THE TRADE: Brad Hill a Docker for pick 23

By Josh / Expert

Fremantle have secured Brad Hill, brother of current player Stephen Hill, giving the Hawks pick No.23, which they received just yesterday as compensation for the departure of free agent Chris Mayne.

“At 23-years of age, Bradley is an experienced premiership player with elite running and skill level,” said Fremantle’s list manager Brad Lloyd.

“We believe he will be a valuable acquisition to our playing list and be a long-term player for Fremantle.

“Bradley is really excited about returning home to WA and will relish the opportunity to play with Stephen.”

Hawks list manager Graham Wright explained the deal from a Hawthorn perspective:

“Bradley informed the club he had a strong desire to return to Western Australia and play with his brother at Fremantle.

“We have worked closely with his management and Fremantle to facilitate a deal that we feel benefits everyone involved.

“He has been a great servant to this club and leaves a triple premiership player.

“We would like to thank Bradley for his contribution to the Hawthorn Football Club and wish him all the best in the future.”

On the surface it looks like a pretty reasonable trade – while Hill might not be regarded as a genuine A-grader by many, he has plenty of speed and reasonable skills, two commodities the Dockers are in need of.

Pick 23 is a more than reasonable price to pay when you consider that Hill still has the best years of his career ahead of him, and can bring a wealth of premiership experience to the club.

Hawthorn also now have another valuable asset they can use in their quest to land Jaeger O’Meara – either offering the draft pick to the Suns, or trading it on to a third party in a larger deal.

Roarers, who do you think wins this trade? For every trade this off-season, we’re asking you to rate the trade – vote below, and we’ll release all the results at the end of trade period.

Email me. $500 minimum Freo to not make the 8 2017. You would be a mug to take that bet but you could turn around and say OK Freo might make the 8 but will never win with Ross Lyon coaching. I could get better odds at a bookie but would be happy for evens just to make you hate Freo that little bit more.

Very happy with Freo right now. Even If there was no trades or drafts we get Nat Fyfe and Harley Benell and Sandilands next year. If anyone thinks Freo not in the 8 next year I'm willing to take side bets(looking at you anon, money speaks louder than words of hatred).

I think Hawthorn and Freo should both be pretty happy.... Freo get Hill for Mayne big win!! 23 will help Hawks get O Meara or get a good youngster. Only ones that lose are Collingwood as they have a crab on a 4 year deal worth 2 million

I wouldn't take a ruckman at pick 7 - see Billy Longer, taken at 8. It's too much of a crapshoot and you can generally get 90% of the output from a much lesser draft pick.

Not sure about English at 7 but do we do need to be thinking about life after Sandilands,Clarke will fill the gap for a while. I'd prefer Petrosvki-seton as I think the best midfielders pick the taps of the ruck man most likely to win the tap regardless of whose side they're playing for. Kersten and Hamling I like because Ive heard they are best mates, throw in 2 brothers playing together and a promising forward who wanted to be close to home and I think Freo will have a good vibe within the team. Dont knock the 'vibe' look what It done for the Doggies this year.

Great stuff Freo! Now let's get Kersten, Hamling and Tim English with pick seven. After which; do not, do not, do not even think about putting Zac Dawson and Danyle Pearce in our best 22 for round one, two, three or any other round during 2017.

Yep. Lots of eastern staters will be impressed by Mayne. It's a good move for him because with all the quality returning from injury at Freo, the brilliant youth, the trades and the drafts, Mayne might have struggled for a regular game in purple next year. Ever the clubman, he provided a top compensation pick as a departing gift.

Trash? Chopper did a job week in week out. He was a fixture in a side that's enjoyed a fair amount of success over the past 5 years. If he didn't tick most of the boxes as far as his job description goes he would've been in the magoos with all those shots he butchered. His yips were added to by how much blood, sweat and tears he gives for us in the rest of the game.

I think the conversation with Freo and Hawks went something like "Mayne is going as a free agent and we reckon we'll get a second round compo for him, somewhere in the 20's. Once we get that we gie it to you for Hil ... ok?" ..."yair, fair 'nuff"

i thought pick 15-20 was fair for Hill, so 23 isnt that far off

I agree with Russ. He'll be good and Freo will make him better but we could have turned 23 into a better young gun. 34 would have got the deal done.

Overs? You must be kidding? 24 year old, durable, 3 time premiership player with exceptional pace and disposal - plenty of clubs would have coughed up more than Pick 23 if he was in an open market. Freo fans should be frothing particularly as that pick was a gimme from the AFL under faulty FA compo rules.
