The good life of Rugby Tragic

By Harry Jones / Expert

While a hundred young lads bitch and moan about the format of Super Rugby, a Roar stalwart with a dodgy hip and a zest for life, eats and drinks it all up and begs for more.

We know him as Rugby Tragic.

In real life, he’s the bionic man, a bon vivant, a tale for every city, an intrepid traveler who just will not quit, and he is coming to a Super Rugby or SANZAAR city near you, soon.

Where do I start?

A childhood spent fighting, boxing, playing for respect? Being the ‘other’? Or an adulthood of service to the best and brightest; accounting for their capital and saving them from loss?

Golden years of heroic resistance to the loss of various areas of health? Climbing three flights of stairs to drink a pint with Roarers, scaling Kings Park’s lofty stadium to see his beloved All Blacks whip the Boks in Durban, venturing to Singapore to behold the Sunwolves make the Stormers work hard for the win, or committing to every possible sighting of his Blues, as they put the ‘Tragic’ in his name?

He has the energy of Aaron Smith, the smarts of Ben Smith, the pain threshold of Schalk Burger, the happy heart of Israel Dagg, his brain works as fast as Michael Hooper’s feet and he offloads comments on The Roar like Sonny Bill Williams dumps sponsors.

What’s the reason for Super Rugby? For SANZAAR? For rugby in general?

Look no further than Rugby Tragic, who suffers with his Auckland team, exalts with his New Zealand stars, and will go anywhere on this earth to see a rugby match, good, bad, or ugly.

Let’s slow down on the whingeing, and emulate our senior star: the indestructible, maniacally loyal, and forever optimistic Rugby Tragic.

You're not wrong there RT. Both Blues and Tahs can look in the mirror and question their attitude at times. Both teams have pretty much shot themselves in the foot. Mind you if the Blues were say The NSW Armidale Blues, I suspect they would all be smiling and miles ahead in their conference table. Apart from tonight, I'll be barracking for dem Blues from over the ditch. :)

Wow Harry. A beautiful little piece this one. And congrats to RT, pretty cool to be featured in a Harry Jones-column. And for what it is worth, RT is a class act and to talk rugby with him is always a pleasure.

Thugby, firstly thanks, really not warranted... that damn Harry embarrasses me. Now for the more serious stuff ... In reality, the Blues have made it very difficult for themselves regardless of the final points tally, they need to climb over the NZ side ahead of them as only 4 side under the present system can make it ... Without wishing ill of the Highlanders, it will require a seismic shift in the rugby fortunes of Tana's guys and 'that kilt wearing mob' based in Dunedin, - but hope springs eternal! We are 6 points adrift of the Highlanders who in turn trail the 'other three' in the NZ conference. All the Blues can do is control what they are able to, that is to continue to win well and with BP's the 'Landers are a very good and often under rated side who need to drop a game before they need to start looking in the rear vision mirror ... Regretfully this anguishing position is one of the Blues own making with the inability to get over a single NZ opponent with one to go (the Chiefs at Eden Park). The Blues have a perfect record this year against NZ teams .. played 5, lost 5 ... a bit like my boxing at school, zero from 2! The Blues and Auks before them are a proud mob, sure we have had a hiccup or two over the past 13 or so years ... a long time, that's life, but in the indelible words of General McArthur..... "We will be back!"
