After many lean years, there’s a real sense of optimism around the Demons right now.

They narrowly missed the finals last season and are expected to improve in 2017. A convincing win against St Kilda last week seemed to justify a lot of the confidence some observers have in them.

But the reality of their 2016 season was that for every really impressive performance that seemed to indicate a permanent improvement, there’d be a disappointing loss to a low ranked team that would set them back again.

Probably the most notable of these disappointments was against today’s opposition in Carlton.

In round 22 of last season Melbourne were coming off strong wins against Hawthorn and Port Adelaide and appeared to have a real shot at sneaking into the eight.

But a strangely tepid display against the Blues effectively ended their season with a whimper.

It goes without saying that developing teams are usually inconsistent. But at some point they have to reach a stage where they win the games they should do, and that’s been a problem for the Demons.

If Melbourne are to play finals this year, they need to hold their nerve and win these games.

There’s plenty on the line for Carlton as well.

While they’re not expected to push for September action this season, they would surely want to show real improvement over last year.

They weren’t especially impressive in round one against the Tigers, losing by 43 points, but there were certainly some good patches. And some encouraging individual displays by the likes of Lachie Plowman, Caleb Marchbank and first gamer Sam Petrevski-Seton.

At selection, Carlton coach Brendan Bolton has decided to try and build on that first up effort, naming an unchanged lineup. It’s not often you see that after a seven-goal loss.

For the Dees, Dom Tyson comes in for his first game of the season, as does James Harmes. They replace Bernie Vince who was suspended in round one, and Joel Smith who injured his shoulder.

Prediction
Melbourne are strong favourites, and for good reason. In every part of the ground they look superior to the Blues. While they still rely a little too much on some inconsistent youngsters that’s even more the case for Carlton. The Demons simply have more quality and attacking weapons.

Melbourne by 40 points.

Macca, yes was pretty impressed with MacReadie today, took some gutsy marks. Did not think he was in the frame for selection last week, maybe Bolton and crew do know what they are doing despite certain doubters on this site. Pickett and Samo are both a work in progress but liked what I have seen so far of both. Building so solid foundations IMO, might not win many games this year but things are improving.

Col, yeah I normally a fan of Armfield, but he's had a bad start to the year, maybe he concentrated to much coaching the WFAL side and his minds not on the job. Already started looking to his post footy career maybe. Can't blame him, he's only human after all. At least we do have some options who can play that role if Bolton does decide to drop him. As always, watch the team announcement with interest.

Brinxx, Armfield has been poor in both games. He doesn't seem to be able to run to the right spot and decision making has been poor. I think he needs to make way for either Cunningham or Buckley. The youngsters showed good signs again today and the more game time they get will bring consistency into their game.

Brinnx - I really liked MacReadie today, minimal mistakes and some pretty impressive moments. I thought SPS and Pickett showed something as well. A lot to like about today.

I felt the game did not reach any great heights, but at least both sides can be pretty happy with how their defence stood up. I hope Lewis gets rubbed out for his late hit on Cripps, just goes to show the threat he posed as the game went on I guess. Hats off to the Blues coaching staff for holding their nerve and making no changes for last week team. White and Armfield made shocking clangers in the 1st qtr - but got better as the game went on. Ditto for Daisy. An honourable loss, with a couple of personal milestones out of the way, Pickett and SPS kicking their 1st goals. Green Shoots - I saw a few, McCredie took a couple of good marks and showed some intent, and there were others. Hope they bring the same intent against the bombers next week.

2 votes for Cripps imagine what he could do if the blues weren't making him play through injury, hey Cat?

» Click here to read the full match report Votes One thing to make clear: ignore possession counts for games like these. There were a bunch of players with a stack of low quality disposals. 3. Nathan Jones (Melbourne) - For years he has been Melbourne's key man in difficult games, and so it was again today. By far the most effective of the Demon midfielders, and involved in several key moments, including two important goals. He also had 29 possessions and 8 inside 50s. 2. Patrick Cripps (Carlton) - He was the man winning the ball and driving Carlton forward, particularly in that third quarter when they got on top. With ten clearances he was clearly the game's best inside player. 1. Matthew Wright (Carlton) - Wright made solid contributions all around the ground for the entire day, and used the ball better than most other players. But it was his three goals that stand out. Not just because he kicked them, but because each of them were his own creations formed almost out of nothing. On a day when both sides struggled to kick goals his quality in the forwardline stood out. Gawn, Salem, Oliver and Murphy all very close.

It was close for the most part, but low quality. I feel for you, AD. Growing up a Fitzroy fan I had many sad afternoons watching my team nine goals down at half time with the crowd against them.

Match report The Melbourne Demons have held off a determined effort by Carlton to record a 22 point win at the MCG this afternoon. Melbourne started the game strongly, kicking the opening goal and dominating possession, but despite threatening to break the game open couldn't quite shake off the Blues. After a low scoring first half more or less dominated by the Demons they held a narrow ten point lead at the main break. Perhaps sensing the opportunity, Carlton played their best footy in the third quarter, getting on top around the ground and forcing the Demons into mistakes. Patrick Cripps and Marc Murphy found plenty of the ball in the midfield, and while they never really had a threatening key forward, the Blues converted enough of their chances to get out to a nine point lead. The Demons kicked the last of the quarter to bring the margin back to three points heading into the final period of the game. After a few cagey minutes of the last term, highlighted by some excellent individual defensive efforts on both sides, Melbourne gradually got on top to pull away from the Blues. The Demons began to attack the dangerous area in front of goal, and while they still struggled to take contested marks, they were repeatedly able to kick important crumbing goals in the key final moments. Although Casboult kicked a late major to give the Blues a sniff, the Demons certainly ran the game out more strongly and deserved their win in the end. Over the course of the game, Melbourne had by far the most of the ball with 64 more touches, and youngsters Dom Tyson, Christian Salem, Clayton Oliver all finished with 30 plus possessions. But each of those players was guilty of some sloppy ball use, and the Demons probably would have been better off with some of their more experienced players getting more of the pill; Jordan Lewis was well held and had little influence. Nathan Jones, however, was as inspirational as ever, and executed some key plays at times. Overall, Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin, although obviously happy with the win, would have to be a little concerned with the overall performance. They didn't particularly look like prospective finalists today. They were keen to move the ball through the wings, but were generally too slow to switch effectively and often went wide into the forwardline, making it hard to generate quality scoring chances. Carlton, who are likely to have lower expectations for the season, could certainly find some positives in their defensive work. Marchbank and Plowman were once again effective as young defenders. They too though suffered from poor ball use throughout the match. As usual, they lacked a sharp edge in front of goal, but Matthew Wright kicked three sensational goals to keep them in the game. To be blunt, this wasn't a game that will live long in the memory. Melbourne got the win they should have done, but made hard work of it.

Seemed like a good game, am I right Tom? The game I'm at right now though... well, I'm questioning why I'm here.

If we had cut to the coach's box every time there was a mistake in this game, we would see none of the play. It has not been a classic.

No matter how unconvincing they've been today, Melbourne will start the season 2-0, and at the very least they can say they're winning these sorts of games, even if they're not producing their best footy.

This game is winding down now, with 2 minutes left and the Dees leading by sixteen points. Carlton don't seem to be playing with much intent at this stage.

Oh my god, Brian Taylor just called Plowman 'Rowe'. They look nothing alike. How can anyone make that sort of mistake. It's appalling we have to put up with him calling games.

Just got home from cricket & tuned in to watch the last quarter. Tense game! Entertaining. Not sure if I'm a huge fan of channel 7 cutting to Bolton live up in the box every time Carlton make a mistake though
