Schwab to depart Lions for AFL: reports

By News / Wire

Brisbane appear likely to lose respected list manager Peter Schwab to the AFL.

Schwab is reported to be on the verge of returning to the AFL to head up the umpiring department, a role vacated in March by Wayne Campbell.

The move would be a blow for the Lions who have made solid gains off the field recently with the appointments of Chris Fagan as new senior coach and David Noble as head of football.

“We are aware of the approach (from the AFL),” chief executive Greg Swann told News Corp Australia.

“Whilst we would be disappointed to lose Peter, we understand that it could be a good opportunity for him.

“We will wait and see what happens.”

Schwab, who coached at Hawthorn from 2000-04, joined Brisbane in 2013 and had previously held other roles at the AFL, including director of coaching and chief executive of AFL Victoria.

I think in AFL if you can show you know good processes the outcomes are irrelevant these days. Leppitsch didn't have any wait before he was snapped up for a job at Richmond again.

Random musing on Seano's post above. It's an interesting question whether Schwab or anyone else should be held responsible for the Lions' list. The Lions have had three list managers over the past decade - Allan, Kerr, and Schwab - each have been promoted into more senior roles elsewhere and yet Brisbane have wound up in this parlous state. So what's the problem with list management if the list managers are generally seen as doing a good job?

As Tom said above he wasn't really to blame, Rob Kerr had 4 years from 2010-2014 in the gig and didn't cover himself in glory

He didn't have a lot to work with.

Presiding over the worst list ever is hardly something To hang your hat on. Lions will be better off without him.

I had thought Schwab was looking to head back to Melbourne anyway - not sure where I'd heard it though. So it might have been inevitable he was leaving, it was just a question of where. Very important that the Lions get a good replacement list manager. Unfortunately the last guy the AFL suggested to us for that role - Rob Kerr - was something of a failure.

Yeah mate, I know it's a great opportunity for him but it would be good if the AFL just waited a little while before they went in and poached people!

Hope it doesn't hurt. Would be nice if the AFL didn't go head hunting at a club it's just helped. Let's hope whomever replaces him is the right person.

Pretty much - no great loss if he does leave, we can get someone else in. As you say the list has already been pruned right back and there aren't too many passengers left.

Not what the Lions need, although I suppose most (but not all) of the foundations for a rejuvenated list have already been laid?
