Three MCG blockbusters have helped the AFL smash the record by almost 30,000 for a single-round attendance.
A total of 400,401 attended round one, easily passing the previous record of 371,212 set in round 15, 2013.
Essendon’s shock win over Hawthorn drew the biggest crowd, with 78,294 witnessing the match at the MCG.
Richmond’s season-opening win over Carlton (73,137) and the Bulldogs’ win over Collingwood (66,254) also played crucial roles in setting the new record.
The lowest attendance of the round came at Metricon Stadium, where only 12,710 rocked up to see Brisbane pip Gold Coast.

Only Tottingham, Chelsea, CP (just, as their capacity is only 26k) West Ham and Arsenal would get 25k crowds and maybe Fullham for finals - definitely not 12

The most interesting fact I find about the crowd figures was the discussion on Monday night during channel sevens talking footy program. Sam McClure brought up the fact that the crowd at Metricon was closer to a few thousand rather than 13 thousand, and they did show images of the ground looking rather empty. Must have been lots in the toilets I guess.(All four commentators had a chuckle about it).. Wonder if just a little is added in this sense to a few other games ? The other fact I have noticed is that the AFL rages on about these massive crowds, wonderfull and fabulous must be making the game grow massively. Not just in our great country but the entire world. Congartulations on the massive crowds not sure it is making the game any bigger from an expansion pespective It seems to be the AFLs greatest stated fact (I wonder if it would be so large if everyone played each other twice and there was a promotion and relegation system as per some other leagues compared above). Never the less lets keep going. The real figure in my humble opinion (and I am sure you will all say I am a fool) that will make a difference in how massive a sport is are FTA TV numbers. I did not see any ratings I assume if the crowds were so mamoth the TV ratings were in the millions per game. Anyone that can confirm ? .

Far enough, alls fair. Theres a few clubs that play at suburban grounds every now and then but for most games they play at the extablished stadiums. Rabbitohs, Bulldogs, Tigers & Eels consider ANZ their main stadium for this year. Dragons also play 2 home games there. Roosters play out of Allianz. Dragons play at a few other stadiums as do the Tigers and Dogs

Actually it's one extra game, Dan, not 2! The 2 new clubs (Giants & Suns) wouid average 13,000 - so for 8 rounds last week the AFL would have got 385,000. Still highest ever attendance.

No world city has 9 major league clubs. Nor is there a city that would have 6 of those clubs playing before over 65,000 3 nights in a row at 1 stadium. Melbourne is unique on that score

It is an interesting question and one that no doubt the AFL are analysing.

AFL could average bigger crowds too if they selectively only chose the biggest clubs like you just did.

A 100k stadium in Perth? They will struggle to regularly fill the 60k stadium.

I think Tottenham Chelsea and arsenal could easily match those figures plus the 12 other London clubs that get 25000 crowds 2 Manchester clubs get 70000 with Liverpool 10 km down the road get 50000 Agree. NRL crowds are terrible, but so are the gws Giants crowds

I reckon it's a wait and see, IMO not building the stadium to 100K will bite em in the ass further down the track

^^^^^^^^^ Like rugby unions apparent loss of 65 percent of registered players since 2001. (Actually that is true)

Don't think the inclusion of GWS and Suns has added much to the attendance each week.

I wasn't being condescending, NQC. Your comment gave the impression that on the weekend the NRL games were played in massive stadiums. ANZ is the only Sydney stadium that couid be described as massive, like the MCG. Allianz & Lang Park hold about 50,000 - similar to Docklands, SCG, Subiaco & Adelaide Oval. 50,000 is okay - but hardly massive. Only 2 NRL clubs play at ANZ, I think. All the others play at much smaller grounds. There are 7 Sydney suburban grounds that hold under 25,000. I don't think they measure up to what we expect of a stadium.

You pay someone a compliment and they have to be arrogant. Interesting fan base.

Most games are played at ANZ and Allianz which are 80k and 45k capacity stadiums. Kogarah and Leichardt get 3-4 games/year. Brookvale gets 12 games. Also no need to be condescending about it.
