Time for the media to stop asking Cooper Cronk that question

By David Lord / Expert

The media should have worked out by now that Cooper Cronk is his own man.

He’s never going to be bullied into answering any question he doesn’t want to, especially that question on his footballing future.

From the moment the 33-year-old champion halfback dropped his bombshell he was pulling the coat on the Melbourne Storm to move to Sydney to be close to his wife-to-be Tara Rushton, he’s been bombarded by the question.

The veteran of 311 Games for the Storm, 19 Origins, 33 Test caps and still counting, has three options – retire, pick a Sydney club to continue, or switch to rugby, with the World Cup just two years away.

The decision looks like falling is in that order, with Steve Crawley the pivotal man.

For the last two decades, Crawley has been building high quality commentators on television.

The bulk of those 20 years were with Channel Nine where his team of commentators were the length of the straight ahead of the rest of the free-to-air channels.

These days Crawley, renowned as the best judge of media flesh, is doing the same at Fox with a galaxy of stars, and Cronk would be a prize signature.

He’s articulate, with a deep knowledge of what makes rugby league tick, on and off the field. He’s a television natural.

And it would not only be a long and rewarding career, but his future wife is a top class presenter of the round-ball sport.

The Cronks would be on a level playing field – a nice touch.

Retirement would overcome any problems Cronk might face playing without Cameron Smith and Billy Slater – three of the best to ever strap on boots – and close friends.

That leaves rugby. In a selfish way I was rather hoping Crock would switch.

For 50 years I’ve been waiting for another Ken Catchpole, without peer as the greatest rugby halfback I’ve ever seen.

And I’ve waited 25 years for another legendary Wallaby half like Nick Farr-Jones.

I reckon Cooper Crock would be in that bracket if he switched, and the Wallabies could win the 2019 Rugby World Cup with Crock proudly wearing the No 9 jersey.

That’s all a dream.

So instead of watching Cooper Cronk at Twickenham, Stade de France, Ellis Park, and Eden Park, I, like countless thousands, will turn to Fox to see an Immortal-in-waiting strut his stuff on rugby league.

His television talent will be as good as watching him play – only for longer.

Congrats on your double thousand, David. Being a statistician, I have worked out that 2003 articles since 2011 (6 years) in Roar makes it 334 stories a year. Phenomenal! I lay far far behind; a meagre 394 in 8 years which makes it 49 stories a year. Who is next to David Lordy? Bet it is Spiro Zavos (1231 stories in 11 years at 112 a year).

How could you think he would play halfback in union. You do know they aren't the same in both codes, right?

That would be mouth watering if Smith went with him. Smith retains the 9 and Cronk at 10 for the Wallabies. Just teach Smith how to feed a scrum and spot penalties and to tackle less. They've already played along side Falou before. I hope we see Cronk go around for a few more. Professionalism personified and would make any team he wanted his own.

Cronk at 9 over 10 is pure insanity.

Spot on fellas. Cam Smith is the 9 that DL is seeking. Cronk would have played 10. If the Panthers can go after Cronk then they certainly have some creative accounting going on. All their stars are locked up til 2020/21 and yet they still announce big signings each year (Merrin, Tamou et al). Of course it isn't helping their ladder position......

Good thinking Joe and The Barry, for rugby league with Cooper Cronk very capable of filling both roles like Johnathan Thurston. But for mine Cronk is a rugby half, with Bernard Foley at 10, 11- Reece Hodge, 12- Kurtley Beale, 13 - Israel Folau, 14 - Taqele Naiyaravoro, and 15 - Dane Haylett-Petty. Then it's up to Michael Cheika to select a big mobile pack to deliver that backline quick controlled possession, and let the tries pile up. Sadly, it ain't gonna happen.

Yeah definitely Joe. League halves are first receivers - the equivalent of a rugby fly half. Rugby halfbacks are more akin to leagues hookers in that they're first to handle the ball from the base of the ruck and have to pass from the ground, kick quickly and under pressure. The media won't stop asking the question until Cronks future is known. It's got nothing to do with bullying him into a decision. Interesting season for the Storm next year with Cronk, McLean and Harris leaving. It will be interesting to see what they do in the player market and of course makes this year a big season.

I think he'd make a better 10 than a 9 personally. Great organiser and kicker of the ball and terrific defensively. I really think he would be a good fit at Newcastle but it looks like Penrith might now be an option with Martin leaving for the Warriors although I doubt that Martin would be getting the kind of money that Cronk would need.
