Socceroos name 30-man squad for June internationals

By Connor Bennett / Editor

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has named a 30-man squad for the upcoming internationals in June that include a bumper friendly with Brazil and a key World Cup Qualifier against Saudi Arabia.

The line up has a vast array of talent with a mix of local and overseas players to experienced heads and a host of uncapped names.

The list will be sliced down to 23 on May 31 in preparation for the first fixture against Saudi Arabia on June 8 in Adelaide as the Socceroos look to lock down a spot for the Russia World Cup next year.

The same 23-man team will be retained for the international friendly with Brazil in Melbourne on June 13 before heading over to Russia at the end of the month for the highly anticipated FIFA Confederations Cup from June 19 to July 2.

The Confederations Cup is looming as the big dress rehearsal for not just Russia as a hosting nation, but Australia and the other teams looking to get game time against strong opposition in Russian conditions.

“I’m happy with the 30-man squad we have been able to name for the upcoming June international window,” said Postecoglou.

“Initially our energy and focus will be solely on the World Cup Qualifier against Saudi Arabia… It is the most important game we will play over the June period.

“With most of the players’ season coming to an end in the last week or two we will have a lot of players in early, which gives us a good opportunity to make sure we are ready for the Saudi Arabia game.”

There are three uncapped players in the 30-man squad, including three from the A-League, namely Sydney FC champions Rhyan Grant and Danny Vukovic.

There are 24 players coming from overseas and five from the A-League. The odd man out is Robbie Kruse who is currently off contract.

Interestingly, there will be a set of brothers in the Australian squad for the first time in nearly a decade after Dylan and Ryan McGowan were both named in the squad with the former looking to make his Socceroos debut.

Australia are currently third in Group B of the AFC bracket of World Cup Qualifying.

The top two in the group automatically qualify for the big dance in Russia and those two spots are currently occupied by Japan and Saudi Arabia.

The Socceroos are sitting three points behind Saudi Arabia so a win would put them up on level pegging as we hit the business end of qualifying.

In terms of the Confederations Cup after the Brazil friendly, Australia will play games against Germany on June 19, then Cameroon on June 22 before taking on Chile on June 25 for their final group game.

Socceroos June fixtures

Australia vs Saudi Arabia (WCQ) – June 8 – Adelaide
Australia vs Brazil (friendly) – June 13 – Melbourne
Australia vs Germany (CC) – June 19 – Sochi
Australia vs Cameroon (CC) – June 22 – St Petersburg
Australia vs Chile (CC) – June 25 – Moscow

Kruse has started 3 games in 3 years at club level and maybe 10 times as a sub, why is he continuously getting picked? Same for Smith, 1 game in 2 years!!! Remember when Ange used to say he would pick players who were in form and getting consistent game time? Birighitti hasn't played a game all season and yet he is there and Brad Jones is not (won the Eredevisie with Fayenoord and won GK of the month in the Champions League when they played Man U), the only thing that could explain it is that he rejected the call up!

Agree, but he was in the last one as well, just got cut, he better not get cut and Kruse remains, it'll do my head in.

He's been back in action for the past three weeks, two full games and a half.

Brillante can consider himself very unlucky. He is the type of player you could do with in the midfield. He has good attributes, works extremely hard on and off the ball and has a beautiful long range strike he can unleash unexpectedly.

For me, there are a few players that look different or special when they play. the way they move, the passes they try, they just look different in the way they play the game. McGree is one of them. I know he's young kid and hasn't done a hell of a lot just yet, but he has that look about him. Happy to see him exposed to the national team as much as possible as quickly as possible.

Given that our best players are able to avail themselves of the international market and most do so will mean that there will be a foreign player bias if the best players are to be selected. As for McGree and Brillante, they are different types of player. At the end of the day the coach has to make selections on individuals and determine which fit best into his vision. How their team is faring is irrelevant, it is how the individual is performing that matters. We just have to assume the coach and his staff have seen the various players in action, compared them and then made a decision.

I just can not argue with any of the points you made. foreign bias from our own coach

Ange picks McGree and ignores Josh Brillante. McGree has potential, but is hardly the finished product, and spent his season playing for a wooden spoon contender. Brillante is good right now, and helped Sydney to a title, playing a pivotal role, and could easily slot into the team and not look out of place. Ange picks Kruse, who has barely played a game for a while now, and hasn't performed when he's played recently for the socceroos. He ignores Borrello, who's shown he's certainly in more form than Kruse at very least. Ange picks Birigitti, for some reason. Hasn't played in ages, and is third choice at a biggish club. Ignores Lawrence Thomas, who's had a very competent season and is match fit, playing for a smaller club but performing much better. He picks McGowan, simply because he just moved to Portugal, but wouldn't have picked him if he had stayed in the A-league. No one could claim that he deserves to be in the team more than Wilkinson. I know Wilko is much older, but we should be picking the best team available now, these are must win games, so picking for the future is not a luxury we should be indulging. This foreign player bias is really annoying me.

Hope so. It's not a question of ability (they all have if) just a case of actually stepping up ..

I think you (a) misunderstood my post or (b) meant to reply to someone else's comment? What I meant was they are not performimg well enough when they pull a Socceroos shirt on -- nothing to do with which club/League they play in, just an underwhelming level of performance in a Socceroos shirt ..

I've got to say I'm fed up with hearing our players being diminished because they're not contracted to clubs that are household brand names. Even when Jedinak was Captain of Palace in the EPL, that was diminished. Matt Leckie has started every week in the Bundesliga for the past 2yrs, but many fans think he's worthless. Our next WCQ opponents are Saudi Arabia. I don't see any of their players at massive clubs and high level leagues. So, I no longer care where our lads play their club football. If they give 100% when they put on the National Team shirt, I'm confident we will win any game we play against any opponent.

One of the frustrating aspects of Anges squads lately is, when you scan the names there are just soooo many not performing at a high enough level when they pull that shirt on ...

Definitely is tough, however I hope that Ange has the cojones to drop a few players who havent performed in place of players who are either playing regularly or are in good club form. We havent been playing well lately, and to make wholesome changes now would be detrimental, however we do need to make a couple of adjustments. I would like to see Gersbach given a go in a position no one has been able to cement in the last 3 or 4 years. At least Gersbach has been getting game time unlike Smith. Wright deserves to keep his spot ahead of either of the McGowan's. And it isnt as important, but Vukovic has not only played regularly this season, but he has been phenomenal. Deserves a spot ahead of Birighitti. The rest of your list I can agree with Mid.

No doubt a few players are carrying niggling injuries that will impact upon their selection.
