Selwood booked for speeding, Cats to discuss potential penalty

By The Roar / Editor

Geelong captain Joel Selwood was been booked for speeding on Friday afternoon, and will lose his license for a month after going 127km per hour in a 100km per hour zone.

Geelong’s management will convene during the week to discuss a potential in-club penalty for Selwood.

Geelong’s acting CEO Justin Reeves said:

“Joel and the club are disappointed in his actions. Joel informed the club immediately of the issue and the club has since updated its key stakeholders.

“Everyone associated with the club takes road safety very seriously, and knows that speeding is unacceptable and can cause accidents. Fortunately these actions did not result in an accident.

“The club has a long standing relationship with the TAC and the parties will meet this week to further discuss the matter. Our club is a huge supporter of Victoria’s Towards Zero mission and we work closely with the TAC to ensure every player understands how they can contribute, both in a leadership sense and in the way they use the roads. Every player understands the link between speed and deaths and injuries so we share the TAC’s disappointment at these actions.”

Your last paragraph is exactly the point. Your first paragraph is a fanciful reading.

Sure Don, this is not unsafe… in fact he should drive even faster. If you drive at twice the speed limit you will get there in half the time and halve the crash exposure time. It is simple risk management really. That said, I don't think he should get an additional penalty from the club or the league. Do we get another punishment from our employer if we get pinged for speeding?

If it were insignificant, he wouldn't be losing his licence for a month. That's the sort of punishment anyone should expect. I don't see, in this particular instance, why further punishment should be piled on. It seems an adequate response to me. Drink driving, drugged driving, spousal assault, these are all things that warrant additional penalties by the club.. Speeding, not so much.

Although, Cat, it is hardly significant. So let me be the first to say it is insignificant.

I'm with Mick. Modern cars...27kph over a 100kph is not even dangerous. Very controllable. The speed limit is the result of a bureaucratic stroke of a pen still based on the vehicle performance in the 1970s. You could never accuse Joel Selwood of bringing footy into disrepute. You'd struggle to find a more solid citizen.

Who said it's 'insignificant'? That's right ... no one.

I guess if it's insignificant it wouldn't matter if everybody did the same thing

He was booked and fined, so didn't get away with anything. If you're genuinely outraged by something like this I really wonder how you react when something actually bad happens in the world.

Settle down mate, it's a speeding ticket. He's hardly Ivan Milat. Or Ben Cousins. I thought this had to be a joke story. Lifted straight out of the Betoota Advocate. Those quotes from the CEO are a sad indictment on today's society.

An AFL Captain is a position where higher standards are expected. They are supposed to be examples to their team-mates, their club supporters and in particular, youth in general. If any AFL Captain is not prepared to be that example and the pressure that comes with it, then don't take the position. When community role-models disrespect the law in the way that Selwood has, then he should be stood down as captain. His reckless action was a potentially dangerous, life-threatening action, and should not just be swept under the carpet. Every time some "famous" person is seen to get away with such reckless behaviour, it makes it easier for others to think they can do it and get away with it, and that's the responsibility, whether we like it or not, that sits on the shoulders of role models. It would be better if he stood himself down, and apologised to the club, his team-mates, his supporters and the general community.
