I am sure the blues have promised to give him the opportunity for more midfield time, if he takes that opportunity I will be very happy, at the moment on the evidence to date I am unsure whether he will.

One of the reasons he left the Cats is he wants midfield minutes. I'm sure one of the reasons he chose Carlton is they would have promised to use him there.

The crowd comparison is fair enough but u always felt that trade was as much about getting mcpharlin and that was the way it was made possible.

For a team that finished 2nd to come away with a topflight mid and a massive draft presence is huge Sammy. Regardless of the losses the gains outrank imho

Will be interesting to come back to this trade in 5 years time. Whoever is picked up at #2 by Freo will be forever compared to Weller. If Weller goes on to become a flop it could end up a bit like the Trent Croad scenario for Fremantle in 2001, when they traded away the pick that got Hawthorn Luke Hodge. Croad was also meant to go over and be the face of Fremantle, didn't work out for him. Of course Weller could go onto be a star and pick 2 could be a flop as well. Here's hoping Freo nail their first two picks, we haven't always done that.

See I think a lot of people have overrated Weller. In his own draft year, Fremantle's second pick Blakely is already a far better player than Weller is and the bloke that will replace Weller off Halfback (Wilson) was stolen for a second rounder. What Weller does have going for him is the fact that he's marketable and still young but there is huge pressure on him. If Tom Lynch leaves after next season, Weller becomes the highest paid player at GCS, only a year after not finishing in the top 10 in a side that came 14th. Don't get me wrong I'm stoked with the deal but Freo absolutely played GWS who were desperate to get a 'big name' player to sign but in reality I don't think Weller is that player. I wouldn't be very happy if I was a Sun's fan.

Ablett was bald, pasty and with no connection to GC, Weller is young, good looking with a connection( albeit slightly lose) to area aswell as being a v good player. He will be the face of GC and the benefits may not seem obvious at first but wait five plus years and it'll make sense

Col - I think the big thing from this trade period is that we started this years draft with 3, 40 & 58 and finished with 3, 10 and 30 that is a pretty decent effort before you get to bringing in a quality player in Kennedy and a solid citizen with potential in Lang.

Sammy, I think both clubs are happy with the trade and that is the result you want to happen.

Cat - I don't really see Lang being a full time first string mid-fielder, hence I have him competing with our small forwards who could run through the middle and secondly all the player I named are young and have not established themselves as midfielders yet - if they all work out things change Finally we lost GIbbs and brought in Kennedy and I expect we will take midfielders at 3 and 10 work - that is 2 extra players battling for spots plus Lang plus the young blokes I already mentioned all competing for spots. The point is Lang is a solid player but I haven't seen anything from him yet that puts him above the other players competing to add depth to our midfield - if eh grabs his chance then great but I am not counting on him to do so.

Macca, from your ins and outs and based on the ladder being the same next year, we lost Bryce Gibbs gained Kennedy and Lang and increased our points value by 1157 points which is equivalent to pick 15 (1112 points). The Lang trade cost us 333 points or equivalent to pick 46. So if you add the Lang points back onto the 1157 the Gibbs trade got us Kennedy and 1490 points which is equivalent to pick 9, As I said that is based on the same ladder next year so the values increase or decrease depending on where teams finish next year. Having 2 picks in the top 10 this year as well as pick 30 and a first round pick and 2 second round picks next year is only helping our rebuild. SOS did really well.

I was thinking that the Gibbs trade was a heavy price to pay but on reflection Carlton gets 2 x 2017 1st round picks but the 2018 scenario works well for the crows as the 2nd round pick swap could be 33-35 for 20-23 and getting Carltons 3rd rounder could be almost like an end of 2nd round pick and that leaves the crows with 2 x 1st round picks and hopefully a very low 2nd rounder (if Carlton finish down near the bottom - which is obviously what the crows would have hoped in making the deal). SO with the pick 12 for Cameron the crows remain in the 1st and second rounds of this draft and can go to next years supposed super draft with some very good picks and maybe the ability to trade up from there. So the deal does not look as bad (heavy price to pay for Gibbs) in the end for the crows as what it appears at first glance

Thought you had a very thin midfield and now you have too many for him to play?

I wouldn't be surprised if Weller gains a popularity (or notoriety?) of sorts due to a) his looks and b) the fact that he's the face of a sunglasses brand. Both of those things will probably advantage him on the Gold Coast haha!

Promotional aspect? How many people on the gold coast recognised Ablett when he walked down the street? No one will know Weller.

To me Cat if the likes of Fisher, Cuningham, SPS & Pickett all work out I can't really see a role for him, but it is handy to have a solid citizen to provide cover if they don't or get injured. If he can grab his chance and hold his spot good on him and it will make the others work all the more.
