The Fremantle Dockers will receive a second-round draft pick, currently pick No.23, as compensation for Mayne’s departure.

“We have been advised by the AFL that we will receive compensation pick 23, an early round two selection for Chris’ free agency move to Collingwood,” Lloyd said.

“We are of the view that this is fair compensation under the AFL’s formula, and will be useful in enhancing our trade or draft strategies.”

The Magpies have been the biggest players in the free agency market so far this off-season, with Mayne the second free agent to join them.

They signed North Melbourne’s Daniel Wells to a three-year contract on Tuesday.

“Chris, with his experience, nous, tackling temperament and nose for a goal can really help us in some important areas,” said Collingwood’s list manager Derek Hine.

“This year, Chris was the second best forward in the competition for pressure applied, was is in the top five per cent of forwards for average tackles at 5.4 a game and in the top 10 per cent of forwards for average marks at 5.0 a game.

“With these qualities, and his experience, we think he can really make an impact.”

Mayne said he was excited about the move.

“Collingwood is such a big, strong club, it has everything you need as a player facility wise… the players are getting the best opportunity to better themselves and come together as a unit to build something great and that’s what I want to do with my new team,” Mayne said.

“It’s a fresh start for me, it’s an opportunity I’ll definitely take with both hands… and I hope the fans and everyone involved in the club really embrace me and we build a connection for bigger and better things.”
