Mooy helps Huddersfield to Premier League promotion

By News / Wire

Huddersfield’s Socceroos star and Manchester City loanee Aaron Mooy made no mistake with his penalty in the Championship playoff shootout win over Reading at Wembley that sealed Premier League promotion.

After a goalless 120 minutes, Huddersfield won the dramatic penalty shootout 4-3 to return to the top flight of English football for the first time in 45 years.

Christopher Schindler struck the winning penalty for Huddersfield after Reading failed to convert their last two spot-kicks.

Reading had taken an early lead in the shootout and looked set for promotion, until Stuart Moore missed his attempt.

Mooy converted from the subsequent attempt, and Huddersfield never looked back.

Huddersfield join Newcastle United and Brighton in returning to the top flight of English football.

Sunderland, Middlesborough and Hull City are the unlucky teams to go down, with all relegated for next season.

Mooy has had a great season at Huddersfield, and was expected to play in the Premier League regardless of whether or not Huddersfield won promotion.

The beauty of the EPL is that there is so much rubbish in the bottom half that weak teams can survive

Perhaps I should have been clearer: He was reported as being 'Man of the Match' on BBC Sport http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/39995791

Yep, we'd already agreed that point. They're not alone.

Brilliant summary. Our boys are hitting form at the right time. But it all comes down to June 8 in Adelaide. Hope they're all feeling fresh and ready to go.

Far from MOTM. He was largely anonymous in the first half

I've seen a few Terriers games this season and they'll have a lot to do to be competitive in the EPL. They came into this game with a goal difference of -2. Anyway, a lot can happen over the summer and a few good signing might do the trick. Having Wagner at the helm will be an imperative.

Got to treat player valuations with a touch of scepticism, but it's being reported 4 EPL teams (not including Huddersfield, or ManCity) are keen to sign Aaron Mooy with a Transfer Fee of A$20 million being reported. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/football/bidding-war-looms-for-aaron-mooy-after-huddersfield-towns-promotion-to-english-premier-league/news-story/128cdb1d0b7dc7af322f61d8b9d8e19b

What a big week for Tom Rogic and now Aaron Mooy, both have written themselves into the history of their respective clubs forever. Mooy's season in particular was unbelievable really and won't be forgotten in West Yorkshire anytime soon. To not only adapt to a higher level (and a good 20 odd extra games), but be as dominant as he has been is really something special. Interesting to see where he ends up next season, wherever it is he's ready for the big time now without a doubt.

I'm not sure this match, with all that is at stake, should be used as much of a guide on how Huddersfield will fare in the EPL. No doubt they face a very stiff challenge staying for more than a year, as would be the case leading into a newly promoted season for every single club ever promoted.

Another good story for a former A-League player. He's guaranteed top flight football for himself next season (although it might not be with Huddersfield but maybe another EPL club or even a Bundesliga club). Rogic scoring the winner in the Scottish FA Cup final. Sometimes we are too hard on ourselves as Aussie football fans. Juric scoring for Luzern in the Swiss Super League, Sainsbury coming off the bench to make his debut for Inter in the Serie A, Mat Ryan back playing in Belgium, Mitch Langerak gaining promotion to the Bundesliga with Stuttgart, Matthew Leckie transferring to another Bundesliga club (Hertha Berlin), Craig Goodwin keeping his club up in the Dutch Eredivisie (Sparta Rotterdam), Brad Jones winning the Eredivisie with Feyernoord, Borrello now with Kaiserslautern, McLaren with Darmstadt. Not doing too bad with the current crop of players we have..... we now need to beat Saudi Arabia and attempt to ensure direct qualification for Russia 2018.

The success Mooy has had this season is testament to the value of having the right people around you to help you make the correct choice. When reading an interview with his agent recently when he talked about how they chose Huddersfield it was quite enlightening to hear an agent who actally cared about their player and not just in it for the money. Mooy benefitted from going to a club who actually wanted him and had a plan on how to use him. Personally I would like to see Mooy stay with Hudderfield and back himself to have a great capmaign in the premier league and then reasses from there. With a possible world cup on the horizon best to stick with what you know to ensure you'll get plenty of playing time.

A great story and a reminder that the HAL can produce quality players. These games are rarely classic skill fests but are engrossing and gut wrenching even for teams that were or are about to become next year's whipping boys in many cases. Terriers, foxes, surely Wolves must be up next.

Great to see an Aussie back in the big time, assuming he moves to Huddersfield, or any Prem club, during the transfer window.

That win this morning is estimated to earn Huddersfield Town at least A$300 million. The playoff is considered "the Richest Game in Football". Aaron Mooy. Nerves of steel. If he'd missed the penalty, the next Reading player would have been shooting to win the match.

Amini has finished his season with a 'Man of the Match' performance as well. Certainly we have some players in form at the moment.
