Final score
Carlton Blues 7.15.57
Essendon Bombers 6.6.42
After a valiant performance kast week, the Carlton Blues meet a red-hot Essendon Bombers looking to add to their perfect start with a third straight win. Join The Roar from 3pm (AEST) for live scores and commentary.
The Bombers have hit the ground running in 2017. An ardour-driven victory was backed up last week against Brisbane, despite a late scare.
Essendon led by 42 points late in the second term before the Lions came storming home to hit the front early in the last quarter. The Bombers were able to prove that their Round 1 triumph was no fluke, surviving this scare to claim the four points.
The Bombers have the chance to go 3-0 for the first time since 2013, when they were controversially ruled out of the finals series.
There is real excitement among Bombers fans, who would love nothing more than to clinch a victory over their bitter rivals.
On the other end of the spectrum, Carlton are yet to claim victory in season 2017.
The Blues played some impressive footy last weekend against a genuine contender in Melbourne, sticking with the Demons for much of the match before eventually being overrun. Marc Murphy continued to lead from the front, gathering over 30 disposals for the second time this season.
The last time these two sides met was in the last round of 2016, when the Bombers won just their third game of the season, defeating the Blues by 24 points.
History is on the side of the Bombers, having only lost once in their last five meetings.
For Essendon, Matthew Leuenberger, Heath Hocking, Mitch Brown, Matt Dea and James Stewart all make their way into the side that beat Brisbane last week. Ben Howlett misses the contest due to injury, while Michael Hartley has been omitted.
Carlton meanwhile have Harry McKay and Tom Williamson in the line up to make their AFL debuts, while Rhys Palmer has also been named for his first match as a Blue. Sam Kerridge is the fourth inclusion, with the only player omitted being Dennis Armfield.
The headlines have quickly shifted from Essendon’s returning stars to the emergence of their newest superstar Zach Merrett.
After an impressive 2016, Merrett has stolen the show this season with two monstrous performances. The 21-year-old currently leads the competition in kicks and is ranked fourth in disposals, averaging 34.5 touches in his opening two games.
Prediction
It’s hard to tip against the Bombers in this one, but the Blues will certainly give them a run for their money.
Essendon by 25 points.

Col, I think Essendon had to play Leuenberger. McKernan did pretty well in the first two rounds when Leuenberger and Bellchambers were unavailable, but he is more a forward/ruck. The game against Brisbane the previous week nearly turned in the third quarter when McKernan became uncompetitive with Martin and Kreuzer would be comparable with Martin. I feel sorry for McKernan as he is Essendon's third ruckman but in several other sides he would get a game as a ruck/forward assisting the main ruckman -- he just doesn't fit into Essendon's side in that way.

Aransan, there were actually seven players who celebrated their first win in a Carlton jumper so it was a big inner circle. It was a good win by the Blues who I think we're favoured by the wet conditions more than Essendon. On reflection I think Essendon would have been better off by having McKernan in the side instead of Leunberger. Although he probably won the hit outs the conditions negated any advantage and I thought Kreuzer was much more effective in general play. McKernan certainly has more mobility than Leunberger and would have been better around the ground for the Bombers. As usual in a Carlton v Essendon game the underdog got the win.

Well done Carlton, they were clearly the better team in the conditions. If I were a Carlton supporter with Foxtel I would be very unhappy with their coverage of the game. The victory song in the rooms must have been something special with five players including Jack Silvagni playing in their first winning game.

Yeah Colton would think being too heavy in those conditions would have been a negative and Thirty five possessions and nine tackles is a decent day out for a bloke who doesn't want to be there. On further positives, Graham got thirty seven in the twos yesterday, Polso got twenty eight and Cuningham got twenty, plenty of pressure for spots.

Not bad for a top heavy side in wet conditions and just imagine how better Gibbs would be if he wanted to stay at the Blues.

Col- Plowman was once again sensational, he looks more and more like the top 10 pick he was, I think Williamson was terrific for a first gamer in difficult conditions, hard to see how he slipped to 61, and SPS took another step forward, he will get a rising star nomination before round 11 - a lot to like and the future looks bright.

Cat - not sure why you think that, I have never been critical of the dogs, quite the opposite, and Mattyb will disappear until the blues lose again in past history is anything to go by.

I didn't, no. To be fair you can't blame me for my pessimism, haha! Very glad I was proven wrong though.

Seven players 20 years or younger (5 teenagers) showed that Carltons future is going to get better. The defense were great today with Plowman the best of them. Great games from Marchbank, Docherty,,Simpson and Rowe. Williamson showed he can handle senior footy as did Macreadie. Great games from Murphy, Cripps, Gibbs and Kreuzer and Petrevski-Seton and Pickett continue to improve and impress.
