Have patience, Wallabies supporters, things will click

By Mike Elliston / Roar Rookie

After the loss to Scotland and the tragedy of a year that’s befallen Aussie Super Rugby sides, it’s easy to dwell on the negatives. We all do it. It’s our default position when we get touched up by more than we think we should or by someone we think we shouldn’t.

Yet across the ditch, the silence is deafening, and that is telling.

Normally after a loss like Saturday’s, out comes the trans-Tasman banter, but the neighbours are feeling for their Aussie cousins and don’t want to kick the dog when it’s down, so to speak.

Attitude-wise, a loss can be a positive. If you don’t lose, you gain get that hunger. This is when a bad loss turns into a good loss.

As an amateur rugby player of no note, I know all too well how a bad loss can affect you. Many a time have we lost to team, only to turn up the next round and pull their pants down and give them a spanking. That’s not skill, that’s attitude.

[latest_videos_strip category=”rugby” name=”Rugby”]

I don’t think for a minute the Wallabies have a bad attitude. In fact, quite the opposite – these guys are doing all they can to get better. Pop down to any open training session and the amount of fine skill work they do is amazing.

Last year, the Wallabies were guilty of being one dimensional in their approach, but what they are working on now is really quite exciting. Their biggest signing has to be Mick Byrnes, the ex-AFL player who has been the All Blacks’ not-so-secret-weapon for the last decade.

The thing is, these guys are human, they are doing their best, and they are actually improving. What you’re seeing is growth, believe it or not!

The more they do, the more natural this new style will become. Go to a training session if you get a chance, the extra work they are doing just going to improve their skill set unbelievable.

Your greatest assets as supporters has to be patience.

Martin, i highly recomment you just stop watching until the coach / selectors change. I have and I feel liberated. I tuned in to this website today for the first time in half a year or more and all i see are the same guys pushing the same arguments they did 6mths ago... The coach hasn't changed. the 7 hasn't changed. the 10 hasn't changed and the coach still wants the golden child beale (aka the problem child) to come back and fix everything. What's that common saying about repeating the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? Dear ARU, my emotional membership is on pause and I am happy with my decision.

Spot on - despite what the knockers might say, I don't believe that there has ever been a player picked for the Wallabies who consciously went out to do less than their best. It's a team game and, to win, you have to have all 15 players meshing and clicking. Some days it doesn't happen. You can play a game that the spectators can tell is rubbish, but you don't know how to get out of the rut, sometimes. It's just the way it is. I bet most of the professional knockers on here have never played above D grade.

Do I ever say that "real smart rugby people have stated" this? No, I said more than me. You're attacking imaginary demons, mate and projecting what you think I meant to say, but you'er wrong. I have no opinion on JON beyond what I've heard of other people, and from what I've heard from other people (TWAS, Bakkies, the GAGR podcast for example) he spent a lot of money on silly ventures without any real point. "What things? What point are you making here, except to denigrate him." What are you on about? I asked a question and rather than justify his decisions you're upset that someone is querying whether there was any discernible logic behind his decisions. "I don’t care for JON, but you just can’t get away with this sort of character attack." You're imagining things again, mate, I'm not 'attacking' his character, I am saying that, without knowing the full story about him, what I've heard from other people has, really, been nothing but negative, and asked for the other side of the story. Now, if you're going to say that I was wrong and he did some good things then answer the question I asked. 'Was there any justification for most of the things he did?' For example: - getting rid of the ARC - bringing in the Rebels when it appears we didn't have the player base or finances to support it -buying league guys rather than investing in the grassroots - giving money to Shute Shield clubs rather than investing in grassroots If I'm wrong on any of these then tell me, don't whinge I am attacking his character when I specifically ask for the logic behind his decisions.

Fionn, let's break down your comment. "Lots of people who know far more than me seem to really hate JON." You have tried to use humility to take away the arrogance of this comment, but saying that real smart rugby people have stated something. There is no base to this claim, no facts at all. If you state this, you must have same name and statement from these so called people. Secondly, what is the point of these comment but to show some real hatred of JON from you. Why and who care? "Was there any justification for most of the things he did?" What things? What point are you making here, except to denigrate him. "Even his first term seems questionable." Now come on, back it up with some incidents and hard facts. "Or perhaps I’m simply recounting what other people have said to me." All hearsay. What people, and what did they say? I don't care for JON, but you just can't get away with this sort of character attack. Just a bit lazy Fionn.

