The Brisbane Lions will dare to dream of a third upset in five weeks – and it would be the biggest yet! – when they host the Geelong Cats. Join The Roar for live scores from the match at the Gabba on Saturday night, starting from 7:25pm AEST.
Brisbane have spent a decent amount of time in the wilderness over the last few years. Moses would be proud. It’s remarkable that they haven’t won a wooden spoon in that time actually – they’ve arguably been pretty lucky not too.
Ironically, while they may well win the spoon this year, it will probably be their best season in many years, because it looks like it’s going to be remembered as the one where they turned the corner.
That didn’t seem likely to be the case a few short weeks ago, when they had a 1-9 record and were getting smashed on a weekly basis.
But then they smashed Fremantle at home, and last week they came back to hunt down Essendon on the road – it’s been impressive to say the least.
What about Geelong? As they have been almost every year for a decade now, they’re at the pointy end of the ladder – currently sitting in third thanks to nine wins and a draw.
It’s an incredibly tight ladder. They could easily finish at the top of the table come season’s end, however, by no means are they guaranteed a top-four spot if they slump.
Both teams have big pieces of good news this week – captains are back! Dayne Beams for Brisbane, and Joel Selwood for Geelong.
Prediction
Geelong have let one slip every now and then. It happens. It could happen today! But, it probably won’t.
Geelong Cats by 42 points.

In general play Brisbane wasn't bad but Geelong players seemed to step out of tackles too easily. I wanna say Geelong was too good but being realistic I think Brisbane was that 5% off that makes a difference. For the first time I can remember in the last two years Geelong looked to play down the middle all game. They took the game on instead of just long to contests along the boundary. Whether that was the intent or Brisbane just let them do it I am not sure. I don't think Brisbane embarrassed themselves but they needed to work just a bit harder. Tactically Brisbane should never have let Harry Taylor play on his own all game. He was back to his defensive best just intercepting and cutting off attack time and again. Think I heard Geelong scored 8.1 from defensive intercept marks. That's a lot of full field running.

If Ryan Buckland is the stats man, you're the tactics man. In all seriousness, you're right. I didn't watch tonight's game (I was more intrigued in the first half St Kilda produced in Melbourne) but I think this was the big win that Geelong probably needed. They're definitely looking the goods this year! Hawthorn next weekend will be fun to watch ...

The Cats are looking very balanced. Probably a bit biased here, but of the top 4 contenders, I think the Cats play the best two-way football. First time I've seen Brisbane play this year. I did like their fast lateral ball movement. They just need better link-up play. Their forwards also need to provide more pressure to rush the opposition coming off their half-back line. It may not result in a tackle, but it does force a higher kick, which allows their midfield defence more time to either spoil or intercept on the second and third phase of possession.

Geelong better not capitulate like their disgusting final last year

I've been impressed with your mob in recent weeks. The courage to defeat Freo, the extremely admirable (but probably frustrating all the same) draw against GWS and then this comfortable win over Brisbane. Decent three weeks, I'd say.

Solid win from Geelong. Cat, I know asking a Cats fan this is hard, but were Brisbane as bad as the scoreline suggests? Or where they competitive but unable to keep up with Geelong's firepower? Thanks for the impromptu call as well; definitely contact the editors so you could do some more live-blogging, you'd be great at it!

Zorko with a monster game in defeat. Will he take the three votes or will Dangerfield? Certainly they with share the 2 and 3 votes between them. Both phenomenal games. I'd give the one vote to Duncan, he was everywhere too. Congrats to tommy lonergan on 200 games.
