Jarryd Hayne's Gold Coast future to be sorted at crisis talks

By News / Wire

Jarryd Hayne’s future at the Gold Coast will be decided on Monday when he enters crisis talks with coach Neil Henry over their public falling out.

The Hayne Plane could take off from Queensland’s glitter strip following his strongly-worded criticism of Henry in the wake of the Titans’ 42-16 defeat to St George Illawarra on Saturday.

Hayne told News Corp that he would depart the club if Henry wanted him gone and claimed his coach did not speak to him in the week leading up to their loss to the Dragons.

Henry reportedly delivered a ‘him or me’ ultimatum to the club’s directors in the lead up to the clash, claiming that they couldn’t work together.

Titans chairwoman Rebecca Frizelle and CEO Graham Annesley will mediate the peace talks between the pair in an effort to repair relations.

Both Hayne and Henry have a year to run on their contracts however it now appears untenable that both will remain at the club beyond 2017.

Hayne has been criticised for his performance in 2017 while pulling in a marquee salary, reportedly worth $1.2 million.

Hayne said he would speak to his manager about possibly seeking an early release and to gauge his options.

The NSW State of Origin representative has few options with most clubs under pressure to get under the salary cap.

Brisbane and Queensland great Darren Lockyer on Sunday said he couldn’t see how both could work together and that their relationship seemed unworkable.

This is just a prime example of a player becoming bigger then the team. From his exclaiming "this is my house" after kicking a winning field goal during his return, I knew it was a bad idea for the Gold Coast. It's a pity that cutting Hayne would cost the club three times more then sacking Henry. But the fact of the matter is a player has been held in higher priority then a coach. I understand Henry has people wanting him out of the club but it's still an absolute joke.

Even his coach at NFL didn't last 2 years.

Finally other players in the side are leaking their discontent with the coaching as well...but it's hard for the mob to turn back once they get word of a lynching..

Story is that the Coach has lost the dressing room?- Obviously one of them has to go so I am thinking it may be the Coach if the story is correct- Hayne will have to be paid out if he is the one to go- Don't know if any NRL teams will sign him or have any money to sign unless the Titans pay the bulk of next years contract. In saying that there would be a few clubs doing their sums in how much they could offer him if he was to become available one would say

100% correct The mob carry on as if Hayne writes those articles about himself or he is commentating himself

Hayne said that if the coach didn't want him, and that that was the coach's right, he would be prepared to leave. How is that grounds for the vitriol against the man? The same critics who go on about not believing the hype are now judging him by the standards of that hype. The same thing happened with Benji when he left the Tigers. You can always count on the mob morality in rugby league.

At first grade level- absolutely true. Here's the breakdown from Hayne's debut in 2006 (NB Brian Smith also coached the Eels in 2006 but got the spear before Hayne started): Jason Taylor (2006) Michael Hagan (2007–2008) Daniel Anderson (2009–2010) Stephen Kearney (2011-2012) Brad Arthur (2012), (2014) Ricky Stuart (2013) Neil Henry (2016-2017) So matth... are you saying all those years of coaching chaos at the Eels was because of Hayne? Was he standing on a grassy knoll or something???

Boy did i jump on the Hayne plane when he went to the 49's. Even when he went to the 7's i was on his wing tip. Even now, all he has to do is be a leader and play to his ability. I really hope he does but if not he should just disappear to union for 12 months until his contract expires so theres no more harm to the titans.

Is it true that Hayne has never had the same coach for more than two years in a row?

Hahahaha. Tomic openly states his lack of passion - Hayne prefers to allow his actions (or lack thereof) to do the talking.

Hayne, over hyped and over paid. I was never convinced he would be a good fit at the Titans.

Hayne's reputation has gone down so that what other NRL club would really want to sign him? I blame the media for hyping him up so much, and he was the victim of believing it.

Henry should stay, Hayne should go. Simple. The Titans were building a great side in late 2016 with very few big name players - then Hayne arrived and upset the apple-cart. Since he has arrived the "team" that was build has been fractured - not completely Hayne's fault (although his attitude and effort on the field and at training is no secret). He is not the correct fit for this team.

This just hasn't worked so best both parties move on. Despite there poor season, I think Henry is a pretty good coach and they're hard to find these days. It's crazy the Club signed Hayne if the head coach didn't want him. I don't know where Hayne Plane gets a start in the NRL next season.

And of course Hayne is telling the truth? Why don't you wait and get both sides of the story before deciding Henry has to go. Hayne has added ZERO to the Titians this year and it is clear from his body language he does not want to be there. The past 3 years has shown what sort of person Hayne is; it's all about ME. Let's play NFL; oh no, don't want to do that. Let's play 7's for Fiji - at least they knew what sort of EGO they had to deal with and said no. He then scored a ridiculous contract to the Titans and all he's done is white ant the coach and underperform. The author suggests he might try and opt out but I reckon he won't get offers, because of the salary cap, but because of the ego. Who wants to take on a player who is about to go into a meeting where the likely outcome is "the coach or me"?

Sack the coach, he has lost the plot by not managing his players. if he doesn't talk to Haynes then he is not a good coach, in fact a very, very bad coach. all coaches must communicate and take control of players regardless of who they are, Neil Henry has failed to do just that. sack the coach and read Haynes his last rites.. get fitter and perform to the highest standards on and off the field. AMEN.
