Lion cub won't play if he opts out: coach

By News / Wire

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan remains optimistic Josh Schache will sign a new deal with the Lions but the young Victorian shouldn’t expect to play AFL footy again this year if he opts out.

Schache, the second overall pick at the 2015 draft, is due to return to the AFL club on Monday after he spent the past two weeks at home in Seymour.

Speculation is rife that the 199cm key forward will tell the Lions, currently last with a 1-9 record, that he wants a trade to a Victorian club at the end of the season.

“I’m not one to say that I want to know tomorrow or the next day … I’ll let nature take its course,” Fagan said of Schache.

“I’m very hopeful that he’ll stay … I think Brisbane have looked after him incredibly well.

“He might be incredibly homesick. That’s something that’s very difficult to stop, if that’s what’s happening. I know we’ve done everything as a club to help him, and I know he knows that.

“We’ll see how it all goes but I’ve still got a strong level of optimism that he’ll stay with us.”

Brisbane list manager David Noble will meet with Schache, who is uncontracted at the end of the season, to discuss his future but there is to time frame for those talks.

Schache was granted leave after he was dropped to the reserves and put in a disinterested four-possession performance in the NEAFL.

The 19-year-old played 17 games in his debut AFL season with just six senior appearances this year.

He shouldn’t expect to add to that tally if he decides his future lies at a Victorian AFL club.

“I guess if a guy decides he’s going to leave your footy club, he’s not going to help you into the future and you’re not in the finals race, you’d probably have to think twice about getting games into him as opposed to another young player who’s going to stay at the club,” Fagan said on Fox News Sports.

“I think that’s our scenario.”

Meanwhile, the Lions have ruled out combative midfielder Mitch Robinson for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old is set for surgery to repair a broken foot suffered in round seven.

I think he would have blues age profile nicely however I don't think we have anything to trade for him. We will keep our number one draft pick and have no second draft pick.

Might be a statement you someday have to make

As far as I'm aware he'd go back into the draft and we get nothing. Hence, we'll do a trade.

So what happens to Schache if he doesn't sign with Brisbane and Brisbane also don't accept a trade with a Melbourne club if they don't think they are getting sufficiently compensated?

Paul, after reading that article you linked above it quotes Schache as saying that he would like to play at the same club as his father. So therefore, perhaps this is just the normal argy-bargy that happens before one signs an extended contract, a ploy for more money.

Don't think that's very relevant given Schache was never in danger of not getting drafted. He could have been up front. I'm sure he thought at the time he wanted to do it, and look, I'm sure he's finding it a stretch living up here but when he inevitably leaves at the end of this year for more money elsewhere I'm inclined to say it's a whole load of hooey aimed at assuaging his guilty conscience. If a club wants to pick up a wilting violet who goes soft when the blowtorch is on him they're welcome to him

Yeah I'm not fussed either. I don't think we will get fleeced at trade time and if someone has to throw in a player as well as a lower pick than we wanted more the better. Hipwood's ongoing improvement makes it easier to stomach him leaving.

Paul D- "Well, at the time he said he was keen on coming here" Did you see what Karnezis had to say over the weekend? He said he should have told the Brisbane recruiters that he didn't see himself living in Brisbane but as an 18 year old trying to get drafted it isn't an easy thing to say.

It's also very hard to improve when your organisation is hamstrung. Overall, I don't think Schache going to be a massive / biggest loss. Obviously you don't want to lose talent that you've heavily invested in, but it's not the breaking of the bank for me. If Berry, Cox & McLuggage were to up and go at the end of their 2 years. Well that would be a different story.

Mattyb - On Henderson trade value, could you remind me what you thought he was worth and what the blues got for him? As for your "perfect example" - where in you initial post did you mention trade values? Weren't you talking about coaching ideologies?

Well, at the time he said he was keen on coming here – I can only wonder how much of the damage was done in 2016 during Leppa’s doomed tenure. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-06-25/possible-no1-draft-pick-schache-keen-to-finish-off-his-dads-work-at-brisbane I think we’ve got no chance of keeping him. Sad but there it is. Cue all the comments about Brisbane being garbage and having bad culture – to which I would simply say that it is all relative to the other 17 clubs. People seem to forget it’s a race and other clubs are allowed to keep advancing and improving, and right now pretty much all of them are better at it than us.

I'm not all doom and gloom in this situation. I'm actually a little bit disappointed it got to this. With our history with "Home Sickness" Why the Lions would risk the farm for Schache has never made any sense to me? Especially when we've got another young gun key forward coming out of our Academy this coming Draft. Yes he's 2 years behind Schache, but he's a QLD kid who won't be looking for this 1st chance to get out of the joint and it's not like we are in any closer to being competitive.

Paul, Cat you are right he will get the Lions a first round pick and I don't disagree with what Fagan is saying, but I am also thinking it could also be beneficial in playing him in the seniors too. If his poor form is because he is unhappy and wants to go home perhaps by agreeing to get a trade done you turn an unhappy kid into a happy kid who now wants to show how good he is. It might be beneficial to have him playing senior footy and possibly kicking 3 or 4 goals a week than running around disinterested in the NEAFL. Suddenly you might not just have a couple of Victorian teams interested but all of them looking at him which increases your bargaining power. Maybe instead of one first round pick you can ask for 2. I know my comment is full of maybe' s but the Lions need to do the best thing for themselves and explore all scenarios. Hopefully his trip home has rejuvenated him and maybe he decides he does want to stay at the Lions and he goes on to be the star his junior footy showed he could be.

Gecko,I'm assuming Casboult is a free agent as the story did go that Carlton were expecting a second or third round compensation pick back for him rather than any talk of a trade with the Pies.

Casboult for Schache would be a good swap. We don't want either one at Collingwood. We've already got enough forwards who can't chase.

We have shown we can pull off plenty of threeway trades in the past. I'm not concerned.

PaulD - I think the deal could get quite complicated, I think you are right he will get you a first rounder but probably back half of the first round and I think the teams that want him won't necessarily have the picks in that area.

It's not having a dig at the tragic blues at all,it's a perfect example. Henderson being not picked when he decided to go had zero effect on hid trade value just as Casboult or Schache playing out the season or not is going to have no effect on their value come the end of the season. It's a professional league, recruiters don't need one or two more games to have a look at players who are currently in the system

Lions have got this bang on I feel, and Cat's right too - we will get a first rounder for him, very much a potential price on schache. Everyone saw him prior to the draft tearing it up and they will say he's a gun, it's just the Lions they stuff every good young kid up, we will have him and sort him out. So we don't have to worry about playing him. as to putting pressure on him I think we have zero chance of keeping him personally so let's just get this sorted asap. Otherwise this will just drag on and on and hang over the rest of this season. Can't have the club continue to be held hostage by young players who want their cake and eat it by still playing games for us to help their development when they've already decided in their mind they want out. Probably a bit harsh but it's mid-winter deja vu again of yet another lions kid out the door for the umpteenth year in a row and I'm over it

aw, if he doesn’t play surely his trade value decreases.
Not in this case. Any contract he may be offered is going to be based on 99% potential.
