World All Stars holding back the contest

By Andréa Mandadakis / Roar Guru

Each year the All Stars concept comes under fire. There is one clear way to resurrect the contest – scrapping the World All Stars.

The idea of having a team filled with the best of the best to take on a team filled with Indigenous talent is a mouthwatering concept, however it just doesn’t work.

Each year an NRL or World All Stars team is named to take on the Indigenous All Stars, and each year we see half of the team pulling out because of injury concerns that are usually just thrown around to keep players wrapped in cotton wool.

This not only shows disrespect to their opposition, many of which call this event one of the proudest moments of their careers, but also to the fans.

I travelled three arduous hours by train to get to Newcastle from Sydney to see the best of the best, but I ended up seeing the best of the rest.

I don’t want to name names, but some of the players named in the World All Stars side struggled to make the NRL last season.

Because of this embarrassment of a team, I believe the Indigenous opposition should be rotated between national sides.

I really like the idea of the Indigenous team playing against Samoa, Tonga, Fiji or Papua New Guinea.

Not only would we see two teams come together to celebrate the great cultures of our game, but we’d also see two competitive teams with cohesion and understanding of one another.

This would also allow said nations to get more practice with each other.

I have no doubt the games would sell out also.

I’m sure coaches and fans would be more willing to see their players play for their nation than for an ugly amalgamation of a team.

There is need to define the contest along racial lines and exclude players of European / Middle Eastern heritage. The key is to select an NRL All Stars team with real stars, and not get too carried away with trying to maximize the heritage footprint. Its true that the Indigenous team have more motivation, but that shouldn't matter if the NRL All Stars are truly the best non-aboriginal players in the NRL.

Agree with that James the fans should be voting on the All Stars team as it was before.

I personally liked it better when it was the NRL All stars and fans got to vote on the team, I wonder if its to late to change it back or atleast give fans some form of voting process

not quite sure what Gus was talking about saying the Indigenous side should be a standalone side and also play in the world cup as the indigenous side - so that means none of the indigenous players could play for NSW/QLD or Australia in that case or do we have an Indigenous state of origin as well?- it's only 4-3 at the moment and it wont be played next year because of the WC so no need to change the concept of it as a one off game,

Because the NRL Allstars team used to be filled with rep players. Starting Origin players often were coming off the bench. Some of the guys in this years team will struggle to make their club sides this year.

How could you call this team a World All Stars team, half of them won't be starters in their NRL team, when it was called the NRL All Stars & the fans got to pick their player from each team it seemed to work better.

There have been 7 of these All Star games with the Indigenous team winning 4 and the opposition 3. How is this a lopsided uneven contest that should be dispensed with???

Have an indigenous side vs NZ Maori or PNG on stand alone State of origin weekend. Even if it's a weakened indigenous side so be it. I'd like to see a game of NZ vs Pacific Island All-stars played on state of origin night. Play it at 5.30pm Australian time(7.30pm NZ time) at somewhere like Mt Smart Stadium, it would be awesome game and good hit out for kiwis to develop combinations and for NZRL to make some cash.

Early on the World All Stars used to be called NRL All Stars had a gun team. Lockyer, Marshall, Smith and all the best forwards in the game played. In this years team the only current origin or test player is Gavin Cooper. There's also Jake Friend and a few blokes either on the fringe or who played rep footy a while ago. Beale, Uate, Matautia. Back in 2010 every one of the 20 players to play for the NRL All Stars team had played for their state of country. Being now that we have the nines and WCC I can't see it going back to the way it was. Playing against a Pacific Island Nation is probably the best bet.

I agree AM, the Indigenous All Stars need to play an opponent which will add meaning to the fixture. I'd stick to the All Stars theme by adding a combined P.I. team. Imagine this team lining up: 1. David Mead (Broncos/PNG), 2. Jordan Rapana (Raiders/Cook Islands), 3. Justin O'Neill (Cowboys/Vanuatu), 4. Joseph Leilua (Raiders/Samoa), 5. Suliasi Vunivalu (Storm/Fiji), 6. Anthony Milford (Broncos/Samoa), 7. Tuimoala Lolohea (Warriors/Tonga), 8. Dylan Napa (Roosters/Cook Islands), 9. Apisai Koroisau (Sea Eagles/Fiji), 10. Reagan Campbell-Gillard (Panthers/Fiji), 11. Sauaso Sue (Wests Tigers/Samoa), 12. Agnatius Paasi (Titans/Tonga), 13. Tepai Moeroa (Eels/Cook Islands) 14. Sam Kasiano (Bulldogs/Samoa), 15. Toafofoa Sipley (Warriors/Niue), 16. Jacob Saifiti (Knights/Fiji), 17. Tony Williams (Sharks/Tonga), 18. Ray Thompson (Cowboys/PNG), 19. Nene Macdonald (Dragons/PNG), 20. Dane Nielsen (Rabbitohs/Solomon Islands)

I agree with JTs idea, an indigineous round where all games are played at two venues, Suncorp and ANZ.

I think the All Stars concept is good as long as the 'stars' come out to play. I think they opted for up and comers this year, not entirely a bad thing but they were no match for the Indigenous boys. I don't agree they should play in the World Cup as a separate team from the Australian team. That would just be divisive. What would happen to an indigenous player if he decided to play for the Australian team instead of Indigenous or vice versa. That would just end up being more divisive and political than it needs to be. Worst case scenario make them play an Islander/Kiwi team. I think a team like that will play with much more passion and also be far more entertaining and match the style of play that the Indigenous boys put up last night.

The 'A.R.L' was the old governing body of rugby league in Australia. The ARL Commission is the present day governing body. The RLIF organises the Rugby League World Cup and subsequent competitions.

The Australian Indigenous team is now strong enough to play against the best teams in the world. In the past they lacked a dominant forward pack. Not any more though. This mob could go it alone. Imagine them competing against the best Australian, NZ, and English teams in a four nations styled tournament. She'd be a cracker. The Boomerang's (or Boomers) would be a fitting name for the squad.

AFL don't have this game. The NRL media and coaches will see off this game soon enough. A diverse season calendar will be gone soon. It will be NRL games and nothing else. Not even Origin once NSW win 2 years in a row.
