TELL US: Should the AFL introduce a twilight grand final?

By Benjamin Conkey / Editor

Roar LIVE this week will be all about AFL as we discuss the burning issues ahead of Round 1.

We want to hear from you about your predictions on which teams will win, which teams will suck and whether social media will finally get over the obsession with ‘free kick Hawthorn.’

We’ll also be discussing the Western Bulldogs’ fortunes for 2017 and whether they can go back-to-back.

Should the AFL Introduce a twilight grand final?

This topic has generated plenty of debate this week. You’re either in the traditionalist or get with the times camp.

Either way if the proposed twilight game goes ahead it will change grand final ‘day’ forever.

The Roar LIVE crew will be joined by 2UE’s Mike Gibbons on Wednesday morning to sink our teeth into the first round of AFL.

Roar Live will be streamed Wednesday morning on The Roar’s Facebook page. It will also be available as a podcast on Soundcloud and iTunes.

Or alternatively, it's his name and hence a noun!

Whatevs dude. Stretch your argument in whatever direction you think will work for you. Don't get stroppy when we point out the stupid ones you take though.

Enough Already- I really don't need any of your childish BS. The fact is that the later timeslot is not about football, it's about the money that Gil and Co will make from it.

Reservoir Animal - Tell us which team your beloved parents follow, then if/when that team next makes a GF we can stop the league and ask the old dears what time they would like it to be played as to best fit into their bedtime routine. Anything else the league should stop changing because it doesn't suit your parents? If your parents are that frail that a once yearly 8 o'clock bedtime is beyond reach, the excitement of watching their team in a GF isn't going to do much for their wellbeing either. Its one day a year. Kids and oldies can manage one late (ish) night a year if it means more people get to enjoy the game. Or even if it means the game becomes more enjoyable to those who already watch it.

If footy is so much better when played in the middle of the day, why is Friday Night Football the AFL premier timeslot in the fixture for the rest of the year?

The NRL went in this direction some years ago and many are not happy. There it was done to suit channel 9 and their advertisers and as a lead in to 60 Minutes. Not in the interests of the fans. The GF is a community event and the lunch time BBQ is a tradition. Going to twilight just makes the day so long and twilight is not a good time for either players or spectators to see the ball. It also makes the night long for families who take their kids to the GF. It also doesn't suit the fans of the winning team who like to make the parties last longer.

Thank you Glen. There is a reason why the AFL GF is bigger than the NRL GF and that is because it is played at a time when everybody is awake.

"What I would like to see (and we know it won’t happen) is for the AFL to consult outside of its own insular world (AFL commission, players, clubs, coaches) and actually try to engage with fans on this." They did just that. And they've refused to release the survey results, presumably because those results go against their corporate-driven agenda.

"MORE people will watch the game." Yes, for one day per year. Then they'll forget about the game again.

"It’s not insulting your parents." Yes it is. You're saying it's none of their business to watch their beloved team win one more flag. All because the 0.01% in the corporate sector managed to suck GilMac in. Grand Final Day is the biggest day on the Australian sporting calendar and has been for decades. GilMac's decision to change it isn't about fixing something that's broken, it's about him buddying up to his corporate mates and to hell with any consequences.

The BBL has been a big hit with families and most of those matches start at 7:00pm and finish 10:30pm. Some children will miss out on the Grand Final if they're not allowed to stay awake past 6:30pm. Same for old people that need to be tucked in early. Tough luck. AFL Grand Finals have no real significance to a 3 or 4 year old anyway.

North would've won in '98 with a twilight/night GF.......they had to be re-introduced to the red sherrin on GF day......couldn't hit it right kicking at goal.

just to reiterate an earlier point, the lead in finals are almost all played at night. There was a time when "tradition" had all the finals played during the day, but that changed. This is hardly a code killer, and MORE people will watch the game. Amateur and state comps still have their finals in the arvo... grass roots footy would love your support if you are needing a daylight footy fix.

How's this, then? AFL is supported by families, some of whom have children below the age of 12, for whom a bed time if attending a match is simply too late. Add in the exorbitant price of a ticket, the ease of watching it at home over going, and the fact that, for whatever reason, sports that occur at night feel the need to create spectacles of themselves (fireworks, cheerleaders, ridiculous crowd gee-ups; as though the match itself wasn't worth going for). Here's an idea; how about we keep the family friendly time slot, largely because it serves the largest group of fans out there; children, who grow up to buy memberships based on love of a club they chose when they were small.

I agree with that, has to be a twilight game I live in WA. Having missed out on 4 of the last 11 GF because of work I would be happy with the later arvo game. That might be selfish on my part I admit. As I have stated on another thread if the AFL can prove the clear majority of fans are happy for the change then go for it. They will never be able to keep everyone happy but you need to try new things.

It's inevitable, it's a done deal. And I have no problem with it. During the regular season, more footy is played with a yellow ball than a red one. During the finals especially so. The TV ratings suggest more will watch. It opens up our showpiece game to more viewers. That is surely a good thing. I'll watch a Grand Final at any time. I'll go at any time if I can get a ticket. Especially if the Giants make it. Bring it on!