It is all professional now though stumur and league are getting them when their young. In Sydney there are 400 16 year olds with agents and rookie contracts worth around $15K in the NRL system. The thought of a new phone, car or payment of school fees will turn a young guys back on rugby. Numerically there are only two Sydney teams per age group in Sydney rugby. In the private schools AFL and soccer have taken rugby to less than 50% in many of the traditionally rugby oriented schools. With less money rugby has to pick winners and hope they come good. Whereas I recall watching the Roosters U16s. U18s and U20s train and the director of juniors told me of the 100 plus players, they would be lucky to get three who made it to the senior Rooster team. In fact only Boyd Cordner and Cheyse Blair made the top grade.

Fiona, Yeah pretty sure you're right. A lot of emotion, adrenalin & money was poured into lifting Australian sport towards 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Even non-Olympic sports got caught up in the buzz. It was like we wanted to show the world we were sporting masters across many sports. And indeed, many sports lifted. But it seems, almost as quickly the end started to come by 2007/08, especially in rugby & cricket. Even the Kangaroos lost the 2008 RLWC. The Socceroos peaked in 2006, were competitive in 2010, but have fallen since. The golden period for many sports was probably more or less 1990-2010.

A great statement that can be taken on board by alot of 'talk it up Aus Fans'....NZers do like Aussies....except when your Government legislates against NZers who live in AUS....in NZ - Aussies get all the bells and whistles...true ANZAC spirit...but back to the focus of the article...much of what ails the WBs is the COACH....

If foley is thinking that,so is the rest of the team. By playing the June test. This is where the team must gel and to know each other on and off the field .you loose some ,you win some but this is where it starts.

Just require a winning attitude. I'd like to be a fly on the wall and listen to what the coaches say before they run out on the field. It can't be good and it must be putting pressure on the guys. That pressure turns to mistakes ,uncertainty and bad decision making. Just let them go out and do the job.

Yeah well, it could end up like Aussie tennis, a couple of half-revivals, very short-lived, before descending back into the morass.

But Harry T, we were world beaters in the amateur era just 20 years ago, competing with professional sports then..

The better athletes were playing NRL origin a few minutes ago. That is a factor. Add that to the 20 or so union pros gone overseas to play and you have little quality left to choose from.

Just compare the AUS Super teams and Wallabies with NZ and SA: The AUS Superugby teams are not the fittest...the NZ teams are and SA teams second. The AUS teams miss the most tackles The AUS teams struggle the most in set-pieces. The AUS teams have the worst kickers. The AUS teams have the worst support runners in play. The AUS teams have the worst cleaners at the ruck. The AUS teams have the slowest players. 6 out of the above 7 things are all in their control...they are weak across the board. I don't care about detail in attack and micro-skills when they are not fit enough, miss tackles, cannot scrum and do line-outs, don't run into support, cannot kick after 6 years of professional rugby, cannot clean defenders at ruck time. I want to seek this improve and quickly, otherwise I'm not interested anymore. Where is the pride????????

@ Morsie I don't know if you're referring to my comments, but if so: Rugby offside rulings in open play are complicated and so I guess the ref has considerable flexibility. However, the basic principal of staying your side of the ball by at leasyt a metre is the guidepost. From my chair in front of the TV, Scotland appeared to encroach regularly, but maybe I was one-eye blind. It seems like sour grapes, but no. I am comfortable with the outcome.

Can you give the patience you think is required a measurement, as in a "a little" or "heaps" or "heaps and heaps", or a "$hit load". Some reference please so i know when to give up.

Harry, to be honest the coaches would also see the same things but for some reason the players are not taking the advice onboard. It takes hours of practice to adjust muscle memory and for some reason the Wallabies are struggling under match conditions to retain the practiced skills. Maybe the nucleus of this team just can't handle pressure.

I disagree Harry. I do feel we have the players but we aren't utilising them. As well, the coaching has to come into it. Too often we see the same mistakes game after game. Missed tackles, poor kicking, chargedowns, handling, tactics. Players selected out of position, Hanigan is an example of this, we need a proper 6. Moore should also leave. Players need to be picked in their usual positions, though Hunt is normally fullback for the Reds he did play 10 & 12 for Biarritz. I don't know if Foley is the way forward, Maybe the Brumbies 9 & 10 to start. The question for the RC is where will Beale play? Hunt is going great guns at 12 so he needs to stay there, I would play him at 15 and Izzy on the wing as he hasplayed much of his football there..
